This paper is an extract from a PhD dissertation on the impacts of learning English on the self-identity of Kurdish EFL learners. Language is a distinctive feature of human being. Similarly, identity is considered as a sign humans are recognized by. So, scrutinizing the relationship between these two related components of human life is revealing. Most of the research papers in this area focus on how language is used as a tool to express someone’s identity. However, this research focuses on how the process of learning English makes possible changes, if any, in the learners’ self-identity. A Likert-questionnaire of 30 questions is given to 150 EFL learners from three main universities to understand the differences that might happen in the learners’ self-identity as a result of learning English. Finally, some conclusions are drawn based on the collected data and the references are documented.

AbstractKatsume Takizawa (1909–1984) was one of the most innovative of twentieth-century Japanese philosophical theologians. His study with Barth (1935) led him to attempt to bring together aspects of Barth's theology with concepts derived from Jodo-shin and Zen. He found in both religions a basic relationship between God and man which transcended both identity and distinction, which he expressed in Nishida's concept of the self-identity of the absolute contradiction. This relationship he called ‘Emmanuel 1’. The fulfilment of the relationship is ‘Emmanuel 2’ and is reflected for Christians in Jesus.

This article presents the problem of the presence of evil in the person of the Old Testament God in Answer to Job undertaken by the founder of analytical psychology, Carl Gustav Jung. The Swiss researcher of religion wonders in it about the sense of the relationship between Job and his Creator. The concept of Erich Neumann’s ethics is also shown, encouraging man to strive towards psychological wholeness, defined by Jung as the self – an archetype linking the human being with the dimension of Transcendence. In addition, reflection is also undertaken on the concept of mental health, which could define the condition of a person living in the spirit of the ethics of wholeness.

Apocalypse Cinema as Counterfactual PhenomenonNerijus Milerius SummaryThe article deals with the relationship of apocalypse cinema genre to the everyday. Usually cinematic images of the end of the world and the routine everyday are treated through the prism of their mutual opposition. It is argued, however, that such interpretation should be essentially modified, by taking into account the realm of the negative counterfactual possibilities of the everyday. As Anthony Giddens has put it, in the habitual flow of everyday actions, events and situations, counterfactual negative possibilities are bracketed out and blocked, since negative counterfactual world threatens the self-identity of the everyday subject. All the counterfactual possibilities, irrespective to theirlocal or global character, small misunderstandings or Armageddon, are neutralized as something that destroys the pre-established everyday order. Apocalypse cinema activates bracketed counterfactual possibilities but also creates the special mechanism to neutralize them. Procedure, which functions in the ordinary everyday automatically, is created intentionally in the apocalypse cinema. In the cinematic relationship “to see – to be seen”, a spectatoris given the privileged position that allows him/her to see, but remain unseen, not affected by the images of the global destruction.Key words: apocalypse movie, the everyday, negative counterfactual possibilities.

The article presents a theological analysis of Pope Francis’ statements on the sanctity of life with reference to familiological issues. The aim of the research undertaken is to show the value of human life resulting from the relationship between the elements that create the created reality and with God. According to Francis, holiness is closeness to God and the ‘divine space’ in which all creation exists and functions. The sanctity of »life« is shown by the Pope in the following aspects: 1) theological – as an expression of the integration of creation with God, 2) social – as the principle of existence and relations, and 3) defensive – as an imperative to defend the life of every human being. The family is presented by the Pope as a sanctuary of life, a place of sanctifying love and a school of holiness. The conclusions resulting from the theological analysis of papal statements indicate the need for a ‘familiological turn’ encompassing the space of culture and civilization of the contemporary world. Such a turn is necessary for the good of the man for whom the family is the first social circle. The sanctity of life in the familiological area is the principle that defines the sacredness of the family and the determinant of intra-family relationships that develop love.

This study aimed at investigating the underlying reasons of challenges that can cause Saudi EFL learners to have lower English performance. This study follows a qualitative method through interviewing three college students at Jouf University and one professor. The self-constructed interviews were basically targeted four items; 1) students’ related issues, 2) teachers’ related issues, 3) curricula- related issues, and 4) assessment related issues. The finding of this study have indicated that the primary challenges of Saudi EFL learners were due to their lower internal and intrinsic motivation. The conceptualized learning English as an academic course to pass, and not an actual language communication. The recommendations suggested by this study were trimmed into the following: increasing English language practice, shifting the focus from being examination- driven focus onto learning authentic communicative language.

Herder brings the entire human being into focus by tracing its connections with the natural, cultural, and historical world. The first part of the volume examines the various dimensions of Herder’s philosophical understanding of human nature through which he sought methodologically to delineate a genuinely anthropological philosophy. This includes his critique of traditional metaphysics and its revision along anthropological lines; the metaphysical, epistemological, and physiological dimensions of his theory of the soul-body relationship; his conception of aesthetics as the study of the sensuous basis of knowledge; and the relationship between the human and natural sciences. The second part then examines further aspects of this understanding of human nature and what emerges from it: the human-animal distinction; how human life evolves over space and time on the basis of a natural order; the fundamentally hermeneutic dimension to human existence; and the interrelatedness of language, history, religion, and culture.

This study identifies gaps in official discourse between recognition of the other as a nation and recognition of the other’s right to statehood within identity conflicts. Using as a case study the discourse of Israeli political leaders during three distinct periods from 1967 until the present, the study proposes analytical tools based on recognition theory to examine how the relationship between recognition of the other and constitution of the self impact recognition gaps. The study illustrates that partial recognition of the other — either affirmation of peoplehood coupled with denial of statehood or conversely affirmation of statehood coupled with denial of peoplehood — can result from an untenable view of self based on ontological dissonance. Recognition of the other is shown to be an essential aspect of self-constitution within the context of a transformation of self-identity towards an identity that frees itself of mastery over the other.

The article intends to explain the horizon of anthropological understanding starting from where one tries to express the intelligibility of the faith and of the mystic experience and its relation to the problem of human rights. It will concentrate on the elucidation of the ontological constitution of the personal being that is his intentional opening to the being’s totality and, likewise, ultimately to his opening to God. The faith is then understood as reception of the self communication of God to the human being and of his loving project for the human life and the mystic while intensified experience of the encounter with God that leads us to the understanding of the demand of the promotion of life.

This book is a genealogy of the concept of a person, as it is used in philosophy, ethics, the law, and everyday life. It asks, what is the concept of a person? How is the concept of a person distinct from the concept of a human being? How is it distinct from the concept of the self? When and why did the concept of a person come into existence? What is the relationship between moral personhood and metaphysical personhood, and how has our conception of that relationship changed over the last two millennia? The book as a whole argues for two main claims. First, the concept of a person, like other central concepts used in philosophy and everyday life, has gained its significance not through definition but through the accretion of layers of meaning over centuries. Thus, one can only fully understand the concept by learning its history. Second, the concept of a person has five main strands: persons are particulars, roles, entities with special moral significance, rational beings, and selves. Thus, to count someone or something as a person is simultaneously to describe it—as a particular, a role, a rational being, and a self—and to prescribe certain norms concerning how it may act and how others may act toward it.
