This paper draws on Martha Nussbaum’s account of the nature of human well-being to explore the role of animals in formal education settings. Nussbaum equates well-being with human flourishing, and argues that people live well when engaged in essential functions that are particular capabilities, each a necessary but insufficient contributor to well-being. One of these capabilities is the ability to “to have concern for and live with other animals, plants and the environment.” Yet, this condition of well-being remains largely unexplored among in education. In recent years, the benefits of human-animal interaction in education settings has been researched and discussed in the social sciences, particularly  the use of dogs to aid reluctant readers in literacy development, and the use of therapy dogs in universities during final examination blocks. This paper presents findings of one particular research project of the effects of a unique, Canadian school-based cooperative education program, “Under One Woof,” in which students work with animals.  Based on interviews, students’ own stories of the impact of animal interaction – particularly in light of other challenges they faced academically and socially – appear to support other empirical accounts of positive effects of animals in education settings, and offer insight into the nature and effects of human-animal interaction as an element of well-being.

By its nature, education has 3 forms that are in a strong interdependence: formal, non-formal and informal. Non-formal education can be defined as a form of education implemented by schools in partnership with different educational institutions, using extracurricular activities, to help students deepen knowledge acquired in schools. A good example of this definition is the program “To know more, to be better!” implemented by the Romanian Ministry of Education since 2012. The main aim of this research was to analyze the impact of the above mentioned program upon students and teachers from Bihor County, Romania. The instrument used was a questionnaire with 18 questions. The sample consisted of 125 teachers from pre-primary, primary, secondary and high schools from Bihor County, Romania. The study was conducted in April 2014. The results of the research show that the majority of respondents have been pleased with this program, which has been popular among students as well. The latter ones were helped to better understand the theoretical knowledge they acquired during classes. The most frequent extracurricular activities of the program included visits, trips, workshops etc. Key words: extracurricular activities, non-formal education, school results.

The aim of the research presented in this paper was to study the contribution of theatre pedagogy to the social and individual development of students in the teaching of German as a foreign language. The target group included respondents of majority Serbian nationality and minority ethnic Roma. Semi-structured group discussions were used as an interactive data collection technique in qualitative research. The results suggest that directed theatre pedagogy activities contribute to a reduction in the level of social distance in an ethnically heterogeneous group, and that intergroup contacts in this type of activity stimulate peer interaction and a sense of unity regardless of individual differences. Social development has also affected individual development on three levels: conative, cognitive and affective. In view of the fact that supradisciplinary collaboration between theatrology, pedagogy and language teaching methodology is conducive to the creation of a context of active collaborative learning, the concepts of theatre pedagogy should be integrated into curricular and/or extracurricular activities. In this way, students from deprived groups and from the majority population would be motivated to enrich intergroup relationships in the system of formal education with their talents and abilities, which is a precondition for developing intercultural education and awareness of its importance.

18615 Background: The style of the surrounding in which cancer patients, who experience physical as well as high psychological distress are treated, can help them to acquire a sense of security, to reduce their anxiety and depression. Inspired by this model the famous artist F. Hundertwasser created the redesign of the oncological ward with the aim to generate an atmosphere of security by utilizing bright, warm and vivid colours, light and plants. The aim of this study was to investigate in a prospective manner whether the artistic redesign have an influence on the welfare of cancer patients using standardized questionnaires pre and immediately post reconstruction and in a follow up 10 years later. Methods: A total of 261 patients were interviewed (93 before the redesign, 81 immediately and 87 ten years after redesign) to assess the influence of depression (Zerssen Depression Scale, PD-S) quality of life (Spitzer Index)and perceptions of the ward design (semi-structured interview) on wellbeing (Zerrsen Mood Scale, Bf-S). Results: A factor analysis of the semi-structured interview yielded four factors assessed with a MANOVA showing that patients interviewed after redesign reported more positive effects of the ward design (F2;227 = 484.274; p < 0.001). In addition, they were more content with treatment and medical care (F2;227 = 20.103; p < 0.001), more positive in their emotions and thoughts regarding illness (F2;227 = 8.600; p = 0.003) and placed greater importance on the fixtures (F2;227 = 6.067; p = 0.003) than the patients interviewed before the redesign. In a regression analysis depression, the “impact of ward design”, quality of life, gender, “emotions and thoughts regarding illness”, age and education predicted wellbeing with an “R” of 0.0469 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results provide important aspects for the discussion if the physical surroundings in which cancer patients are treated serve as a potentially positive factor in the “healing process”. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Although extensive research has been carried out on the positive effects of flipped learning in a first language context, there remains a paucity of evidence on the impact of flipped learning in a second language context specifically in Bhutan. The present study was undertaken to examine Bhutanese students’ attitudes and perceptions toward the flipped learning approach in a second language context. The participants of this study were forty students (20 females and 20 males). Data collection instruments used in this study were questionnaire and semi-structured interview. Findings from the questionnaire demonstrated that the flipped learning approach helped learners to learn grammar; moreover, the students showed positive attitudes and perceptions towards the flipped classroom approach. Similarly, findings from a semi-structured interview revealed four important themes of the flipped learning approach, which are: conducive learning atmosphere, use of more technology, better relationship, and collaboration.

The main objective of the present study was to examine the impact of globalization on the teaching profession based on teacher views. Furthermore, the study aimed to make recommendations for the practitioners and the researchers based on the study findings. In the study, the qualitative phenomenology research method was used and the participants were determined with maximum variety sampling method. The study group included 40 teachers employed in schools located at Adıyaman province central district in Turkey. A semi-structured interview form was used to collect the data in the study. The first section of the interview form included questions on participant demographics (gender, department, seniority, employment school type and education). The second part of the interview form included 5 questions that aimed to determine the participants' views on the impact of globalization on teaching profession. Descriptive and content analysis were conducted to analyze the study data. Based on the descriptions of the teachers on the concept of global teacher, it could be defined as a global citizen and a universal teacher who has knowledge on the global changes and developments and improves herself or himself accordingly and possesses the qualifications and competencies required by globalization in the study. Study findings demonstrated that globalization has resulted in changes in certain existing roles of the teachers. In the study, it was determined that globalization had negative effects besides several positive effects on teachers' qualifications. Based on the study findings, it could be argued the amendments in the teacher education system in Turkey did not reflect an adequate response to the impacts of globalization. On the other hand, it was observed that globalization had mostly positive effects on the teacher training process, however it was determined that there were certain adverse effects as well as these positive effects.

Obtaining dietetic licensure in Ontario requires completion of a Dietitians of Canada (DC) accredited four-year undergraduate degree in nutrition and an accredited post-graduate internship or combined Master’s degree program. Given the scarcity of internship positions in Ontario, each year approximately two-thirds of the eligible applicants who apply do not receive a position XX, XX, XX, XX, XX, XX, in press). Anecdotally, not securing an internship position is known to be a particularly disconcerting experience that has significant consequences for individuals’ personal, financial, and professional well-being. However, no known empirical research has yet explored students’ experiences of being unsuccessful in applying for internship positions. Fifteen individuals who applied between 2005 and 2009 to an Ontario-based dietetic internship program, but were unsuccessful at least once, participated in a one-on-one semi-structured interview. Findings reveal that participants’ experiences unfold successively in four phases that are characterized by increasingly heightened emotional peril: naïveté, competition, devastation, and frustration. The authors conclude that the current model of dietetic education and training in Ontario causes lasting distress to students and hinders the future growth and vitality of the dietetic profession. Further research is required to understand the impact of the current model on dietetic educators, internship coordinators, and preceptors as coincident participants in the internship application process.

Digitalization is a megatrend, but there is relatively little knowledge about its consequences for service work in general and specifically in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). We studied the impact of digitalization on psychological consequences for employees in tax consultancies as a special case of KIBS. We compare two tax consulting jobs with very different job demands, those of tax consultants (TCs) and assistant tax consultants (ATCs). The results show that the extent of digitalization at the workplace level for ATCs correlates significantly positively with their job satisfaction. For TCs, the same variable correlates positively with their work engagement. These positive effects of digitalization are mediated in the case of ATCs by the impact on important job characteristics. In the case of TCs, which already have very good working conditions, the impact is mediated by the positive effect on self-efficacy. Theoretical and practical consequences of these results are discussed.
