The work shows examining of the centrifugal compressor for which there are no technical conditions by which the compressor manufacturer defines the form and important characteristics of the measuring installation. In the absence of the necessary data, a table for testing of centrifugal compressors was designed, where the pipeline measures and other details are freely defined in accordance with the available possibilities.

The stability considerations of centrifugal compressors become increasingly severe with the high pressure ratios, especially in aero-engines. Diffuser is the major subcomponent of centrifugal compressor, and its performance greatly influences the stability of compressor. This paper experimentally investigates the roles of vanes in diffuser on component instability and compression system instability. High pressure ratio centrifugal compressors with and without vanes in diffuser are tested and analyzed. Rig tests are carried out to obtain the compressor performance map. Dynamic pressure measurements and relevant Fourier analysis are performed to identify complex instability phenomena in the time domain and frequency domain, including rotating instability, stall, and surge. For component instability, vanes in diffuser are capable of suppressing the emergence of rotating stall in the diffuser at full speeds, but barely affect the characteristics of rotating instability in the impeller at low and middle speeds. For compression system instability, it is shown that the use of vanes in diffuser can effectively postpone the occurrence of compression system surge at full speeds. According to the experimental results and the one-dimensional flow theory, vanes in diffuser turn the diffuser pressure rise slope more negative and thus improve the stability of compressor stage, which means lower surge mass flow rate.

Rotating stall waves that travel against the direction of rotor rotation are reported for the first time and a new, low-order analytical approach to model centrifugal compressor stability is introduced. The model is capable of dealing with unsteady radially swirling flows and the dynamic effects of impeller-diffuser component interaction as it occurs in centrifugal compression systems. A simple coupling criterion is developed from first principles to explain the interaction mechanism important for system stability. The model findings together with experimental data explain the mechanism for first-ever observed backward traveling rotating stall in centrifugal compressors with vaned diffusers. Based on the low-order model predictions, an air injection scheme between the impeller and the vaned diffuser is designed for the NASA Glenn CC3 high-speed centrifugal compressor. The steady air injection experiments show an increase of 25% in surge-margin with an injection mass flow of 0.5% of the compressor mass flow. In addition, it is experimentally demonstrated that this injection scheme is robust to impeller tip-clearance effects and that a reduced number of injectors can be applied for similar gains in surge-margin. The results presented in this paper firmly establish the connection between the experimentally observed dynamic phenomena in the NASA CC3 centrifugal compressor and a first principles based coupling criterion. In addition, guidelines are given for the design of centrifugal compressors with enhanced stability.

In order to study the effect of the trailing edge sweep angle of the centrifugal impeller on the aerodynamic performance of the centrifugal compressor, 6 groups of centrifugal impellers with different bending angles and 5 groups of different inclination angles were designed to achieve different impeller blade trailing edge angle. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was used to simulate and analyze the flow field of centrifugal compressors with different blade shapes under design conditions. The research results show that for transonic micro centrifugal compressors, changing the blade trailing edge sweep angle can improve the compressor’s isentropic efficiency and pressure ratio. The pressure ratio of the compressor shows a trend of increasing first and then decreasing with the increase of the blade bending angle. When the blade bending angle is 45°, the pressure ratio of the centrifugal compressor reaches a maximum of 1.69, and the isentropic efficiency is 67.3%. But changing the inclination angle of the blade trailing edge has little effect on the isentropic efficiency and pressure ratio. The sweep angle of blade trailing edge is an effective method to improve its isentropic efficiency and pressure ratio. This analysis method provides a reference for the rational selection of the blade trailing edge angle, and provides a reference for the design of micro centrifugal compressors under high Reynolds numbers.

Abstract Rotating stall is an important unstable flow phenomenon that leads to performance degradation and limits the stability boundary in centrifugal compressors. The volute is one of the sources to induce the non-axisymmetric flow in a centrifugal compressor, which has an important effect on the performance of compressors. However, the influence of volute on rotating stall is not clear. Therefore, the effects of volute on rotating stall by experimental and numerical simulation have been explored in this paper. It’s shown that one rotating stall cell generates in a specific location and disappears in another specific location of the vaneless diffuser as a result of the distorted flow field caused by the volute. Also, the cells cannot stably rotate in a whole circle. The frequency related to rotating stall captured in the experiment is 43.9% of the impeller passing frequency (IPF), while it is 44.7% of IPF captured by three-dimensional unsteady numerical simulation, which proves the accuracy of the numerical method in this study. The numerical simulation further reveals that the stall cell initialized in a specific location can be split into several cells during the evolution process. The reason for this is that the blockage in the vaneless diffuser induced by rotating stall is weakened by the mainstream from the impeller exit to make one initialized cell disperse into several ones. The volute has an important influence on the generation and evolution process of the rotating stall cells of compressors. By optimizing volute geometry to reduce the distortion of the flow field, it is expected that rotating stall can be weakened or suppressed, which is helpful to widen the operating range of centrifugal compressors.

This paper provides the results of the study of a spatial flow in a low-flow stage of a SVD-22 centrifugal compressor of computational fluid dynamics methods using the Ansys CFX 14.0 software package. Low flow stages are used as the last stages of multistage centrifugal compressors. Such multistage compressors are widely used in boosting compressor stations for natural gas, in chemical industries. The flow features in low-flow stages require independent research. This is due to the fact that the developed techniques for designing centrifugal compressor stages are created for medium-flow and high-flow stages and do not apply to low-flow stages. Generally at manufacturing new centrifugal compressors, it is impossible to make a control measurement of the parameters of the working process inside the flow path elements. Computational fluid dynamics methods are widely used to overcome this difficulties. However verification and validation of CFD methods are necessary for accurate modeling of the workflow. All calculations were conducted on one of the SPbPU clusters. Parameters of one cluster node: AMD Opteron 280 2 cores, 8GB RAM. The calculations were conducted using 4 nodes (HP MPI Distributed Parallel startup type) with their full load by parallelizing processes on each node.

Inviscid, compressible flow along a rotating elemental stream-tube is taken as a model for flow through a turbomachine blade passage. For this model an analytic expression for the relative secondary vorticity of the flow is derived which permits the mean stream-surface twist about the tube axis to be evaluated. This twist implies a migration of the fluid particles from one tube corner to the contiguous tube corner, a flow feature suppressed by all existing stream-sheet flow calculations in turbomachine blade rows. The analysis is applied to a centrifugal compressor configuration where the effects on the secondary flow of hub/shroud geometry, blade shape, compressibility, and meridional diffusion are investigated. The stream-surface twist, not being primarily dependent upon the elemental nature of the stream-tube is taken as a measure of stream-surface twist and consequent surface flow migration in finite blade passages. The levels of twist obtained from the analysis are similar to those obtained in three dimensional flow calculations using primitive variables as illustrated by Bosman (1) (2)‡ and show that existing streamsheet and streamsheet stacking methods, all of which suppress the relative passage vortex are an inadequate model of the flow in centrifugal compressors. The analysis clearly shows that contrary to common assumption, centrifugal compressor impellers are capable of generating a passage vortex in the same direction as that of blade rotation.

Abstract Synchronous motor driven centrifugal compressors are widely used in the oil and gas industry. In evaluating the optimum selection of synchronous motor drivers for centrifugal compressors, it is important to understand the factors influencing a proper match for a centrifugal compressor and its synchronous motor driver. The buyer should specify process requirements and define possible operating scenarios for the entire life of the motor driven centrifugal compressor train. The compressor designer will use the buyer-specified process conditions to model the aerothermodynamic behavior of the compressor and characterize its performance. Performance, controllability, starting capabilities as well as the optimum power margin required for a future-oriented design must also be considered. This paper reviews the criteria for evaluating the optimal combination of a centrifugal compressor and its synchronous motor driver as an integral package. It also addresses API standard requirements on synchronous motor driven centrifugal compressors. Design considerations for optimal selection and proper sizing of compressor drivers include large starting torque requirements to enable compressor start from settle-out conditions and to prevent flaring are addressed. Start-up capabilities of the motor driver can significantly impact the reliability and operability of the compressor train. API 617 on centrifugal compressors refers to API 546 for synchronous motor drivers. In this paper, requirements of API 617 and 546 are reviewed and several important design and sizing requirements are presented. In the effort to optimize plant design, and maintain the performance requirements, the paper discusses optimization options, such as direct on-line starting method to explore the motor rating limits, and the use of synchronous motors for power factor correction to eliminate or reduce the need for reactive power compensation by capacitor banks. This paper presents a novel approach to show constant reactive power lines on traditional V curves. It also complements capability curves of synchronous motors with lines of constant efficiency. The paper discusses variable frequency drive options currently used for synchronous motors in compressor applications. The paper addresses the available variable frequency drive types, their impact on the electrical grid, and motor design considerations with a view to summarizing factors important to the selection of variable frequency drives.

Currently, 3D-CFD design optimization of centrifugal compressors in terms of the surge margin is one major unresolved issue. On that account, this paper introduces a new kind of objective function. The objective function is based on local flow parameters present at the design point of the centrifugal compressor. A centrifugal compressor with a vaned diffuser is considered to demonstrate the performance of this approach. By means of a variation of the beta angle distribution of the impeller and diffuser blade, 73 design variations are generated, and several local flow parameters are evaluated. Finally, the most promising flow parameter is transferred into an objective function, and an optimization is carried out. It is shown that the new approach delivers similar results as a comparable optimization with a classic objective function using two operating points for surge margin estimation, but with less computational effort since no second operating point near the surge needs to be considered.

In designing an impeller for centrifugal compressors, it is important to predict the natural frequencies accurately in order to avoid resonance caused by pressure fluctuations due to rotorstator interaction. However, the natural frequencies of an impeller change under high-density fluid conditions. The natural frequencies of pump impellers are lower in water than in air because of the added mass effect of water, and in high-pressure compressors the mass density of the discharge gas can be about one-third that of water. So to predict the natural frequencies of centrifugal compressor impellers, the influence of the gas must be considered. We previously found in the non-rotating case that some natural frequencies of an impeller decreased under high-density gas conditions but others increased and that the increase of natural frequencies is caused by fluid-structure interaction, not only the added mass effect but also effect of the stiffness of the gas. In order to develop a method for predicting natural frequencies of centrifugal compressor impellers for high-density gas applications, this paper presents experimental results obtained using a variable-speed centrifugal compressor with vaned diffusers. The maximum mass density of its discharge gas is approximately 300 kg/m3. The vibration stress on an impeller when the compressor was speeding up or slowing down was measured by strain gages, and the natural frequencies were determined by resonance frequencies. The results indicate that for high-density centrifugal compressors, some natural frequencies of an impeller increased in high-density gas. To predict this behavior, we developed a calculation method based on the theoretical analysis of a rotating disc. Its predictions are in good agreement with experimental results.

In this paper the effect of the tip clearance was studied with six different centrifugal compressors and data available in literature. The changes in the overall performance of the compressor stage were examined. The aim was to study the influence of the different design parameters to the tip clearance loss. It was evident by the previous studies that the sensitivity of the centrifugal compressor to the tip clearance loss varies with different designs. However, for the designer it is important to know the effect of the tip clearance loss in order to initially evaluate the quality of different designs. Analysis of the data demonstrated that no clear correlation between the sensitivity of the tip clearance loss and the specific speed, the diffusion ratio, the blade number and the ratio of blade heights exists.
