Adopting technology regarding agricultural crops has traditionally been associated with high costs. Producers have thus often abstained from adopting better agronomical practices and have consequently lost the benefits they could otherwise have obtained by implementing better criteria for managing their crops.This research builds on results by Ruiz et al., (2017) who found three typologies of oil palm lots, regarding adoption of technology and yields on oil palm crops from Colombia. This work was aimed at evaluating the typologies found by Ruiz et al. (2017) from an economic standpoint by using different economic assessment methods, in order to determine the benefits of technology adoption at the Colombian oil palm agroindustry. The methods used were aimed at estimating: unit cost, net present value (NPV), net income, land use efficiency, generation of income and competitiveness.Results indicate that the cost of producing a ton of fresh fruit bunches from oil palms (FFB) on lots having high adoption of technology was 2.5% to 8% lower when compared to lots having lower adoption of technology (Typologies 2 and 3. respectively). Technology adoption enables greater yearly net income to be obtained in mature oil palm crops in typology 1, than the one obtained at typology 2 and typology 3. The adoption of technology allows the grower to obtain net income equivalent to a legally-established yearly minimum wage (LEYMW), using less land. Finally, it was concluded that at average CPO prices for the period 2005-2015, the Colombian growers that participated in this study, may be competitive at the European market, which is the main destination of Colombian exports of crude palm oil (CPO).

This study builds on the results from a previous study (Ruiz, 2017), aimed to identify and quantify yield gaps in a sample of lots from small and medium scale producers, all suppliers of the same mill. The technical staff from the mill provides technical assistance to the aforementioned growers. This study was aimed at identifying what technological factors are associated with such gaps. Regarding the methodological approach, first, it was used the technology balance index (TBI) in order to quantify technology adoption. The TBI allows for rating technology adoption at oil palm crops by considering five processes (which comprehend 25 cropping practices). The processes evaluated are establishment, weeding and pruning, fertilizing, pests control and harvesting. The TBI assigns a category for each practice: high if it is fully adopted, intermediate if it is partially adopted and low if it is not adopted at all. Secondly, in order to determine those practices affecting yield gaps; we used a multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). MCA allowed to synthesize data into two dimensions with 51% of the variability given by the data gathered (qualification of the adoption of 25 crop management practices). Thirdly, we used cluster analysis in order to group lots according to adoption of technology. Then we related the obtained groups with the yield records. MCA results indicated that proper establishment, harvest and nutrition practices are the ones causing most of the variability in terms of technology adoption. The groups resulting from CA, provided evidence that a greater adoption of technology, leads greater yields (i.e. smaller yield gaps).

The harvest of oil palm fruit bunches represents 25% of the total cost of production of one metric ton of fresh fruit bunches (FFB), and nine-tenths of the costs of this process (i.e., harvest) are labor costs. This study was undertaken to analyze and compare the labor productivity and harvesting costs of young oil palm trees of the species Elaeis oleifera x E. guineensis (OxG) using two different cutting tools. The first tool was a chisel, and the second was a mechanized oil palm cutter. From a methodological perspective, we conducted a time and motion study. The results show that the average number of palms harvested by a worker using a chisel was 320 per workday (on average 291 fresh fruit bunches were cut per workday). A worker using a mechanized oil palm cutter (MOPC) harvested 546 palms per workday (on average 551 fresh fruit bunches were cut per workday). Finally, the cost per ton of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) harvested decreased by 15% following the MOPC; in other words, the implementation of this novel technology is cost-effective.

The purposes of this study were to know marketing channel, marketing margin, share, and marketing profit of fresh fruit bunches of oil palm in Tempakan Village, Batu Engau Subregency, Paser Regency. The study was conducted from June to August 2016. The sampling method was done with two ways as random sampling in farmer level and in marketing channel as snowball sampling. Data analysis were done by calculating marketing margin, share, and marketing profit. The results of this study showed that there are two marketing channels in reserach location are channel of level zero and channel of level one. Marketing margin in farmer level was Rp40.39 kg-1 and margin in whole trader level was Rp314.44 kg-1. The average share of farmer level was 97.58% and in trader level was 81.48%. Margin and share that profitable for farmer is at channel of level zero. The average of profit in whole trader level of fresh fruit bunches was 112.75%, that meant marketing by whole trader is profitable.

The near and mid-term future of the existing Polish coal-fired power fleet is uncertain. The longer-term operation of unabated coal power is incompatible with climate policy and is economically challenging because of the increasing price of CO2 emission allowances in the EU. The results of the techno-economic analysis presented in this paper indicate that the retrofit of existing coal-fired units, by means of replacing coal-fired boilers with small modular reactors, may be an interesting option for the Polish energy sector. It has been shown that the retrofit can reduce the costs in relation to greenfield investments by as much as 35%. This analysis focuses on the repowering of a 460 MW supercritical coal-fired unit based on the Łagisza power plant design with high temperature small modular nuclear reactors based on the 320 MWth unit design by Kairos Power. The technical analyses did not show any major difficulties in integrating. The economic analyses show that the proposed retrofits can be economically justified, and, in this respect, they are more advantageous than greenfield investments. For the base economic scenario, the difference in NPV (Net Present Value) is more favorable for the retrofit by 556.9 M€ and the discounted payback period for this pathway is 10 years.

ABSTRACTDo world politics affect the adoption of new technology? States overwhelmingly rely on technology invented abroad, and their differential intensity of technology use accounts for many of their differences in economic development. Much of the literature on technology adoption focuses on domestic conditions. The authors argue instead that the structure of the international system is critical because it affects the level of competition among states, which in turn affects leaders’ willingness to enact policies that speed technology adoption. Countries adopt new technology as they seek to avoid being vulnerable to attack or coercion by other countries. By systematically examining states’ adoption of technology over the past two hundred years, the authors find that countries adopt new technologies faster when the international system is less concentrated, that changes in systemic concentration have a temporally causal effect on technology adoption, and that government policies to promote technology adoption are related to concerns about rising international competition. A competitive international system is an important incentive for technological change and may underlie global technology waves.

Surfactants are amphiphilic molecules that have been used in widely used as emulsifier and cleaning agent in various industries. These broad industrial applications made the global surfactant production increased annually. In 2020, the amount of global surfactant production estimated would reach more than 24 million per year. However, the currently used surfactants are synthetically produced from chemical or petroleum-derived products, so it is often toxic and non-biodegradable. Rhamnolipids are “surfactant like” molecules produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which could be alternatives for more environmentally friendly surfactants. The use of rhamnolipids is quite limited due to its expensive production cost. The production cost of rhamnolipid could be reduced using by agro-industrial by-product as a substrate. One of the abundant agro-industrial by-products in Indonesia that can be used as a substrate for rhamnolipid production is Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (OPEFB). This study employed SuperPro Designer v9.5 to performed process simulation and economic assessment of rhamnolipid production using OPEFB as a substrate through two different purification methods, which are solvent extraction and chromatography adsorption. Based on the process simulation that has been done, the process that used adsorption chromatography purification methods more efficient in terms of the usage of the feedstock and energy. The economic assessment also showed that these methods were more profitable and economically attractive, with the value of NPV 11.400.000 USD, IRR 11,64%, and Payback Period 6,21 years.

This study analyzes oil palm production from 2001 - 2008 in Edo State, with a view of establishing the future of Nigerian Agricultural oil palm industries. The specific objectives were to identify and quantify the factors influencing the production of oil palm, reveal the constraints to the production of oil palm; analyze the viability of oil palm production as an investment and predict the future of oil palm enterprise in Edo State. Three Local Government Areas of high oil palm concentration in Edo State were covered. Ninety selected oil palm producers from nine villages in the study area were selected. Frequency distributions and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the results. The results showed that for the period under review (2001 - 2008) on a per hectare basis, seedlings cost, and labour cost were significant inputs, positively influencing the production of oil palm in the Edo State. A growth rate of 6.2% and 23.5% were projected for oil palm with reference to palm oil and fresh fruit bunches (FFB), respectively, up to the year 2020, an indication that oil palm production in the State is viable and the future is bright. The study revealed that inadequate storage facilities, poor planting materials and lack of government assistance, among others, are major bottlenecks in oil palm production in Edo State. However, since oil palm production in Edo State is viable, it is an indication that the future of Nigerian Agricultural Industries is bright.

Abstract The objective of this work was to estimate the genetic parameters, correlations, and selection gains for the oil production of interspecific hybrids progenies between American oil palm, of ‘Manicoré’ origin, and oil palm, of ‘La Mé’ origin. Thirty-nine progenies were evaluated from the sixth to the ninth year after planting, for the productivity of fresh fruit bunches (PROD_FFB), oil content in the bunch (OCB), and palm oil productivity (PROD_OP). The genetic parameters and gains from direct (GDS) and indirect (GIS) selection were estimated for PROD_OP. High values of heritability for the CVg/CVe ratio indicated favorable conditions for the selection. With the selection of 20% of the progenies (selection in both sexes), the following estimates were obtained: 11.15% GDS for PROD_OP, 9.1% GIS for OCB, and 8.1% GIS for PROD_FFB. The PROD_OP of the progenies was of 6,175, 6,057, and 5,995 kg ha-1 per year with GDS and GIS for OCB and PROD_FFB, respectively. The restricted selection of the LM2T male genitor offspring resulted in 5.1% estimated GSD and in a mean of 5,800 kg ha-1 per year for PROD_OP. Selection gains for PROD_OP can be achieved immediately through the selection restricted to oil palm male genitors, and, in the medium and long term, through the interspecific reciprocal recurrent selection between American oil palm and oil palm populations.

This article describes how fresh fruit bunches grown by oil palm smallholders are incorporated into oil palm marketing models in Indonesia. This emotional network marketing model is a supplementary model of marketing models in Malaysia which is called factory centered and middleman model. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected by conducted in-depth interviews with 28 informants coming from 4 (four) categories of oil palm smallholders: oil palm tauke (middleman) that included big tauke and small tauke, workers in the loading ramps, and workers in the oil palm factories who were involved in oil palm marketing channels. The result of the research showed that the oil palm marketing channel between smallholders and either small tauke and big tauke was based on an emotional network with a strong bond of friendship, brotherhood, dwelling location, cash payment, giving loan with reasonable requirements, and providing transportation for fresh fruit bunches. In contrast, oil palm marketing channel among smallholders, loading ramp buyers, and POF was based on regulations. This writing presented a different perspective of oil palm marketing channels in general by involving the emotional network of the existing actors for getting fresh fruit bunches and the advantages of oil palm marketing. In this marketing model, there is a longer marketing channel and actors with their varied roles.

Latar Belakan: kematian akibat PTM (Penyakit Tidak Menular) diperkirakan akan terus meningkat di seluruh dunia, peningkatan terbesar akan terjadi di negara-negara berkembang. Mempertahankan konsumen dan berusaha mendapatkan konsumen baru merupakan strategi wajib yang harus di jalankan oleh rumah sakit. Keberadaan konsumen sangat penting bagi bisnis rumah sakit karena konsumen merupakan roda bisnis rumah sakit. Rumah Sakit Bethesda Yogyakarta, berencana untuk melakukan investasi laboratorium Angiografi untuk menunjang fasilitas kesehatan yang sudah ada. Sebelum melakukan investasi penting untuk mengetahui berapa besar unit cost dan tarif yang akan ditetapkan selain itu juga perlu diketahui kemauan membayar (Willingness to Pay) dan kemampuan membayar (Ability to Pay) pasien terhadap penggunaan layanan. Metode Penelitian: penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan rancangan studi kasus yang dilakukan di Rumah Sakit Bethesda Yogyakarta. Sebanyak 265 orang dipilih sebagai responden, yang diambil dari poliklinik saraf dan penyakit dalam. Data primer terdiri dari data kemauan dan kemampuan pasien untuk melakukan pelayanan laboratorium angiografi. Data sekunder di dapatkan dari rumah sakit, penelitian terdahulu dan lainnya. Analisis investasi dihitung menggunakan Net Present Value, Internal Ratr of Return, payback Period dan Return On Investment. Hasil: Perhitungan dengan menggunakan analisis Net Present Value menghasilkan nilai sebesar Rp.23.569.363.711,-. Jika dibandingkan dengan nilai modal, NPV bernilai positif sehingga investasi ini layak dilaksanakan. Analisis Internal Rate of Return menghasilkan nilai 29% yang berarti lebih besar dari faktor diskonto artinya dengan menggunakan analisis ini investasi juga layak dilakukan. Perhitungan menggunakan Payback Period diketahui masa balik modal investasi laboratorium angiografi adalah selama tiga tahun tujuh bulan dan Return On Invesment menunjukkan pelayanan laboratrium angiografi berkemampuan untuk menghasilkan laba sebesar 120%. Kesimpulan: hasil penelitian menunjukkan investasi laboratorium angiografi dari aspek keuangan layak dilakukan. Kemauan masyarakat untuk menggunakan layanan cukup tinggi namun dari segi kemampuan rata-rata masih rendah.
