The Media Machine

This chapter examines one of the largest interventions in computer-based learning currently underway, the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) project. Started in 2005 by people from the MIT Media Lab, this project distributed more than 2.5 million laptops worldwide, over 80 percent of them in Latin America. Drawing on 2010 and 2013 fieldwork investigating a project in Paraguay with 10,000 of OLPC’s “XO” laptops, the chapter explores the ways in which the children who were meant to be the primary beneficiaries interpreted leisure laptop use as “learning.” It also shows that the most captivating uses of the laptops were not “productive” or programming-centric, as OLPC’s developers hoped, but “consumptive” and media-centric, focused on music, videos, and video games. It discusses the learning benefits and drawbacks of this use, as understood by participants and in light of education research, and in light of the broader context of transnational corporations interested in marketing to these children. In the process, it weighs OLPC’s utopian dreams against the interests of the child beneficiaries, concerns of media imperialism, and a potential shift in the meaning of computers.

This research aimed to analyze the types of media and the characteristics of physics materials that are suitable for use in the development of physics learning media, using Adobe Flash software. The research uses a meta-analysis method, which is a method for analyzing many of the research that has been done. This research uses secondary data obtained from previous research in the form of journals related to the media using Adobe Flash software for senior high school physics subjects. The journals examined in this research consisted of 20 research articles that developed an adobe flash-based interactive learning media for physics learning in senior high schools. The number of articles reviewed consisted of 3 articles from international journals and 17 articles from national journals. Based on the results of the analysis that has been done, found 13 physics materials obtained from 20 journals analyzed, where the concepts of temperature, heat, and transfer are the most widely used material as content in the development of physics learning media based on Adobe Flash software. While the type of media that is widely used in computer-based learning media.

OLPC, the One Laptop Per Child initiative, was accepted by just a few countries, including Peru. The largest acquisition of computers has produced a fairly low impact in education and is now being quietly phased-out. Peru's government decision to adopt the computers, back in 2007, was not contested or questioned by the political class, the media or even teachers, with just a rather small number of specialists arguing against it. This chapters discussed the political and argumentative processes that brought OLPC into the public sphere, through the use of a specific narrative, that of hackerism, i.e., the hacker attitude towards computers, and how social and political validation resulted in adoption. An assessment of the process of framing OLPC as a hacker product and the perils of such reasoning lead to discuss the need for a counter-narrative about the role of computers in society.

ABSTRACT: Teachers in delivering materials need intermediate tools to make the delivery of material easier and more targeted. The way is by using the learning media. One of the learning media that can be used by teachers in learning is computer-based media. The purpose of this study is to determine the ability and knowledge of teachers in applying computer-based learning media, constraints and efforts undertaken by teachers in applying the media. The type of this research is descriptive r esearch with qualitative approach. This research was conducted in SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang with the subject of research class III to class V which amounted to 3 people. Then the technique of data collection using observation, interview, documentation, and questionnaire. The results of this study describes teachers have been able to apply computer-based media. Teachers are skilled in utilizing technological means and developing material into an interesting computer -based media product, and easy to apply in learning. There is no significant obstacle for teachers in implementing computer-based learning. Efforts by teachers that is by self-development through training and utilization of facilities and infrastructure already provided by the school intelligently.Keywords: Computer Based Media, Learning, Integrated ThematicABSTRAK: Guru dalam menyampaikan materi memerlukan alat bantu perantara agar proses penyampaian materi lebih mudah dan tepat sasaran. Adapun cara tersebut yaitu dengan menggunakan media pembelajaran. Salah satu media pembelajaran yang dapat digunakan guru dalam pembelajaran yaitu media berbasis komputer. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengetahui kemampuan dan pengetahuan guru dalam menerapkan media pembelajaran berbasis komputer, kendala dan upaya yang dilakukan guru dalam menerapkan media tersebut. Jenis penelit ian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SD Muhammadiyah 9 Malang dengan subjek penelitian guru kelas III sampai dengan kelas V yang berjumlah 3 orang. Kemudian teknik pengumpulan datanya dengan menggunakan observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi, dan kuesioner. Hasil penelitian ini menggambarkan guru-guru sudah mampu menerapkan media berbasis komputer. Guru sudah terampil dalam memanfaatkan sarana teknologi dan mengembangkan materi menjadi produk media berbasis komputer yang menarik, dan mudah diaplikasikan dalam pembelajaran. Tidak ada hambatan yang berarti bagi guru dalam menerapkan pembelajaran berbasis komputer. Upaya yang dilakukan guru yaitu dengan pengembangan diri melalui pelatihan dan pemanfaatan sarana dan prasarana teknogi yang sudah disediakan oleh sekolah secara cerdas.Kata kunci: Media Berbasis Komputer, Pembelajaran, Tematik terpadu

Media products are developed based the steps of the 4-D development model. The results of validation and trials that have been done, obtained data (a) the results of media validation reached a percentage of 82.5% with very valid criteria; (b) the results of the media attractiveness test reached a percentage of 95.56% with very interesting criteria; (c) the practicality test results of students and teachers reached a percentage of 94.8% with very practical criteria; (d) the results of the effectiveness test that learning outcomes increased by compare the pre-test and post-test results.</pre><pre><strong>Abstrak:</strong><em> </em>Penelitian pengembangan bertujuan untuk menghasilkan media interaktif <em>Computer Assisted Instruction</em> tema “Pahlawanku” subtema“Pahlawanku Kebangganku” materi IPS kelas IV SD yang valid, menarik, efektif, dan praktis. Media pembelajaran berbasis komputer dapat dijadikan alternatif dalam proses pembelajaran. Produk media dikembangkan berdasarkan langkah model pengembangan 4-D. Hasil validasi dan uji coba yang telah dilakukan, diperoleh data (a) hasil validasi media mencapai persentase 82,5% dengan kriteria sangat valid; (b) hasil uji kemenarikan media mencapai persentase 95,56% dengan kriteria sangat menarik; (c) hasil uji kepraktisan siswa dan guru mencapai persentase 94,8% dengan kriteria sangat praktis; (d) hasil uji efektivitas bahwa hasil belajar lebih optimal dengan membandingkan hasil <em>pre</em><em>-</em><em>test</em> dan <em>post</em><em>-</em><em>test</em>.</pre></td></tr></tbody></table></div>

<em>The purpose of this study is determine the effect of computer based on the learning of media Paint application forward the cognitive abilities of children A2 TK Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal 22 Balongpanggang Gresik. Media of learning is everything that is used by teacher to simplify the delivery of learning materials. The media is computer-based learning which has paint application that is used to stimulate the cognitive abilities of children, especially in aspects of learning and problem solving, logical thinking, and symbolic thinking. This research uses quantitative approach that is experimental method with Pre-experimental design research design type one-group pre-test post-test. The subject of this study is a group A children in kindergarten AisyiyahBustanulAthfal 22 Balongpanggang Gresik as many as 11 children. Techniques of collecting data of ths research is participant observation and documentation in the form of photos of activities and plans of daily learning. Data processing uses t-test data analysis. The result of data analysis obtained by Tcount value is -5,45 and Ttable value 2,086 then </em> <em> (-2,086&gt; -5,45) and Ha accepted. Based on the data analysis shows there is a significant influence between computer-based learning media paint application to the cognitive abilities of children.</em>

This study aims to produce computer-based learning media with a scientific approach to probability material. The development model used is the 4D model which consists of the stages of define, design, develop, and disseminate. The instrument used was a validity instrument in the form of a validation sheet and a practicality instrument in the form of a student response questionnaire. The data collection techniques used were validation sheets and student response questionnaires. The data analysis technique used in this research is quantitative data analysis and qualitative data analysis. Validation is carried out by four validators who are experts in their fields. A limited trial was conducted on 16 students of SMP Mutiara Harapan Pangkalan Kerinci. Students are divided into two groups, consisting of students with high, medium, and low abilities. Each group tries two learning media. From the results of data processing, it was found that the average validation of learning media on the media aspect was 3.47 with very valid criteria and the material aspect was 3.53 with very valid criteria. This means that all aspects of the device in the learning media developed are related consistently. While the average percentage obtained from the student response questionnaire in the limited trial was 90.59% with very practical criteria. This means that the learning media developed can be used in learning activities. It can be concluded that the learning media developed are valid and practical.

The background of this research is the use of unvaried learning resources causes tired and bored students in following the lecture. Boredom experienced make the students difficult to think creatively, so that they only work based on the example problems and discussion of the lecturer given. To solve the problems, one of the media that can be used is a computer-based learning media. This research aims to see the effectiveness of student learning media towards the attitudes of students in the subject of Space Geometry. Type of research is a developmental research. This research developed a  computer-based learning media on the subject of space geometry. Model of development used on this research is a model of instructional Development Institute (IDI). IDI applies the principles of systems approach. There are three stages of a systems approach, namely the discovery (define) or a needs analysis, development (develop), and evaluation (Evaluate). The instrument used in this research was a questionnaire of attitude. Computer-based instructional media on the lecture of Space Geometry has a positive attitude towards students. It is found from the results of the questionnaire that student attitudes toward computer-based learning media are  interested and very interested in computer-based learning media. This is pictured out by the results of percentage ranging between 66% - 89%. Based on the previous explanation, it can be concluded that the use of computer-based learning media has a positive influence, so that it can be used as a medium of learning in the subject of Space Geometry.

Zusammenfassung. Der vorliegende Beitrag entwickelt auf der Basis von pädagogischen Überlegungen und lernpsychologischen Forschungsergebnissen zur computerunterstützten Wissensvermittlung eine Konzeptualisierung von E-Learning-Systemen und deren von konsequentem Qualitätsmanagement begleitete Umsetzung. Die vorgestellte theoriegeleitete Vorgehensweise wird anhand der Entwicklung und Realisierung des internetgestützten Lernsystems “CLIC Computer-based Learning: Introduction to Communications“ veranschaulicht, das an der Universität Erfurt erarbeitet wird. Der Aufsatz befasst sich sowohl mit der Koordination auf der Ebene der Produktion (Didaktik, Inhalt, Technik) als auch auf der Ebene der Rezeption (Lern- und Kommunikationsformen, Lernorganisation). Die explorativ angelegte Evaluation des ersten Einsatzes von CLIC belegt ein weitgehend gelungenes Konzept und Qualitätsmanagement. Vorgestellt werden ausgewählte Evaluationsergebnisse zur Koordination und Organisation der Wissensvermittlung sowie des sozialen Kontaktes zwischen Studierenden und Dozierenden. Anhand von drei in der Evaluation empirisch ermittelten E-Learning-Typen werden Probleme und Potenziale beim E-Learning aufgezeigt und Schlussfolgerungen für die koordinierende Gestaltung von E-Learning-Systemen gezogen.
