Eugenia roxburghii is an evergreen graceful shrub with a tremendous potential as garden plant. As a part of ex-situ conservation and popularization of the species, seed longevity was studied by understanding the relationship of seed viability with respect to different moisture contents and storage temperature. Seeds are recognized as recalcitrant, being desiccation as well as chilling sensitive. During hermetic storage, seeds stored at 300C/70%RH retained viability for about 5 months and 4 months in 200C/20% RH. Seeds can be best stored for five months in laboratory conditions.

Seeds of Garcinia talbotii remained viable hardly for two weeks in open room conditions. As part of ex-situ conservation of Garcinia talbotii, seeds longevity was studied since seeds are the main propagule. For this, the relationship of seed viability with respect to different moisture content and storage temperature were analyzed. Seed storage behaviour is also investigated. Being recalcitrant, seeds are desiccation sensitive as well as chilling sensitive. During hermetic storage of seeds at 300C /70 % RH seeds retained viability about 6 months.

Background: A high proportion of Asteraceae species are considered weeds, some of them have recognizable biological properties. To design production protocols and ex situ seed conservation programs is necessary to determine the effect of storage temperature on seed viability and longevity. It is known that cold temperatures maintain seed viability and thus prolong seed longevity. Hypotheses: The seeds of Aldama dentata, Verbesina virgata, Stevia origanoides and Roldana barba-johannis stored at low temperature (5 ºC) will have greater longevity than when stored at room temperature (16.45 ± 1.94 oC) and will decrease their viability as they age. Study site and dates: Seeds of the four Asteraceae were collected (November-December 2015) in The National Park “El Tepozteco”, Morelos, Mexico and in the “Chamilpa” campus of the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos. Methods: The monthly germination experiments (11) were implemented with seeds stored under both temperatures, germination (%) and mean germination time were registered to estimate seed longevity. The seed viability stored at room temperature was evaluated with the tetrazolium test. Results: Germination and viability decreased with seed age. Along the experiment, seed germination was similar at both storage temperatures. A. dentata and S. origanoides showed the highest germination but A. dentata alone reached the major seed viability. The oldest seeds germinated faster. Conclusions: Seed longevity of all the species exceeded one year. For propagation purposes, it is recommended to use seeds between 8 and 9 months of age, when their germination and viability are the highest.

Abstract A national survey was conducted to ascertain the relationship of the cyclohexylamine content of cyclamate-containing products to their composition, processing, and storage conditions. Cyclohexylamine was found in 174 of the 232 samples examined. The cyclohexylamine content range for each major type of food product was as follows: 0.0–8.2 ppm for carbonated beverages; 0.0–5.8 ppm for dry beverage bases; 0.0–1.5 ppm for fruit juices; 0.0–0.8 ppm for weight control foods; and 0.3–66 ppm for food sweetener preparations (liquid and dry base). No correlation between the cyclamate content of products and the cyclohexylamine present was evident. However, the findings indicate that significant hydrolysis of cyclamate can occur.

Bosc is a winter cultivar of european pear (Pyrus communis) that has a relatively short storage life partially due to a high ethylene production rate (EPR) during cold storage. ‘Bosc’ pears were harvested at commercial maturity and treated with gas 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) at 0, 0.15, and 0.3 µL·L−1 and stored at −1.1 °C for 8 months. Results indicated that all 1-MCP treatments inhibited EPR and respiration rate (RR), retarded the degradation of chlorophyll and titratable acidity (TA), and extended storage quality; but inhibited ripening capacity. 1-MCP at 0.15 and 0.3 µL·L−1 had the same efficacy on keeping fruit quality although its higher rate was more efficient on inhibiting EPR and RR. The expression of ethylene synthesis genes (PcACS1, PcACS2, PcACS4, PcACS5, and PcACO1) and receptor genes (PcETR1, PcETR2, and PcERS1) was upregulated in control fruit during storage and they were downregulated significantly by 1-MCP treatments. In contrast, the ethylene receptor genes of PcETR5 and PcCTR1 were downregulated in control fruit during storage and were unaffected by 1-MCP treatments. Although the transcription levels of chlorophyll degradation genes PcPPH, PcNOL, PcSGR, PcRCCR, PcNYC, and PcPAO were all upregulated in control fruit during storage and downregulated by 1-MCP; only PcCHL was downregulated in the control and 1-MCP had no consistent effect on it. The relationship of ethylene biosynthesis/perception with chlorophyll degradation and storage quality in european pears was discussed.

Seeds of 20 pigeon pea (<em>Cajanus cajan </em>(L.) Millsp.) genotypes were evaluated for seed longevity and vigour under humid ambient conditions. Cleaned seeds of each genotype were packed into a polyethylene bag, the packaged lot was electrically sealed and thereafter placed in a seed store under ambient conditions (30 ºC, RH 75 %). Seed samples were withdrawn at 0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 days after storage for seed quality parameters evaluation. The experiment consisted of two factors which were genotype and storage duration and was a laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Data were collected on rate of seed germination, seed viability, seedling length, seedlings fresh mass, seedlings dry mass and seedling vigour index. Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance and significant treatment means were separated using Tukey’s HSD test at 5 % probability level. PROBIT modelling was also used to predict the seed longevity of stored pigeon pea. Significant differences were observed in all seed quality attributes evaluated among the 20 pigeon pea genotypes and storage time except seedling fresh mass. Seed quality attributes decreased significantly with increasing storage periods. Genotypes NSWCC-18A, NSWCC-24, NSWC-34 and NSWCC-29A were identified to be superior for most of the seed quality attributes evaluated. PROBIT modelling result revealed that genotype NSWCC-29b had the highest storage life (16.28 months) and the highest storage potentials in terms of seed viability and other seed quality attributes of all seed lots.

Abstract The electron microscopic appearance of platelets incubated at 37 C. and stored at 4 C. are described, and the relationship of these changes to normal platelet structure are discussed together with the hypothesis that the observation may be due to lysosome activity of some of the platelet granules. The platelet’s ATP level during incubation and storage was also followed and it was concluded that this relates more to the platelet’s ability to sustain clot retraction than to its viability.

Nothofagus alpina,N. obliqua,N. glauca,N. leonii,N. dombeyiandN. pumilioseeds exhibited consistent, albeit slight, sensitivity to extreme desiccation, but nevertheless maintained viability at low moisture contents and cool temperatures (–10° to –20°C) over 2 years.Nothofagus alpina,N. obliqua,N. glauca,N. leoniiandN. dombeyiconformed to the seed viability equation of Ellis and Roberts; sensitivity of longevity to temperature was quantitatively similar to that of crop seeds, sensitivity to moisture was somewhat less, and a low-moisture-content limit to the equation was detected at 4.8% moisture content in hermetic storage at 65 °C, and possibly similar moisture contents at 30–40°C. These five species show orthodox seed storage behaviour. Therefore,ex-situconservation of theseNothofagusspecies in seed banks is possible, but the quality of seed lots collected requires attention. Seed storage behaviour was not defined inN. pumilio: initial seed quality was poor and loss of viability was detected over 2 years at 0°, –10° and –20°C at 2.7% moisture content, but not at 5.2%. The results confirm that the economy of nature in seed storage physiology extends to forest tree seeds, but the repeated observation of reduced sensitivity of longevity to moisture in forest tree seeds requires further investigation.

All foods have limited shelf life which vary depending on the food and storage conditions. Table eggs are perishable food and storage temperature is an important factor that affects the shelf life. In tropical countries like Nigeria, eggs are usually preserved under ambient condition due to erratic power supply, which reduces the efficiency of refrigeration system. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of storage periods, temperature and their relationship on the pH of chicken egg internal properties (yolk, albumen and whole egg). Fresh chicken table eggs were randomly allotted to three treatments of storage temperatures; refrigerator (40C ? 2), laboratory (320c ? 4), and poultry store room (370C ? 4). Eggs were assigned to treatments in a completely randomized design, and each treatment was replicated thrice. The pH was measured daily for each storage temperature in all treatments. Storage temperature and periods had significant (P<0.05) effect on pH of measured parameters. The pH values increased with storage temperature and period of storage. The rate of pH increase was significantly (P<0.05) higher in ambient as compared to refrigerator temperature. In this study, only the refrigerator storage has pH values within the range for fresh table eggs. At storage period above three weeks, pH values increased beyond the range for fresh egg. It is validated that storage temperature and period affected egg shelf life, the rate of freshness reduced with increased temperature, thus, storage beyond three weeks of ambient temperature is not advisable in humid tropics.

The challenge of providing cocoa seeds is the characteristic of recalcitrant seed, thus requiring storage techniques that can slow down the decline in seed viability in an effort to manage the distribution of cocoa seeds which depend to the time of demand and harvest. The research aimed to study the effect ofpackaging method for storage of cocoa seeds; the effect of shelf life and temperature to germination and water content of seeds, and the stability of seed germination at different age and storage temperature. The research was conducted at Kaliwining Experimental Station, Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute, Jember, East Java. The research used complete randomized design with research design using split plot. The treatments consisted of packaging methods, storage temperature and storage life. Packaging methods consisted of two methods, i.e. vacuum methods and non vacuum methods. Storage temperature consisted of three treatments, i.e. 15OC, 25OC and 30OC. both of packaging and temperature treatments were stored at four shelf life treatment included 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks. Each treatment was repeated with three replications and each treatment per replication consisted of 50 seeds. Data analysis used SAS 9.0 and stability analysis used R program and PB Tool. Water content of seeds, germination of seeds and number of seedy seeds were observed. The results showed that type of packaging and storage temperature effect to germination of cocoa seeds but did not effect to seeds water content. Storage of cocoa seeds by non-vacuum packaging showed a higher of germination compared to vacuum packaging in all temperature treatments. Storage with non vacuum packaging at a temperature 25OC showed a germination more than 85% for 2 weeks of shelf life, while storage of cocoa seeds at a temperature of 30OC had a germination of more than 85% for only 1 week shelf life. Storage of cocoa seed at 15OC showed the lowest of germination at treatment. Storage treatments did not show effect on water content of cocoa seeds.

Abstract Emerging technologies are efficient alternatives for satisfying the growing demand for sustainable and cheap energy sources. Piezoelectrics are one of the most promising energy sources derived from emerging technologies. These materials are capable of converting mechanical energy into electricity or vice versa. Piezoelectrics have been used for almost a hundred years to generate electrical and sound pulses. However, the use of piezoelectrics for power generation is constrained by the cost associated with equipment and infrastructure. This problem has been addressed through mathematical models that relate the physical and electrical properties of the piezoelectric material with the voltage generated. Although these models have high performance, they do not incorporate voltage rectification and electrical charge storage stages. This work presents a mathematical model that describes the relationship of the physical and electromechanical properties of a system employing a piezoelectric for energy generation. The voltage of the system and the charge stored in a capacitor are calculated through this model. Also, contour diagrams are presented as a tool for facilitating the efficiency of energy generation.
