Varieties of Transparency

Although the purpose of this chapter is to construct an anatomy of transparency, it is essential to address the triangular relationship between transparency, openness, and surveillance. The first question is whether a clear distinction can be drawn between transparency and openness. The second question concerns the relationship between transparency/openness and surveillance. This chapter examines transparency, focusing on directions and varieties of transparency and how they interact with their habitat and with each other. It distinguishes four directions of transparency and maps its varieties. The chapter also emphasizes the importance of examining the habitats within which transparency operates. Finally, it draws some brief conclusions, stressing the implications of the analysis for the measurement of transparency. The aim is to identify different directions and varieties of transparency in relatively neutral terms. Abstracting from the issue of direction, transparency can be analysed by means of a set of three dichotomies: event transparency versus process transparency; transparency in retrospect versus transparency in real time; and nominal transparency versus effective transparency.

The biggest problem with conventional anomaly signal detection using features was that it was difficult to use it in real time and it requires processing of network signals. Furthermore, analyzing network signals in real-time required vast amounts of processing for each signal, as each protocol contained various pieces of information. This paper suggests anomaly detection by analyzing the relationship among each feature to the anomaly detection model. The model analyzes the anomaly of network signals based on anomaly feature detection. The selected feature for anomaly detection does not require constant network signal updates and real-time processing of these signals. When the selected features are found in the received signal, the signal is registered as a potential anomaly signal and is then steadily monitored until it is determined as either an anomaly or normal signal. In terms of the results, it determined the anomaly with 99.7% (0.997) accuracy in f(4)(S0) and in case f(4)(REJ) received 11,233 signals with a normal or 171anomaly judgment accuracy of 98.7% (0.987).

The interactivity of an immersive environment comes up from the relationship that is established between the user and the system. This relationship results in a set of data exchanges between human and technological actors. The real-time biofeedback devices allow to collect in real time the biodata generated by the user during the exhibition. The analysis, processing and conversion of these biodata into multimodal data allows to relate the stimuli with the emotions they trigger. This work describes an adaptive model for biofeedback data flows management used in the design of interactive immersive systems. The use of an affective algorithm allows to identify the types of emotions felt by the user and the respective intensities. The mapping between stimuli and emotions creates a set of biodata that can be used as elements of interaction that will readjust the stimuli generated by the system. The real-time interaction generated by the evolution of the user’s emotional state and the stimuli generated by the system allows him to adapt attitudes and behaviors to the situations he faces.

Abstract Background Normal mitral annulus morphology is known to be saddle shape. There are a few reports regarding the relationship between flattening of the mitral annular saddle shape and mitral regurgitation. However, the relationship between aortic stenosis (AS) and mitral annulus morphology is unknown. Purpose To assess the impact of AS on mitral annular saddle shape using 3-dimentional transesophageal echocardiography. Methods A total of consecutive 83 subjects including 44 patients with severe AS (AS group) and 39 patients without AS (control group), who underwent real-time 3-dimentional transesophageal echocardiography of the mitral valve, were enrolled. The 3-dimentional geometry of the mitral annulus apparatus was evaluated by the parameters analyzed using dedicated quantification software such as anteroposterior diameter (APD), commissural width (CW), annular height (AH), mitral annulus (MA) area and annular height to commissural width ratio (AHCWR) as shown in Figure. We assessed the impact of severe AS on AHCWR, which is the key parameter showing flattening of the mitral annular saddle shape. These parameters were adjusted by body surface area (BSA). Exclusion criteria included left ventricular ejection fraction <50%, the presence of aortic regurgitation, mitral valve disease, pericardial or congenital diseases, endocarditis, cardiomyopathy, prior myocardial infarction, and paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation. Results Comparisons of mitral valve geometry between AS group and control group are summarized in Table. AH/BSA and AHCWR were significantly lower in AS group compared with control group. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed severe AS to be a significant and independent predictor of lowering AHCWR (β=−0.39, t=−4.04, p<0.001) (adjusted with MA area, selected by stepwise analysis). Conclusions Severe AS might contribute to flattening of the mitral annular saddle shape, lead to the mitral annular structural remodeling. Background. With an increase in Japanese cedar and cypress (JC) pollinosis, the relationship between JC pollen and atopic dermatitis (AD) has been studied. Some reports suggest that JC pollen can be one exacerbating factor for AD, but there has been no report that discusses JC pollen counts relating to AD symptom flare although actual airborne JC pollen counts can widely fluctuate throughout the pollen season. Objective. The relationship between symptom flare of AD and airborne JC pollen counts was examined. Methods. We monitored JC pollen counts in real time and divided the counts into low and high level. We then analyzed self-scored “itch intensity” recorded by 14 AD patients through a self-scoring diary. Results. Among the 14 patients, 7 had significantly higher itch intensity while the pollen counts were high. Conclusion. Even during the pollen season, actual airborne pollen counts can widely fluctuate. Our study suggested that symptom flare of AD could be influenced by the actual pollen counts.

First, Anti-balance method is used to build the model of q2,q3,q4 to figure out the Function expression of q2+q3+q4 .when q2+q3+q4 gets the minimum, the corresponded to the excess air ratio is the best excess air ratio. The excess air ratio is related to the load of boiler, so the function image describing the relationship between q2+q3+q4 and excess air ratio under the different load of 192.3MW, 215.8MW, 245.3MW and 298MW are made to get the best excess air ratio. Second, based on the model before, new variables q5 and q6 are added to complete the function formula of the efficiency and the excess air ratio, and four function image will be drew to show the tends. Finally, based on the conclusions above, smoke vents oxygen content can take the place of excess air ratio to achieve the purpose of monitoring the boiler in real time.

rs1801133 is a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) located in the sequence of MTHFR on human chromosome 1. The alleles of this SNP affect the activity of the MTHFR enzyme. People bearing C/T genotype have 66% activity of MTHFR while people with T/T genotype have only 25% activity. These reduced activities of MTHFR cause homocysteinemia. There are several publications on the relationship between homocysteinemia and human diseases such as cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, abnormal fetus, infertility and cancer. In this study, we built a molecular protocol for genotyping rs1801133 using real-time PCR HRM technique. This protocol could be used for diagnosis of molecular mechanism of homocysteinemia causing the mentoned above diseases as well as for the study of the relationship between rs1801133 and other human diseases. We successfully designed the primer pairs for genotyping and nucleotide sequencing rs1801133 by real-time PCR HRM and Sanger sequencing method. We also examined the optimal MgCl2 concentration for clear differentiation of three rs1801133 genotypes. Performance characteristics of the real-time PCR HRM protocol included of specificity, repeatability, reproducibility was evaluated and it showed good results. Comparison of genotyping results of rs1801133 between the realtime PCR HRM method and the Sanger nucleotide sequencing method showed good concordances. Finally, this real-time PCR HRM protocol for rs1801133 genotyping was applied on 100 human DNA samples to evaluate the clinical utility of the protocol.

ABSTRACTDisplacement loops (D-loops) are signature intermediates formed during homologous recombination. Numerous factors regulate D-loop formation and disruption, thereby influencing crucial aspects of DNA repair, including donor choice and the possibility of a crossover outcome. While D-loop detection methods exist, it is currently unfeasible to assess the relationship between D-loop editors and D-loop characteristics such as length and position. Here, we developed a novel in vitro assay to characterize the length and position of individual D-loop with base-pair resolution and deep coverage, while also revealing their distribution in a population. Non-denaturing bisulfite treatment modifies the cytosines on the displaced strand of the D-loop to uracil, leaving a permanent signature for the displaced strand. Subsequent single-molecule real-time sequencing uncovers the cytosine conversion patch as a D-loop footprint, revealing D-loop characteristics at unprecedented resolution. The D-loop Mapping Assay is widely applicable with different substrates and donor types and can be used to study factors that influence D-loop properties.

AbstractA device for measuring the flow, duration and volume characteristics of human puffing behaviour when smoking cigarettes is described. Cigarettes are smoked through a holder comprising a measured pressure drop across a critical orifice. The holder also contains a Light Emitting Diode (LED) and photodetector that measures light obscuration in order to estimate nicotine-free dry particulate matter (NFDPM, “tar”) delivery. All data are recorded on a puff-by-puff basis and displayed in real time. These NFDPM estimates are known as optical “tar” (OT), and are derived from the calibration of the OT measurement versus gravimetric NFDPM yields of cigarettes under a range of smoking regimes. In a test study, puff volumes from 20-80 mL were recorded to ± 6.0% of a pre-set volume, with an absolute error of 4.7 mL for an 80 mL volume drawn on a lit cigarette, and an average error of less than 2.0 mL across the range 20-80 mL. The relationship between NFDPM and OT was linear (R2 = 0.99) and accurate to ± 1.3 mg per cigarette over the range 1-23 mg per cigarette. The device provides an alternative to the widely used part filter methodology for estimating mouth level exposure with an added benefit that no further laboratory smoking replication or analysis is required. When used in conjunction with the part filter methodology, the puffing behaviour recorded can explain anomalies in the data while providing a second independent estimate.

Objective - Transparency is promoted as one of the most important measures against corruption. E-government provides greater access to information that can subsequently increase transparency, accountability, and be used as an effective anti-corruption tool. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between e-government and corruption. Methodology/Technique - To gain more insight, we also investigate the effect of e-procurement as one of the e-government initiatives for tackling corruption. We use observations from local government (districts and cities) in Indonesia during the period 2012–2015. Findings - The results show that e-government implementation is associated with lower corruption. E-government reduces corruption by removing discretion, thereby curbing the opportunities for arbitrary action that often result in corruption. Novelty - Moreover, the results also show that adopting e-procurement increases transparency and accountability through increased competition among bidders and enables real-time access to information, which ultimately reduces corruption in public procurement. This chapter aims to explore in-depth the relationship between the venture capitalist and the venture-backed company and account for how this relationship unfolds over time. To achieve this, the authors present evidence from three process case studies. The field study presented in this chapter is partly retrospective and partly in real time and is based on two rounds of focused interviews with the entrepreneurs and the venture capitalist. The findings show that several factors play a role, with confidence in the VC (Venture Capital) being essential to beginning the relationship and trust between the parties being essential to continuing it successfully. This relationship is a learning experience for both parties: while the entrepreneur becomes acquainted with the tools for daily, as well as strategic management, the venture capitalist learns how to effectively scout new attractive business ideas.
