Aim of study: Trait prioritization of potential olive (Olea europaea L.) breeding objectives has been evaluated in this work from two surveys to researchers working on olive and olive producers / orchard managers. Area of study: Olive growing area in Andalusia (South of Spain) Material and methods: Twenty-five breeding objectives were associated to plant growth, fructification, oil content and composition, resistance to pest and disease and tolerance to soil and climatic conditions. Two assessment methods were applied (ranking and rating), showing similar results in both the researchers and producers surveys. Main results: Higher productivity was the objective with the highest score, followed by Verticillium wilt resistance and higher oil content. After them, tolerance to water stress and resistance to Xylella fastidiosa were among the preferred objectives. Conversely, the least preferred objectives were late harvesting, high fruit size and tolerance to water lodging and calcareous soils. In the producers’ survey, results have been consistent among the different types of orchards and farmers’ characteristics. It is also interesting to notice that more than 50% of the producers expressed their willingness to orchard enlargement or renewal in the three coming years and 25% of them would change the olive cultivar. They would be willing to pay an average 43% overprice for new cultivar fulfilling their requirements and 75% would support the use of genetic modified olives. Research highlights: These results should be considered to analyze the scope of current breeding programs and define the main criteria to be considered for future works aiming at developing new olive cultivars.

LE002 and MT087 cultivar candidates had olive fruits their color is never turn black from green until they fall down. So that their olives described as evergreen fruit. In this study olives were harvested at of first day of November normally other olive cultivars have whole black olive but LE002 and MT087 have green olives. Oil and dry matter content of LE002 and MT087 fruits were determined after that oils were produced by cold press and free fatty acid content, peroxide value and absorbency in ultraviolet light of oils were detected. Dry matter and oil content of olives were 41,0% and 19,47% for MT087 and 45,96% and 23,42% for LE002. Oil content of green olives were lower than these detected values for Marmara region of Turkey. All the analyses result of oils was between the limits of olive oil standards and regulations. So that both these cultivar candidates should be more analyzed to be determine their oil characteristics for future cultivar registration and certification steps.


Castor oil (Ricinus communus L.) is an important commercial product. The climatic conditions of Ukraine determine the possibility of growing the castor as an annual crop. At the Institute of Oilseeds NAAS studied castor collection. The aim of the work was the selection of the most promising samples of castor oil, combining a large yield potential in a narrow range of vertical distribution for optimal technological parameters of mechanical harvesting with a high content of oil in seeds and ricinolic acid in oil. In the experience of 2015-2016, the manifestation of morphological features of 17 castor bean samples was studied. The height of plants, individual samples among themselves differed more than twice. Long-brush samples of ЕР118, К374, М203, К159 are distinguished on the basis of the length of the brush. The shortest brush was observed in sample K1008. The length of the productive brush in the studied samples is from 10.7 to 32.9 cm. Most castor bean samples under favorable conditions form brushes of the second and higher orders. According to this parameter, samples of Ep118 and selection No. 38 with four inflorescences of the second order are of the greatest interest. The largest brushes of the second order are similar in size to the brushes of the first order were observed in the samples: К1127, К810, К153. The adaptability of harvesting castor beads requires that the brushes of the first and second order coincide in height with each other, since the harvester can take a maximum of 60 cm. For the sum of the productive brushes of the first and second orders, the greatest potential yield will be provided by samples K159 and K1127. Among the studied collection stands out the small seed sample K159 and the large seed samples - PRL41 and K80. The average oil content in the seeds of the collection was from 52 to 61.4%. Sample38 had the highest oil content. The content of ricinolic acid in the collection was from 70.9 to 82.9%. Samples were isolated: К134, К1008, PRL41, К430 with the content of ricinoleic acid more than 80%. The results of the study of all parameters make it possible to isolate valuable technological samples. Sample K1064 with a high technological potential of productivity, with a seed oil content of 57.2%, has a not very high content of ricinoleic acid of 74.3%. Sample K1127 with an oil content of 58.6%, a mass of 1000 seeds of 265 g, a high potential of productive brushes has a wide variation in the arrangement of brushes. Sample K134 with a oil content of 57.1%, ricinoleic acid content of 80.7% has small second-order brushes and can be used as a single-cysts in a thicker seeding.

Olive (Olea europaea L.) is a species of great economic importance in the Mediterranean basin. Italy is very important for the olive industry; in fact, olive's genetic patrimony is very rich and characterized by an abundance of cultivars. At present, the majority of ancient landraces are vegetatively propagated by farm. It is likely that the number of cultivars is underestimated because of inadequate information on minor local cultivars that are widespread in different olive-growing areas. The existence of many cultivars reinforces the need for a reliable identification method. It is important to improve the ex situ plant germplasm collection and fairly to characterize all cultivars for future breeding programs. In the present report, we used 11 loci microsatellites to characterize 211 olive cultivars of an olive collection cultivated in six regions of southern Italy. These regions represent the major area for olive cultivation in Italy and have a strategic geographical location in the Mediterranean basin. The dendrogram obtained, using the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean clustering algorithm, depicts the pattern of relationships between the studied cultivars. There is a clear structuring of the variability relative to the geographic origin of olive cultivars. This work, for the very high number of the Italian olive cultivars analyzed, highlights the degree and distribution of genetic diversity of this species for better exploitation of olive resources and for the design of plant breeding programs. Besides, the use of molecular markers, like simple sequence repeats, is imperative to build a database for cultivar analysis, for traceability of processed food, and for appropriate management of olive germplasm collections.

The evergreen tree olive (Olea europaea L.) is the only species of the genus Olea that produces edible fruits with high ecological and economic value. This tree species has developed a series of physiochemical mechanisms to tolerate drought stress and grow under adverse climatic environments. One of these mechanisms is photosynthesis activities, so that as yet little information achieved about the relations between olive production and photosynthetic parameters under drought conditions. An experiment was carried out during two consecutive years (2015–2017) to study the response of 20 different olive tree cultivars (Olea europaea L.) to drought stress. Several parameters like net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (GS), transpiration rate (TE), photosynthetic pigments (total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid) and fruit yield were measured. The results of combined analysis of variance for fruit yield and other measured traits showed that year, drought treatment, cultivar main effects and their interactions were highly significant. The results indicated that drought stress reduced all traits, however GS (42.80%), PN (37.21%) and TE (37.17%) significantly affected by drought. Lower reduction in photosynthetic performance (PN, GS and TE) in the cultivar T7 compared to other olive cultivars allowed them to maintain better fruit yield. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified two PCs that accounted for 82.04 and 83.27% of the total variation in photosynthetic parameters under optimal and drought stress conditions, respectively. Taken together, mean comparison, relative changes due to drought and biplot analysis revealed that cultivars ‘T7’, ‘Roghani’, ‘Koroneiki’, ‘Korfolia’ and ‘Abou-satl’ displayed better response against drought stress. According to our results, one olive cultivar namely ‘T7’, could be used in olive breeding programs to improve new high yielding cultivars with drought tolerance for use in the drought-prone environments.

Currently in Mexico there are few studies on agronomic management in olive production. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate eleven olive cultivars for table and oil production (Arbequina, Koroneiki, Arbosana, Kalamata, Barnea, Pendolino, Empeltre, Manzanilla of Sevilla, Carboncella, Frantoio and Cassaliva) under hot and arid environment of Mexico. The experiment was carried out during two consecutive years in 2015 and 2016 at National Research Institute for Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock (INIFAP) in the Experimental Station of Caborca, Sonora, Mexico. The plantation was done on March, 2012 using a density of 100 trees ha-1 (10 x 10 m) under drip irrigation system. The parameters evaluated were vegetative parameters, yield, fruit quality and oil content. The experiment was analyzed using a randomized complete block design and five replications. The results showed statistical differences for all parameters evaluated. Arbequina obtained the highest olive yield with 34.5 and 70.3 kg per tree for the first and second year production, respectively and Barnea recorded the highest oil content with 19.2%. Finally, Manzanilla of Sevilla and Barnea varieties represent a good option as double-purpose varieties.

Traditional olive orchards in Spain have been planted at a density of 70 to 80 trees per ha with three trunks per tree. During the last decade, the hedgerow orchard, in which planting density is approximately 2,000 trees per ha, was developed. In 2006 and 2007, we noted a severe outbreak of fruit rot in FS-17, a new cultivar from Italy, in an experimental hedgerow planting in Córdoba, southern Spain. The incidence of fruit rot in ‘FS-17’ was 80% in January of 2006 and 24% in January of 2007. Cvs. Arbosana, IRTA-i18 (a selected clone from ‘Arbequina’), and Koroneiki had no symptoms in either year of the study. Disease incidence in ‘Arbequina’ was <0.1% only in 2006. Affected fruits were soft with gray-white skin and they eventually mummified. Black-green sporodochia were observed on the surface of diseased fruits. A fungus was isolated from diseased fruits on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 22 to 26°C with a 12-h photoperiod. After 8 days of growing on PDA, fungal colonies formed conidial chains having a main axis with up to 10 conidia and secondary and tertiary short branches with two to four conidia. Conidia were obpyriform, ovoid, or ellipsoidal, without a beak or with a short beak, had up to four transverse septa, and measured 11.7 to 24.7 (mean 19.6) μm long and 7.7 to 13.0 (mean 9.6) μm wide at the broadest part of the conidium. The length of the beak of conidia was variable, ranging from 0 to 28.6 (mean 5.5) μm. The fungus was identified as Alternaria alternata (1). Pathogenicity tests were performed by spraying 40 mature fruits of ‘FS-17’ with a spore suspension (1 × 106 spores per ml). The same number of control fruits was treated with water. After 21 days, inoculated fruit developed symptoms that had earlier been observed in the field. A. alternata was reisolated from lesions on all infected fruits. The fungus was not isolated from any of the control fruits. The experiment was performed twice. The new growing system and the high susceptibility of some olive cultivars, such as FS-17, may result in a high incidence of disease caused by a pathogen that is generally characterized as weakly virulent. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A. alternata causing a severe outbreak of fruit rot on olive trees in the field. References: (1) B. M. Pryor and T. J. Michailides. The Mesembryanthemaceae, which inhabit the deserts and semi-deserts of Southern Africa, exhibit two very different types of epidermis. The first is characterized by thick outer cell walls encrusted by oxalate crystals, a thick cuticle and thick wax layers. In the second type, the epidermal cells exhibit only very thin outer cell walls, not encrusted by oxalate crystals, a very thin cuticle, and wax layers are poorly developed; the most prominent feature of this type is the occurrence of huge idioblasts often protruding as ‘bladder cells’. With regard to the climatic conditions in the native habitats this type of epidermis must be called ‘abnormal’. Both types of epidermis may form sculptures of three distinct size classes, which are not necessarily homologous. The function of these sculptures is still poorly understood. There is evidence that the sculptures influence the optical properties of the surfaces and thereby the radiation balance (and heat stress) of the leaves.From recent research, it has become evident that the two different types of epidermis are the anatomical expression of two different strategies for survival under extreme conditions. Species with the idioblast type of epidermis exhibit a strategy that might be called ‘opportunistic’. These species have developed a mechanism of gaining water from the atmosphere during the night under favourable conditions. There are indications that the idioblasts are involved in this mechanism.

Flaxseed from plots seeded at Ottawa and Saskatoon over a period of several weeks and harvested at maturity showed no difference in oil content with dates of seeding, but the iodine values tended to increase with late seeding. Experiments conducted with Bison and Redwing grown in 1936 at Brandon, Saskatoon Edmonton, and Fallis, and with Redwing in 1937 at Brandon, Edmonton, and Fallis, in which the seed was harvested at successive stages of maturity, showed that moisture decreased and dry kernel weight and oil content increased with progressive maturity up to approximately thirty days after flowering. Rate of oil deposition was in some cases extremely rapid, from 80% to 90% of the maximum oil found being deposited by the fifteenth to eighteenth day. Oil content and dry kernel weight reach a maximum several days before visual maturity. Unsaturation proceeds somewhat more slowly and reaches a higher value under climatic conditions favouring slow maturity.
