The publication includes theoretical pondering concerning internal motivation for work and a discussion of own research results showing the relationship between the socio‑demographic characteristics of the individual (gender, age, place of residence, education, occupation and seniority) and selected factors that determine internal motivation for work. Among the aforementioned motivational factors were included: responsibility, self‑reliance, development, respect and decision‑making. The research was based on questionnaire techniques, and the research tool was a survey questionnaire. The results of the study were processed using the Excel and Statistica program. The research conclusions are presented in the empirical part of the work.

We use big data methods to investigate how decision-making might depend on future sightedness (that is, on how far into the future people’s thoughts about the future extend). In study 1, we establish a link between future thinking and decision-making at the population level in showing that US states with citizens having relatively far future sightedness, as reflected in their tweets, take fewer risks than citizens in states having relatively near future sightedness. In study 2, we analyze people’s tweets to confirm a connection between future sightedness and decision-making at the individual level in showing that people with long future sightedness are more likely to choose larger future rewards over smaller immediate rewards. In study 3, we show that risk taking decreases with increases in future sightedness as reflected in people’s tweets. The ability of future sightedness to predict decisions suggests that future sightedness is a relatively stable cognitive characteristic. This implication was supported in an analysis of tweets by over 38,000 people that showed that future sightedness has both state and trait characteristics (study 4). In study 5, we provide evidence for a potential mechanism by which future sightedness can affect decisions in showing that far future sightedness can make the future seem more connected to the present, as reflected in how people refer to the present, past, and future in their tweets over the course of several minutes. Our studies show how big data methods can be applied to naturalistic data to reveal underlying psychological properties and processes.

A group of individuals faces the choice of an alternative out of a set of alternatives. Each member of the group holds an opinion regarding the most suitable (best) alternative for which he or she votes. In this setting, the individual votes are based on their decisional competencies, which hinge on the information to which they are exposed and on their ability to make use of that information. The main question is how to translate the group members’ voting profile to a single collective choice. This chapter studies different aspects of this question in the context of binary voting where the group faces only two alternatives. The selection of an appropriate aggregation rule is a central issue in the fields of social choice, public choice, voting theory, and collective decision making. Since the votes are based on the individual competencies, the applied aggregation rule should take into account not only the voting profile but also the competency profile. In fact, it should also take into consideration any other relevant environmental information such as the asymmetry between the feasible alternatives, the dependence between individual votes, decision-making costs, and the available past record of the voters’ decisions. The chapter focuses on the clarification of the relationship between the performance of binary aggregation rules and the relevant variables and parameters. This has direct normative implications regarding the desirable mode of collective decision making and, in particular, regarding the desirable aggregation rule and the size and the composition of the decision-making body.

This study examines the relationships between top management demographics, rational decision making (RDM), munificence, and firm performance. We expect top management demographics to influence rational decision making, and rational decision making to influence firm performance. In addition, we hypothesize a moderating effect of environmental munificence on the rational decision making-firm performance relationship. To test these hypotheses, we conducted a survey that measured RDM. Top management demographic characteristics, environmental munificence, and firm performance were collected from archival sources. We examined the relationships between RDM and top management age, tenure, and education level, using regression analyses. The results of this study provide support for the assertion that top management demographic characteristics influence decision making, and for the role of environmental munificence as a moderator in the relationship between decision making and organizational performance.

The success of merit systems is closely linked to the establishment of key expectations in the minds of employees concerning the relationship between pay and performance. Results of a national survey suggest that different expectations are being formed in the public versus the private sectors. The role organizational climate plays in this finding and in the individual employee's decision making process regarding effort expended at work is modeled and discussed. Suggestions for fostering merit success are also addressed.

Using all delinquency referrals in a Northeast state, the current study examined how youth charged with retail offenses differed from other offense types across multiple juvenile court outcomes (i.e., petition, adjudication, and disposition). The individual and joint effects of a juvenile’s sex and race/ethnicity were also investigated to determine whether these extralegal factors conditioned the relationship between offense type and juvenile system processing. Findings indicate that at each decision-making stage, retail offenders were significantly more likely to be treated with leniency compared to other offense types. The results also reinforced the continued impact of sex and race/ethnicity on shaping judicial outcomes at each stage. Implications regarding the processing of juvenile retail offenders and the influence of juvenile characteristics on juvenile court decision-making are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between the factors influencing investors sentiment and investment decision-making (DM) of the individual investors. This paper proposes a unique conceptual framework that incorporates the herding, market and awareness factors that are leading to investor sentiment (IS) and decision-making process of the individual investors. Design/methodology/approach This study has conducted a questionnaire-based survey to collect data from 875 individual investors through the convenience sampling method. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the relationship between factors, namely, market effect, herd behavior, media, social interaction and advocate recommendation that influences IS and DM. Findings The present study found that market effect and herding are the most significantly influencing factors of investors sentiment. Among the sources of awareness, the internet has the lowest influence when compared to media, social interaction and advocate recommendation. Practical implications This study will help individual investors to avoid the problems faced while making an investment decision. The study could help investors to select a suitable investment aid and avoid repeating expensive errors, which arise due to investors’ sentiment. It is recommended to increase the awareness regarding investors’ sentiment among individuals, so as to increase their understanding about the financial settings and to make them confident while investing. The present study also sheds light upon the behavior of Indian individual investors so that policymakers can take appropriate measures to provide the proper guidance. Policymakers can conduct awareness campaigns to increase investors’ knowledge on the market condition and to enhance proper investment DM among them. Originality/value To best of the authors’ knowledge, previous studies have focused on limited factors at a time. The present study has investigated how factors influencing investors sentiment, namely, market factors (MF), herding as well as awareness would influence investment DM among individual investors in India. The influence of these factors has never been studied simultaneously in the context of Indian individual investors’ DM.

The board of directors is a group of people whose decision making can affect company life. In particular, the decision to have more liabilities than equity capital, makes a firm more aggressive than others in the market. The aim of this paper is to test the relationship between some demographic characteristics of directors and the firm’s propensity to risk. In particular our analysis consider gender, age of the directors, independence and educational level. Moreover work experiences are considered. The results obtained should be considered by regulators and firm statutes as guidelines for future board composition.

The authors argue that closer attention should be paid to the interorganizational rules of decision making and their implications for intraorganizational processes. They claim that exogenous changes in macro-institutional rules, which result in a move from formal and sequential to informal and simultaneous interaction between collective actors, will lead to changes in individual actors’ respective influence over outcomes within organizations. Certain individuals controlling information flows between organizations will see an increase in their power over legislative outcomes. This begs the question of how organizations will respond to these shifts in the power balance among the individual actors that constitute them. The authors argue that collective actors that centralize coordination over dealings with external actors will respond effectively through internal rule change. In contrast, collective actors with multiple, ill-coordinated links to other organizations will find it difficult to change internal rules. The authors empirically explore the general argument by analyzing the relationship between the Council and the European Parliament in the process of codecision and its implications for intraorganizational processes.

This study examines factors in decision making of tourist to revisit Kelapa Dua Island, Thousand Islands, DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. The objectives of this study were: (1) To know the socio-demographic characteristics of the visitors in order to understand the relationship on their decision making to revisit the island, (2) To know the preferred activity preference attributes of the visitors in order to understand the relationship on their decision making to revisit the island, (3) To know the specific role of beach settings / attributes in the visitors’ view in order to understand the relationship on their decision making to revisit the island, and (4) To define the expected desired experiences of the visitors in order to understand the relationship on their decision making to revisit the island. The data collection used was primary data, taken by spreading questionnaire to 100 visitors on the exit gate of Kelapa Dua Island, DKI Jakarta, Indonesia. An accidental sampling was used to select the respondent surveyed for this study.  Sampling will be rotated on different days of the week and between morning, afternoon, and evening in attempts to acquire a more accurate and representative population.

Background: The association between substance use and suicide is well-established, but evidence is scant regarding the relationship between the number, type, and level of substances and other risk factors in completed suicide across the lifespan. Aims: To examine the relationship between social/demographic characteristics and the number, type, and level of drugs present in an unrestricted age sample of completed suicides in Australia. Method: An analysis was undertaken of 893 substance-related suicides using data from the Government Statistician's Office for the years 1989-1992. Results: The number and type of substances present in suicide victims was related to the individuals' gender, age, marital status, employment status, and method of suicide. Blood alcohol level was significantly different between the methods of suicide, but was unrelated to demographic characteristics of the individual. The level of antidepressants and minor tranquilizers in the individuals was also unrelated to demographic characteristics. Conclusion: Examination of the type and number of substances present in completed suicides is an important component in creating profiles of potential suicide victims.
