The ASEAN population will increase to 724.8 million by the year 2030 and the urbanization rate increases with years. This leads to the development of the construction industry to fulfil the fundamental social and physical requirements. Construction activities create an adverse negative impact on the environment, such as pollution and damage to the environment. This article will study more about the construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) and it can be founded in various construction stages. Therefore, the government and authorities introduce environmental management practices to mitigate the negative impact on construction on the environment and minimize the pollution at the source. What, why and where are terms required to consider before the implementation of environmental management practice. The government policies of Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand are summarized. Approximately 10% of total synthetic carbon dioxide (CO2) sourced from concrete production. The content more emphasizes the green materials generated from agricultural waste to replace the silica in concrete. The bamboo is used as interior decoration and material for building construction. Green materials technology is solar panel, solar thermal collector, geothermal technology, hydropower technology and cooling roof system.

In recent decades the problem of construction and demolition waste has been receiving more attention due to possible ecological and economic damage caused by them. This is because they are produced in large quantities and often receive inadequate disposal, being deposited illegally in vacant lots, public places and even in areas of environmental preservation. The practice of recycling of construction and demolition waste (CDW) by construction is an alternative that minimizes the amount of waste generated and the impacts caused by them. Moreover, the introduction of alternative materials might reduce the production costs of construction. In Brazil, there is great availability of lateritic concretions. This material, according to some studies, proved to be a viable alternative to be used as coarse aggregate in concrete production. In this study, it is used the CDW as a filler to replace 10% of Portland cement and, as coarse aggregate, lateritic concretions. Tests of physical properties of coarse and fine aggregates and determination of the mechanical strength of hardened concrete were made. The construction and demolition waste used as filler to replace the mass of cement in the mixture proved to be a viable alternative.

Every year, there is a considerable increase in the exploitation of deposits to supply the market for aggregates. On the other hand, so does the production of solid waste from construction and demolition waste (CDW). In 2010 Brazil approved the PNRS (National Policy on Solid Waste), which sets out how the country should have their waste, encouraging recycling and sustainability. As an alternative to the above problem, this paper aims to investigate the feasibility of partial and total replacement of the asphalt concrete aggregates by recycled aggregates from CDW in order to reduce the environmental impacts caused by the operation of quarries and give an adequate final destination the residue produced by man in construction. Were carried out five (05) projects mixture of: the first (parameter of our research) used only natural aggregates (0% CDW) in the second, third and fourth replaced 25%, 50% and 75% respectively of natural aggregate by the recycled aggregate and the fifth and last, used only recycled aggregates (100% CDW). They carried out the characterization of the aggregates by means of physico-chemical and mechanical, analyzing them with reference based on specific standards paving. For mixtures, they calculated the volumetric parameters and performed mechanical tests of tensile strength and stability. The results indicate that the recycled aggregate, in a defined proportion, can replace the natural aggregate in the flexible pavements

PurposeThe capacity of landfills will reach saturation in the 2020s. There are more than 50,000 buildings in Hong Kong over 30 years old and which may require extensive refurbishment under the Mandatory Building Scheme. Additionally, most new owners/tenants tend to renovate their premises before moving in. Hence, there is an urgent need in Hong Kong, to explore strategies and measures to enable the development of effective refurbishment and renovation (R&R) waste management for such projects. The objectives of this paper are to investigate the process of R&R for identifying the perceived barriers and thereby the strategies for minimisation and management of R&R waste in Hong Kong.Design/methodology/approachDesktop study, semi-structured interviews, site observations and document reviews were used as the data collection methods to achieve the objectives of this research. Considering the nature and characteristics of the industry structure, the snowball sampling process was deployed for data collection. Thematic analysis and content analysis were used for data analysis. Waste minimisation and management strategies for R&R projects were then discussed and developed by the research team and a focus group meeting was held to validate the research findings. Six strategies were then proposed to the government.FindingsR&R projects contribute 10–20% of the construction and demolition waste. The barriers to recycling of R&R waste can be grouped into six major categories: (1) lack of sorting and storage spaces, (2) high cost, (3) insufficient government supporting policy, (4) complicated recycling processes, (5) immature recycling market and (6) insufficient public education. Also, six strategies are proposed in this study, which include (1) pre-refurbishment audit, (2) development of recycling market, (3) sea reclamation, (4) incineration, (5) government support and (6) education and research.Originality/valueThe strategies and measures proposed in this research could most adequately serve as reference for the government officials, building professionals and academic researchers. Such knowledge would make possible the development of effective strategies and measures for minimising and managing R&R waste.

Construction and demolition waste can be used as a substitution of natural aggregate in mortar and concrete elaboration. A poorer quality of recycled aggregates generally has negative impact on mortar properties. Shrinkage is one of the properties that experiences worse outcome due to the higher absorption of recycled aggregates. This research evaluates the potential shrinkage of mortars elaborated with recycled concrete aggregates both with and without fibres addition, as well as the relation between moisture loss and shrinkage caused by mortar drying process using a capacitive sensor of the authors’ own design. Two different mortar dosages 1:3 and 1:4 and three fiber types: polypropylene fiber, fiberglass and steel fiber, in different proportions were used. Obtained results show that the use of polypropylene fiber improves the recycled mortars performance against shrinkage in 0.2%. Moreover, a clear relation between dry shrinkage and moisture loss was observed.

The generation of construction and demolition waste (CDW) is a problem for societies aspiring to sustainability. In this regard, governments have the responsibility to support the CDW recycling through subsidies. However, the information asymmetry, as well as the “dynamic nature” of the CDW recycling market, results in a number of barriers for the government to promote CDW recycling. In this paper, we establish a mathematical model that includes the government and the recycling enterprise in the presence of dual information asymmetry including the unknown recycling technology level and unobservable recycling efforts in one-stage and two-stage cooperation. Using the incentive theory, the static and dynamic optimal recycling incentive contracts of the government were designed, and the optimal decisions of the recycler were identified. A numerical simulation revealed that by designing reasonable contracts, the government can encourage the recycler to report the true technical level and achieve information screening. Furthermore, the subsidy of the high-tech recycler remained unchanged under different circumstances. However, the subsidy of the low-tech recycler was closely related to the probability of misreporting and the proportion of technology types. This finding suggests that the government and recycler are inclined towards long-term dynamic cooperation.

In order to investigate the formulation of appropriate environmental regulations in construction and demolition waste (CDW) recycling, this paper establishes a CDW recycling decision-making system consisting of a contractor, a developer, and the government and analyses the decision-making results and influencing factors of the various stakeholders. Three different types of environmental regulations have been considered in the model: (i) no regulation, (ii) incentive regulation, and (iii) punitive regulation. The research shows that the incentive regulation offers the constructor greater incentives to recycle CDW and yields higher profits for members of the system, and however, when recycling is very costly and CDW is highly damaging, punitive regulation should be implemented, as the incentive regulation leads to lower social welfare. In addition, governments should be more cautious when adopting incentive regulation, because social welfare may be negative under this condition whereas there is no such possibility under the punitive regulation.

The manufacturing sector in South East Nigeria has many challenges concerning the incorporation of sustainability into the corporate strategies and operations of the industry, given its extractive nature and the numerous social and environmental impacts related to production activity. Attaining organizational sustainability requires the implementation of environmental management practice tools that create long-term value by embracing opportunities and managing risks derived from economic, environmental, and social developments. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of environmental management practice tools on the sustainability of manufacturing organizations. The goal of the study was to determine the relationship between environmental management practice tools and sustainability. A survey design was used for this study. A total of 363 questionnaires were distributed to the employees of the manufacturing firms, which included managers, supervisors, and line staff. The data collected were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Primarily, the study established that environmental management practice tools were significantly and positively related to sustainability. Thus, the study concluded that environmental management practice tools contribute significantly and positively to firms’ social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Additionally, the result of this study underlines the significance to manufacturing firms of carrying out environmental management practices. The ramifications are that manufacturing firms attempting to assert sustainability through EMP should have related knowledge with EMP. Furthermore, their environmental advantages will not convert into sustainability. The study adds to the body of knowledge by giving experimental pieces of proof identifying the interrelationships between EMP and sustainability.

Abstract The recycling issues related to the construction and demolition (C&D) wastes in the sustainable development and the circular economy context represent a continuous challenge for researchers. This paper reveals the possibility to recycle the hardened mortar recovered from C&D wastes. Thus, the recovered hardened mortar with grains size less than 16 mm was used in the concrete structure. The compression resistance of the final concrete was determined using a Heckert 3000 KN testing machine and the results showed a better compressive strength for the samples with C&D waste content than the standard sample of about 1.19 times. This is a good premise for improving the researches related to C&D waste usage in concrete production.
