Rapid tests such as electrical conductivity provide fast and consistent results regarding stratification of seed lots by vigor. They are important tools used to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds of several species, however, no such information was found for Sorghum bicolor. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the physiological quality of the seeds by the mass and individual conductivity tests. Four plots of the Fepagro 19 cultivar were analyzed through the degree of moisture, weight of one thousand seeds, first count and germination, radicular and shoot length, dry mass, cold test and emergence of field seedlings. Subsequently, they were submitted to mass electrical conductivity experiments with variations in the imbibition time (2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours), temperature (20, 25 and 30 ºC), number of seeds (25 and 50), volume of water (50 and 75 mL) and individual (2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours). The design was completely randomized and the data evaluated by the Tukey test. Only the lowest physiological quality batch was detected in the 20 °C, 75 mL and 25 seeds for 12 hours combinations; the individual test detected the least physiological quality batch, and it was possible to perform it in 24 hours.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the sowing periods in production, productivity component and physiological quality of seeds of three soybean cultivars (TMG133RR, P98Y70RR and NS7670RR) in Orthic Quartzarenic Neosoil in the cerrado region. The design used was a randomized block a factorial scheme design with four repetitions, and each plot with useful space consisted of three rows of four meters length, spaced at 0.45 meters. Field evaluations were the final stand, the height of the plants, height of the first pod insertion, the mass of 100 seeds and productivity. Already in the lab seeds were evaluated for germination and vigor (first germination count, emergency, emergence speed index, length and dry mass of the aerial part of the plant and roots, electrical conductivity, accelerated aging and tetrazolium test). It concludes that it is possible to use Orthic Quartzarenic Neosoils, located in the Cerrado region at altitudes higher than 600 m, in years and places with good water distribution in the spring-summer seasons, for grain and soybeans production, but as a first goal, the crop should be sown in the first 20 days of November otherwise it should take place in early December.

Seeds with a good physiological quality are essential to high productivity. However, for some seeds, Phaseolus lunatus L., the viability and vigor analyze show deficiency in quality. This work aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of Phaseolus lunatus L. seeds using several vigor tests. The study was realized at the Laboratory of Seed Analysis of the Agricultural Sciences Center of the Federal University of Paraíba, in Areia – PB, Brazil. We used seeds from five cultivars of P. lunatus (Branca, Orelha de Vó, Cearense, Rosinha, and Roxinha). To determine the physiological quality, we measured the water content, the viability and vigor test (germination, emergence, electrical conductivity, tetrazolium, first germination count and emergence, seedling length and dry mass). We used a completely randomized design for seeds evaluation, and the field test was performed in randomized blocks. The water content of P. lunatus did not differ among the cultivars, indicating a uniformity in the percentage of moisture. Also, the percentage and speed of emergency and the dry mass of seedlings did not differ among the varieties. The tetrazolium and electrical conductivity tests indicated that Rosinha cultivar had the worst viability concerning the other cultivars, showing a low percentage of living tissue and lower electrical conductivity. The seeds of Roxinha cultivar had the better physiological quality, and the Cearense cultivar had the worst quality evaluation. We recommend the tetrazolium test but not the electrical conductivity test to evaluate the vigor of P. lunatus.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of ‘Chilli pepper’ seeds, extracted from fruits harvested at different stages of maturation, with and without post-harvest rest. Twelve treatments resulted from the 6 x 2 factorial, with six maturation stages (100% green fruits, 90% green and 10% orange fruits, 10% green and 90% orange fruits, 100% orange fruits, 100% red fruits and 100 % matte red fruits, corresponding to 44, 53, 60, 63, 70 and 73 days after anthesis (DAA), respectively), and fruits with and without rest for seven days. Seeds were evaluated two months after extraction as well as after 14 months of storage in a dry chamber (40% relative humidity and 20°C). The characteristics evaluated were: weight of a thousand seeds, germination, first count, electrical conductivity, emergency test and shoot length of seedlings. Fruits of orange chilli pepper 'Malagueta' kept at rest for seven days and bright red fruits and matte without rest produce seeds with physiological quality, which are maintained after a period of 14 months stored in a chamber with 40% relative humidity at 20°C.

Endozoochory (dispersion with passage through the digestive system of animals) is one of the most important processes. It is included in the ecological process known as dispersive mutualism, benefit the species involved. The most used method to evaluate the physiological quality of seeds is carried out based on the traditional germination test. However, electrical conductivity tests with seeds of forest species are still scarce, especially those developed with the individual method, which provide greater fidelity to the results so that through this one can define the test by the mass methods. The current work aimed to investigate the vigor, from the electrical conductivity of the seeds of Tournefortia paniculata Cham. after passage through the digestive tract of a ruby-crowned tanager Tachyphonus coronatus (Vieillot, 1822). An expedition was conducted in a fragmented area of Atlantic Forest in process of reforestation in the campus of the IFRJ. After the capture of the passerine with mist nets, proceeded the identification of seeds shed in its feces. The experimental design was completely randomized with one treatments with five replicates. The results allowed concluded that the seed of the T. paniculata Cham. after digestive tract of the ruby-crowned tanager presented high electrical conductivity in three of its replicates at the individual level.

ABSTRACT Salinity influences all germination stages and may adversely affect seedling establishment in the field. The objective of this research was to determine the relationship between the antioxidant activity and the physiological performance of seeds and to verify the efficacy of the imaging analysis of popcorn seedlings after seed exposure to saline stress. A completely randomized design was used that consisted of four replicates in a factorial scheme. This scheme comprised three popcorn hybrids (P618, AP6002, and AP8203) and five saline potential levels (0.0; -0.1; -0.3; -0.6, and -0.9 MPa) that were obtained from KCl solutions of different concentrations. First count germination, germination and seedling vigor classification (strong normal seedlings), and dry mass of seedlings were evaluated to determine the physiological quality of the seed. The images of seedlings were used to evaluate the coleoptile and root lengths, indices of vigor, uniformity, and growth using the Groundeye® software. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) were also determined. Saline stress compromises the physiological quality and antioxidant activity of seeds and the performance of popcorn seedlings. Computerized image analysis using Groundeye® was efficient in evaluating the popcorn seedlings after being subjected to salt stress. Hybrids AP6002 and AP8203 were more tolerant to salt stress than hybrid P618.

The electrical conductivity test is a quick, practical and objective test force; however, its effectiveness varies according to the species, quantity of seed, water volumes, soaking temperature, among other factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of P.moniliformis seeds lots by means of the electrical conductivity test, testing different methodologies. For this, two lots were tested in three quantities of time (25, 50 and 75 seeds) and nine soaking times (2, 4, 6 , 12, 24 , 36, 48, 60 and 72 hours) in three volumes of water (50, 75 and 100 mL) at 25 °C. To evaluate the initial quality of the lots, germination percentage, germination speed index, average time of germination, length and dry mass of seedlings were determined. The use of the electrical conductivity test of P. moniliformis seeds is recommended using 75 seeds in 75 mL of water for 2 hours at 25 °C or seeds in 50 mL distilled water with 50 seeds per 6 hours at 25 °C.

The use and incorporation of basalt powder in the soil have grown every year, and there are still no studies showing its effects on the physiological quality of soybean seeds. Thus, considering the importance of this response in the production system, the objective of the present work was to evaluate the physiological condition of soybean seeds after applying different doses of basalt powder in the soil. The experimental design used was completely randomized in a 3 × 4 factorial scheme, with three replications. The treatments consisted of three soybean cultivars, and four doses of basalt powder (0, 1, 3, and 5 t ha-1) produced in the 2018/2019 harvest in the region of Chapadão do Sul, MS. The tests carried out were: first germination count, germination, electrical conductivity, dry mass of the upper plant and roots, and tetrazolium test (vigor, viability, mechanical damage, moisture, and bed bug damage). The results were submitted to the normality test and analysis of variance, followed by comparisons of means by the Tukey test at the level of 5% probability. The results showed for the first time the combined effects of both factors tested only on the variables: electrical conductivity, root length, vigor, viability, and mechanical damage. The response obtained was dependent on the cultivars evaluated, which differed for all measured characteristics.

Corn is important in agriculture for its dual is uses as food and animal feed. The use of quality seeds is fundamental for outcomes in the field. The treatment of seeds with molybdenum may increase the productive capacity and uniformity of the corn. For this to work, the amount applied to the seeds must be adequate to promote development and increase the final crop production. Thus, the objective of this work was to verify the effects of molybdenum and potassium application on the germination and vigor of corn seeds. The physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated by germination, first count, seedling length (shoot and root), seedling dry matter mass, emergence, and the cold test. Six treatments (T1–T6) were performed, with T1 free of molybdenum and potassium and the others with varying dosages. The seeds were treated with a commercial product that containing molybdenum and potassium. The design was completely randomized, with four replications and six treatments. Smaller doses of molybdenum resulted in a higher percentage of normal seedlings. Based on the length and dry mass of the seedlings, it was verified that maize seeds were negatively impacted by increasing doses of molybdenum and potassium. In the emergence tests in sand, treatments T5 and T6 presented a greater number of seedlings. The physiological quality of corn seeds was not significantly influenced by the application of molybdenum and potassium in the first count and germination results in the cold and germination tests.

ABSTRACT: The vigor tests are intended to monitor the quality of seeds as it allows reliably distinguish lots of low and high vigor, providing additional information to the germination test. So in this study the objective was to identify the most efficient vigor tests on stratification of lots of corn seeds cv. 'Sertanejo'. The experiment was conducted at Laboratory of Seed Analysis at the Center of agricultural Science of the Universidade Federal da Paraíba, using samples from 20 seed lots in a completely randomized design. For characterization of the lots it was evaluated water content, germination and vigor (cold test, electrical conductivity, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in field and germination at low temperatures). The accelerated aging, electrical conductivity and field emergence of seedlings tests are the most efficient for classification of lots of corn seeds cv. 'Sertanejo' in levels of vigor, been the seeds of lot 1 the most vigorous.
