At a key moment when education systems are moving towards the development of 21st-century skills at school, we propose to develop them with a series of enquiry activities connected to the real world on the subject of Chemistry in Compulsory Secondary Education. The four selected topics have practical aspects, as they are related to industrial chemistry, and are proposed in educational practice using the 5E model. The results obtained in a pilot test with 22 students show that the context created facilitates the development of 21st century competences. It is understood that this novel proposal can be successfully employed in other contexts.

All who are interested in educational matters cannot fail to be conscious of the widespread spirit of unrest that is abroad. The energy of this association and other similar bodies is proof enough of the increased interest in the efforts that are being made to examine and recast, in the light of modern work, the existing forms of secondary education, and to grapple with the new problems created by a changing system of external forces. Criticism within this sphere is as healthy as it is inevitable, just because it secures a careful scrutiny of the grounds for proposed alterations; and it should serve as a safeguard against fantastic and ill-considered developments of methods and ideas that under proper limitations may be both serviceable and stimulating. Any proposal to introduce a new variety of an old subject, and still more an apparently fresh theme, into the curriculum can only lead to beneficial results if a thorough investigation of the principles involved and the purpose in view has first led to a discrimination between the essential and non-essential, the useful and undesirable, elements of the subject.

Learning is entering the discourse of a community of knowledgeable peers. However, in Dutch secondary education student discourse during autonomous working does not reflect the discourse of the community of the subject, but it reflects the discourse of the community of the school: the discourse of how to be a good student. Because both the teacher's verbal behavior and the formulation of the task strongly focus on procedural aspects like how to proceed in completing the task correctly, students mainly interact about the procedure of the task. They even perceive correct completion of higher importance than understanding the content of the task. And although students interact much more about the task during seatwork than both teachers and students had expected and they often know how to solve a task, they do not know why their answer is correct. Students are working very hard doing it wrong to do it right.

Nowadays, education requires changes in the teaching and learning processes, through the implementation of innovative and motivating pedagogical actions, owing to the existing needs in society. Education, owing to the current needs of society, requires changes in the teaching and learning processes through the implementation of innovative and motivating pedagogical actions. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the collaborative method, based on the Harry Potter theme, with respect to the traditional method in the first year of Obligatory Secondary Education for the learning of geometric figures in the subject of mathematics. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental, quantitative, descriptive, and correlational study has been designed, using a standardized questionnaire as a technique to collect information. The sample is composed of 236 students from the first year of Obligatory Secondary Education distributed in eight groups (four control and four experimental) from a public high school in the city of Cádiz (Spain). The tests carried out show that collaborative learning generates improvements in the attitudes and mathematical dimensions. Therefore, the collaborative method, developed by means of the Harry Potter theme for students in the first year of Compulsory Secondary Education in the subject of mathematics, causes a better attitude of the student towards the teaching and learning process. Furthermore, it facilitates the acquisition of mathematical contents related to geometry, which does not directly affect the students’ grades because, although those of the experimental group are better than those obtained by the control group, the differences between the two are minimal.

In this paper we consider how corpora may be of use in the teaching of grammar of the pre-tertiary level. Corpora are becoming well established in teaching in Universities. Corpora also have a role to play in secondary education, in that they can help decide how and what to teach, as well as changing the way in which puplis learn and providing the possibility of open-ended machine-aided tuition. Corpora also seem to provide what UK goverment sponsored reports on teaching grammar have called for – a data-driven approach to the subject.

The article examines the problem of functioning of pedagogical classes in modern educational practice through in historical perspective in the context of the history of the development of pedagogical education in Russia. The author aims to scientifically justify pedagogical classes as socio-cultural and socio-economic phenomena in historical perspective. The state of Slovak education is influenced by several negative factors. In terms of human capital, we have seen the decline of pupils for demographic reasons and lack of interest in the work of teachers. This paper aims to evaluate the efficiency of secondary education on the example of selected secondary schools. The main method of the paper is multicriteria analysis. The subject of research is the efficiency of selected secondary schools. The 10 Business Academies attended by pupils aged 15-19 years and established in the Banská Bystrica and Žilina self-governing regions will be the subject of research. For the analysis we use panel data collected for the school years 2013/2014 - 2017/2018. The contribution of the paper is to create an evaluation of the efficiency of the surveyed schools and to propose solutions for schools that achieved below-average results. The findings may serve as a basis for assessing the efficiency of the Business Academies for comparison with competitors, as well as for the founders of these secondary schools.

In the current time, one of the important tasks of modern schools is to prepare a highly educated student who can think creatively and independently in any situation. In the realization of this task, literature, as a school discipline, which forms the inner world and valuable orientations of students, plays a large role. The study of literature can have crucial importance in the education of the independent personality possessing esthetical taste. Scholars consider the subject of literature as a critical study of literary texts. They clarify that one of the main aims of the subject is the critical analysis of how language is used in different types of texts to identify meaning and find out text elements. With the help of reading various literary texts, students in secondary education of modern schools can receive skills of critical analysis through connecting the meaning of these texts with their lives and the world. Besides, teaching literature in secondary education can provide the ability to imagine the inner and outer worlds of any substance, to solve and investigate important, present, and future problems individually. A considerable number of scholars and studies have attempted to describe the importance of this discipline.
