The main purpose of this article is to present methods and techniques that can be used in the process of teaching a foreign language at preschool age. The first aspects to be addressed are developmental features of children, such as mechanical memory, short attention span, emotions and physiology of brain. The following issue described in the article refers to conventional methods, such as the Direct Method and the Audiolingual Method. The third part is devoted to unconventional methods, such as the Natural Approach, CLT, the Spiral Language System, as well as methods based on action (TPR), or - observation and words. They are supported by interesting techniques that are considered key factors in the discussed topic.

We present an overview of traditional and modern methods used in teaching children a foreign language at an early age. Feasibility of earlier foreign language competence development and need for training specialists with a narrow focus in foreign language teaching in the preschool education system are justified. We describe the age and psychological characteristics of younger learners. The categories of learners are characterized depending on the type of information perception: visual learners, aural learners, verbal learners, physical learners, logical learners, social learners and solitary learners. The factors motivating them to learn are substantiated, including a foreign language acquisition. The authors describe the methods and techniques that are commonly used in teaching English, such as Total Physical Response, the Natural Approach, Audiolingual Method, Communicative Method, CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning).

The article looks at book production and circulation from the point of view of translators, who, as purchasers and readers of foreign-language books, are an important mediating force in the selection of literature for translation. Taking the German publisher Tauchnitz's series ‘Collection of British Authors’ and its circulation in Finland in the nineteenth and early twentieth century as a case in point, the article argues that the increased availability of English-language books facilitated the acquiring and honing of translators' language skills and gradually diminished the need for indirect translating. Book history and translation studies meet here in an examination of the role of the Collection in Finnish translators' work.

The Direct Method was the outcome of a reaction against the Grammar Translation Method. It was based on the assumption that the learner of a foreign language should think directly in the target language. According to this method, English is taught through English. The learner learns the target language through discussion, conversation and reading in the second language. It does not take recourse to translation and foreign grammar.

The article deals with the volume and composition of the phraseological minimum as a necessary and effective element of the formation of linguistic and cultural competence in the process of language learning at intermediate and upper intermediate levels, outlines the quantitative and qualitative structure of the phraseological minimum for learning the Ukrainian language by Slavic students, and offers a list of phraseological units as a component of the described minimum. The material presented in the textbooks of the Ukrainian language as a foreign language was used to form the list of phraseological units, which was minimized according to the criteria of selection of the phraseological minimum for levels B1-B2.

The use of cannabis for medicinal purposes dates back well before the era of modern medicine, but in recent years research into the use of medical cannabis in the medical and pharmaceutical sciences has grown significantly. In European countries, most cannabis plants have been and still are grown for industrial purposes. For this reason, hemp cultivation technology is relatively well researched, while little is known about the key factors affecting cannabis cultivation for medical purposes. The active substances of cannabis plant targeted by this review are called phytocannabinoids. The biosynthesis of phytocannabinoids is relatively well understood, but the specific environmental factors that influence the type and number of phytocannabinoids have been much less studied. Indoor or greenhouse cultivation, which uses automated lighting, ventilation, irrigation systems and complex plant nutrition has become much more sophisticated and appears to be the most effective method for producing medical cannabis. There are many different cultivation systems for cannabis plants, but one of the essential elements of the process is an optimal plant nutrition and selection of fertilisers to achieve it. This review summarises the existing knowledge about phytocannabinoid biosynthesis and the conditions suitable for growing plants as sources of medical cannabis. This review also attempts to delineate how nutrient type and bioavailability influences the synthesis and accumulation of specific phytocannabinoids based on contemporary knowledge of the topic.

In the system of foreign language education in Kazakhstan,English is a priority at all levels of education. English is the language which is chosen by parents as a foreign for their children in preschool age. This article is devoted to the study of the status and current issues of teaching English in Kazakhstan. It is based on the results of a practical survey of eighth grade students of some secondary schools, as well as on observation of the educational process. During a visit to English classes and after conversations with school teachers, the problematic aspects of the learning process were identified. The article provides an overview of modern methods and principles of classes’ organization, contains recommendations for solving theidentified problems. The authors of the article also tried to find out the desire of students to learn not only English, but also other foreign languages, because according to the state regulatory documents, students at school have the right to choose a foreign language, which they want tolearn. The desire to communicate in a foreign language, readiness for foreign language communication, the role ofEnglish language in the student’s life, the main activities in foreign language lessons were some of the key issues, that were considered in this scientific work.

Purpose The exact criteria used by state governors for choosing opportunity zones (OZs) are not publicly available. This paper aims to examine whether state governors selected the most distressed communities, or those with the highest proportions of minorities, as OZs. Design/methodology/approach This paper compares the distressed communities chosen as OZs in states throughout the country to an equal number of those eligible distressed communities but not selected. Moreover, this paper uses regression analysis to determine whether the poverty rate, median family income, population, percentage of population that is minority and the percentage of population that is African American are significant explanatory factors in the choice of OZs. Findings After describing the tax incentives for investing in OZs, this paper documents that governors did not select many of the most distressed communities, or those with high proportions of minorities, in their individual states. Originality/value This paper describes in some detail the way in which investors may generate tax benefits by investing in eligible property or businesses in OZs. It also examines the extent to which the degree of poverty and the percentage of the population that is minority (and African American) were key factors in the selection of OZs. It arises an issue that the chosen communities are not necessarily those most in need of more investment or those heavily populated by minorities, particularly African Americans.

The article focuses on the presentation of the Hungarian-Bulgarian valence dictionary, which is currently in preparation, against the background of an extremely actual task – the creation of an academic English-Bulgarian dictionary, adequately reflecting the current state of vocabulary in both languages. The author substantiates the need for such a dictionary, given the lack of general and specialized Hungarian-Bulgarian dictionaries, based on the theoretical foundations and principles of modern lexicography. Outlined are the main features of the dictionary, the specificities and approaches in the work of its compilation. The selection of material and the methods of its presentation are in accordance with the practical needs of learners of Hungarian as a foreign language.

This article is devoted to teaching foreign-language reading intended for students studying at the mining specialties of the higher mining school. The authors share with their practical and theoretical experience as well as innovative ideas for the development and construction of a level classification of testing task forms, in order to use them effectively in mining. It is well known that the achievement of the goals and objectives of the curriculum as well as rational learning by mining students and their interest in acquiring and using mining knowledge depend on properly selected test tasks. The main component of communicative competence is considered to be a textual competence, under which is understood as a set of mining knowledge and skills. The selection of testing tasks is based on the methodological principle from simple to complex. Testing tasks at different text levels help to overcome the difficulties taking place in the course of decoding mining information.
