Quantitative determination of polysaccharides in <em>Ganoderma lucidum </em>fruit bodies from different sawdust cultivation substrates and their antibacterial activity was done. Thirty six samples were analyzed. Four strains of <em>Ganoderma lucidum </em>(GL01, GL02, GL03 and GL04) were cultivated on the growth substrates of three different sawdust types: birch (Bo), maple (Kl) or alder (Ol) amended with wheat bran in three different concentrations: 10, 20 and 30% (w/w). Even though the richest in polysaccharides was GL01 strain, the highest yields of the polysaccharides were determined in GL04Kl3 sample and was 112.82 mg/g of dry weight. The antibacterial activity of polysaccharides was determined in vitro using micro-dilution broth method. The panel of eight reference bacterial strains was used. All the polysaccharide samples tested showed the broad spectrum and the moderate antibacterial activity. <em>Micrococcus luteus </em>ATCC 10240 strain was the most sensitive with <em>MIC </em>(minimal inhibitory concentration) = 0.63 − 1.25 mg/mL.

This research describes the synthesis and in vitro antimicrobial activity study of a series of 2,4,6-trimethylbenzenesulfonyl hydrazones. Twenty-five hydrazones (2–26) were synthesized on the basis of condensation reaction. The in vitro bioactivity study confirmed the potential application of obtained derivatives as antimicrobial agents. Among the tested compounds, the highest activity was discovered for derivative 24, which possessed minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 7.81 to 15.62 µg/mL against Gram-positive reference bacterial strains. Synthesized benzenesulfonyl hydrazones can be applied as potential ligands for the synthesis of bioactive metal complexes.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate antimicrobial activity of bees gastrointestinal Lactobacillus spp. of against Paenibacillus larvae. Content of the intestinal tract was cultured for isolation of Lactobacillus spp. Gut homogenates were plated on de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe agar (MRS, Oxoid) plates and incubated for 48-72h at 30°C anaerobically. Then, the identification of isolates with MALDI-TOF MS Biotyper was done. The bacterial strains Lactobacillus gasseri, L. amylovorus, L. kunkeei, L. fructivorans, Paenibacillus larvae were isolated from gut content of bees. The disc diffusion method was used for the determination of antimicrobial activities of the Lactobacillus supernatant against two strains of Paenibacillus larvae. The best antimicrobial activity of Lactobacillus against Paenibacillus larvae from gut was found in L. gasseri supernatant. Lesser degree of antimicrobial activity against P. larvae was found in L. kunkeei supernatant. The strongest antibacterial activity against P. larvae CCM 4438 was found in L. gasseri and L. amylovorus and the least antibacterial activity was found in L. fructivorans.

AbstractA selected set of N1-(4-chloro-9-ethylcarbazol-3-yl)amidrazones (7a–n) has been synthesized by reacting the respective hydrazonoyl chloride 5 derived from 3-amino-9-ethylcarbazole (3), with an appropriate sec-cyclic amine (6a–n) in ethanol in the presence of triethylamine. Unexpectedly, aromatic ring chlorination occurred at C-4 of 3 during its conversion to 6 as evidenced by analytical and spectral data and further confirmed by single crystal X-ray structure determination of the amidrazone 7n. Compounds 7a–n were tested for their in vitro antibacterial activity. Among the tested bacterial strains, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was the most susceptible to 7f and Bacillus cereus to 7b both with a minimum inhibitory concentration value of 1.56 µg mL−1. Compounds 7c, 7f, and 7h could be useful as lead structures for further development of new antibacterial agents against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens.

The aim of our study was to investigate the presence and quantitative contents of lignans in the tissues of <em>Taxus</em> ×<em>media</em>. The presence of the lignans: pinoresinol, matairesinol and secoisolariciresinol was assessed in needles, shoots cultures and suspension culture. Pinoresinol was the only lignan found in the tissue of <em>T.</em> ×<em>media</em>. The total pinoresinol content in the needles and in the shoots was 1.24 mg/g dry weight (dw) and 0.69 mg/g dw, respectively. Most of the pinoresinol identified was appeared glycosidically bound. In needles, the amount of glycosidically bound pinoresinol (0.81 mg/g dw) was about twice as high as that of free pinoresinol (0.43 mg/g dw). The content of free and glycosidically bound pinoresinol showed the level of 0.18 mg/g dw and 0.51 mg/g dw, respectively in the in vitro shoot cultures. In the cell culture, no pinoresinol was found.

The purpose of the present work aimed at exploring the potential biochemical components and biological activities of an organic extract of the white truffle Tirmania nivea collected from the Iraqi desert, then test the organic extract against the Cytotoxicity on Human Larynx carcinoma cells and selected strains of pathogenic bacteria. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry GC/MSS were used to analyze mycochemical compositions. The antibacterial activity and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) was investigated using a disk diffusion agar method. The truffle extract's cytotoxicity effect against the larynx cell line (Hep-2) was assessed by the MTT assay (in vitro). FTIR results provided the presence of phenol, carboxylic acid, and alkane's functional group, The GC-MS analysis of T. nivea disclose the existence of nineteen compounds that can contribute to the pharmaceutical properties of the truffle. As for antibacterial activity result, A growth inhibition activity of truffle extract at (18-40 mm inhibition zones) against the tested pathogenic bacterial strains was detected, which minimum inhibitory concentration values ranged from 3.12 to 6.25 mg/mL for Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) Respectively. The results of cytotoxicity shown that the organic truffle extract exhibited a high inhibitory rate (52.685%) against cell line (Hep-2) at a concentration of 1.56 ?g/mL. In this work, the results showed that the organic extracts of T. nivea are very promising as cancer cytotoxicity and antibacterial agent for future medical applications.

Abstract Acinetobacter baumannii is one of the most challenging pathogens, on account of its predisposition to develop resistance leading to severe, difficult-to-treat infections. As these bacteria are more usually isolated from nosocomial infections, the new therapeutic options are demanded. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are compounds likely to find application in the treatment of A. baumannii. These compounds exhibit a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity and were found to be effective against biofilm. In this study, eight AMPs, namely aurein 1.2, CAMEL, citropin 1.1., LL-37, omiganan, r-omiganan, pexiganan, and temporin A, were tested for their antimicrobial activity. A reference strain of A. baumannii ATCC 19606 was used. Antimicrobial assays included determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration and the minimum biofilm eradication concentration. Considering the fact that the majority of A. baumannii infections are associated with mechanical ventilation and the use of indwelling devices, the activity against biofilm was assessed on both a polystyrene surface and tracheal tube fragments. In addition, cytotoxicity (HaCaT) was determined and in vitro selectivity index was calculated.

<p><strong>Objective:</strong> The aim of the current study was to isolate and identify the bacteriocinogenic strain exhibiting broad range antimicrobial activity and antibiofilm activity from soil of animal farms.</p><p><strong>Methods:</strong> In the current study, bacterial strains were isolated from soil of twelve different regions of animal farm all over India and screened for antimicrobial activity against<em> Staphylococcus epidermidis</em>, <em>Micrococcus luteus, Pseudomonas fluorescence</em> and <em>Escherichia coli.</em> Antibiofilm ability of these selected strains was checked on preformed biofilm of <em>S. epidermidis </em>and in addition biofilm disruption potential was also determined. The potent bacterial strain was identified at molecular level by 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequencing.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>Results: </strong>30 out of<strong> </strong>231 strains isolated from soil were selected on the basis of antibacterial activity against <em>S. epidermidis.</em> One potential candidate (GAS 101) exhibited ≥99% inhibition against <em>S. epidermidis</em>, <em>M. luteus, P. fluorescence</em> and <em>E. coli</em> and also showed antibiofilm activity. GAS 101 16S rDNA sequencing data identified it as <em>Bacillus subtilis.</em> The sequence of <em>B. subtilis </em>was submitted to genbank under accession no. KJ564301.</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> <em>B. subtilis</em> GAS 101 isolated from soil of animal farm showed the antibacterial activity against all indicator organisms and also displayed antibiofilm activity against preformed biofilm and inhibited biofilm formation of <em>S. epidermidis</em>.</p>

The work is devoted to predicting and studying biological properties of N-substituted analogs of 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-thiadiazole, which, in their turn, include in the composition of many drugs that exhibit a wide range of pharmacological actions. For searching of new alternative drugs with an antibacterial activity, but lacking resistance of microorganism strains to them, a computer screening of 2N-alkyl-substituted 5-amino-3-imino-1,2,4-thiadiazolines previously synthesized by us was carried out. The prediction of the spectrum of biological activity, as well as the determination of the probable toxicity of these compounds, was performed using the freely available computer programs PASS, Anti-Bac-Pred, and GUSAR. The study of the antibacterial activity in vitro against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Staphylococcus epidermidis) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosae) bacterial strains was performed by the disco-diffusion method. Experimental data roughly correspond to the predictions.

Hospital Infection is a major health problem and affects around 1.5 million people annually around the world. The Amazon region has a wide diversity of native palm trees that have fruits and oilseeds. Astrocaryum vulgare, commonly known as Tucumã in Brazil, belongs to the family Arecaceae. This palm has orange, fleshy, single-egg-shaped fruits that are used for therapeutic purposes in diseases of the eyes and skin due to the high content of carotenoids, oil is used in cooking, health treatment and massage. This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of the Tucumã oil against 18 microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity of Tucumã was measured through the determination of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), as well as the determination of the Minimum Microbicidal Concentration (CMM) aiming to contribute to the discovery of new antimicrobials against pathogenic microorganisms’ human health and may contribute to the treatment of nosocomial infections. The results showed that the oil of Tucumã presented antimicrobial activity against five important bacteria, four Gram - positive bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus agalactiae) and one Gram - negative (Acinetobacter baumannii).

Background: To determine the charantin content, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in-vitro of the bitter melon (Momordica charantia) in Thua Thien Hue.); Materials and Methods: bitter melon fruit was collected in Thua Thien Hue province, then taken to the laboratory for extraction, quantitation and activity test. Results: charantin content of bitter melon in Thua Thien Hue extracted with a solvent mixture of MeOH - CHCl3 (1:1 v/v) was found to be 0.204 %; antioxidant activity of FRAP content of fresh bitter melon extracted with solvent methanol was found to be 972.16 μmol Fe2+/L; the samples exhibited the antibacterial activity for four strains of bacterial pathogens with antimicrobial diameters from 14-17 mm. Conclusion: the charantin content of bitter melon fruit in Thua Thien Hue is high, the antioxidant and antibacterial activity are medium levels.
