Achieving sustainability is the ultimate goal-oriented challenge. Control science can be applied to all goal-oriented tasks. Accordingly, utilizing control science, we have been progressing in research on sustainability and sustainable design. Here this chapter illustrates the methodology for designing sustainable structures with two examples. In this context, “structures” include various city components, such as buildings, roads, and parks, as well as the whole city. First, this chapter illustrates the control system for promoting sustainable structure design. Next, it shows the process of producing and revising sustainable structure design guidelines. Based on this process, Section 4 demonstrates how to produce and revise sustainable housing design guidelines, with the completed guidelines’ extracts. Moreover, Section 5 outlines a way of producing sustainable urban design guidelines. Designing the whole city needs extensive spatial planning; therefore, the guidelines consist of three parts: (1) development allowable areas, (2) spatial relationships among city components, (3) principles of designing city components. This methodology’s characteristics include visualization of the whole picture for promoting sustainable design, user-friendliness, comprehensiveness, and adaptability to different and changing situations.

Current housing design faces various environmental, social, and economic issues, such as climate change, aging population, and workplace needs. Dealing with such issues and pursuing sustainability is a target-oriented challenge. The science of system control can be utilized for all target-oriented tasks. Therefore, applying system control, we have been developing methods for sustainable design. Based on our finished research and practice results, this chapter shows how to design sustainable homes. Section 2 briefly illustrates the methods with two figures: (1) the control system for promoting sustainable housing design, (2) the process of producing and revising sustainable housing design guidelines. Section 3 demonstrates a concrete process of creating sustainable design guidelines. First, it identifies global and general problems related to current homes and specifies requirements for sustainable housing design. Next, it converts these requirements into a tabular form of “housing elements, variables, and their desired values.” The completed table has turned out compact “sustainable housing design guidelines” for general use. The methods have four significant features: (1) total visualization for promoting sustainable design, (2) user-friendliness, (3) comprehensiveness, (4) flexibility toward optimization.

To explore the design pattern and guidelines for the forms displayed on the interfaces, we studied the factors of form design from the perspective of ergonomics. These factors include orientation (horizontal, vertical), color grouping and color combination. In combination with the analysis and conclusion of the experimental data, we proposed some design guidelines for human-computer interface that has many forms, such as weapon command and control system. A visual searching program was designed to simulate the display interface. Reaction time and accuracy are recorded by orthogonal experiment. Analyses such as double factor variance analysis, simple main effect are conducted on the experimental data. The following conclusions are obtained: two-color form has a faster reaction time than single color form; reaction time of the horizontal form is shorter than the vertical form. Color combination has significant influence on accuracy, and the blue-green is suiTable for form design; color grouping has significant influence on reaction time and accuracy; the interaction of color grouping and color combination shows significant differences. When designing forms in display interface, we should choose the horizontal layout with sparse coloring density as much as possible, and the effect of color combination on the recognition efficiency should be considered.

Abstract In existing ethanol factories across Southern Africa, the optimization of bagasse flow reclamation is of critical importance to optimum performance of ethanol factories. One of the key strategies in optimization is the addition of a recirculation system to the current bagasse conveying system, which feeds a 120 t/h steam-generating boiler. The focus of this paper is to propose the use of a mechanical diverting chute, which will integrate into the upgraded bagasse conveying system. The chute will enable automated variable flow control of bagasse, through the existing distributed control system, between the recirculation conveyors and discharge to ground for stock piling. The variation in flow will be controlled by monitoring the feed rate of sugar cane, measured by a belt scale, to the crushing mills. The purpose of this upgraded system is to reduce the required operating hours of a front-end loader, which currently performs the recirculating function, but also allows surplus bagasse to be stock piled for future use in the factory outside of the crushing season.

In the feedback control robotic systems, the repetitive control method has a high control performance for the track or elimination of the periodic signals. The promotion of the plug-in type configuration of the controller broadens the application range and applicability of the control method. In this article, a novel design algorithm based on the steady-state residual convergence ratio of the repetitive control system is proposed to improve the performance of the stabilized platform to resist the periodic perturbation. The basic structure and stable condition of the plug-in type repetitive control method are first introduced by applying the small gain theorem and the stability theorem for time-lag systems. Then the analysis of the convergence rate is utilized in constructing the basic index of the design algorithm of a plug-in type repetitive control system based on a steady-state residual convergence ratio. The parameters of the designed controller are checked by the validity condition of the plug-in type repetitive control system, and a simulation example is given to verify the effectiveness of the design algorithm. The article provides basic design guidelines and schemes for the design of the periodic disturbance suppression performance of the feedback control system. In the final physical prototype experiment, the prospective steady-state residual convergence ratio is basically achieved within the allowable range of error.

The School of Mechanical, Industrial, and Manufacturing Engineering at Oregon State University is home to one of the largest academic Mechanical Design groups in the country. As a leader in undergraduate design education, we have been able to keep in touch with a large group of mechanical design graduates, and as such are capable of assessing how students retain information learned in undergraduate coursework to see how this understanding is employed in real-world engineering practice. However, the principles governing the design of sustainable products and processes are relatively novel and are only now being integrated into the undergraduate and graduate mechanical design curriculum. It is our hypothesis that particular means of learning and understanding sustainable design — via lectures, homework assignments, design projects, and the use of various sustainability-related LCA tools — will enable the highest retention of sustainable design understanding, and a higher likelihood that this sustainable design knowledge will be propagated into design practice in industry. Multiple curricular studies that explore dissemination and retention of sustainable design skills are being explored, including a junior-level introductory mechanical design course and a graduate level sustainable product development course. In the junior-level course, baseline sustainability knowledge is tested by allowing students to make sustainable design decisions by applying varied skill sets, including general principles, a list of sustainable design guidelines, and an innovative online survey (The GREEn Quiz). The graduate-level course, which employs sustainable design principles within a larger product development architecture, will capitalize on more “expert” knowledge. Future work will also be discussed, including planned validation studies and curriculum improvements, as well as the means of quantifying the retention of sustainable design information.

To solve the writing and reading operation conflict to RAM in LED/LCD display control system, a new RAM operation conflict arbiter IC was proposed. Comparing the traditional dual ports RAM, the IC has the advantages of low-cost and high stability. By analyzing the working principle and structure design, the IC was designed in pure digital way with Verilog HDL, and passed the simulation verify. Finally the IC was realized by Alter FPGA chip and passed the actual test.
