AbstractBackgroundEvidence-based practice (EBP) has been the focus of increasing attention in the teaching and delivery of both complementary and conventional healthcare. Western herbal medicine (WHM) is a system of complementary healthcare rooted in tradition. How WHM practitioners perceive, are prepared for, and use EBP, has to date been largely ignored. We therefore examined the use, opinion, skills, and training in EBP, and barriers and facilitators of EBP uptake, among herbal practitioners in the United States (US).MethodsThe study utilized a cross-sectional, descriptive survey design. A sample of US clinical herbalists was invited to complete a validated online questionnaire, the Evidence-Based practice Attitude and utilization SurvEy (EBASE).ResultsSeventy-four US herbal practitioners completed the survey (response rate=35 %). Participants demonstrated a generally positive attitude toward EBP (median attitude subscore 31 [possible range=8–40]), a moderate to high level of self-assessed skill in EBP (median skill subscore 46 [13–65]) and a moderate level of EBP uptake (median use subscore 12 [0–24]). Apart from a lack of clinical evidence in herbal medicine, there were few perceived barriers to EBP uptake among herbal practitioners. Access to the Internet, online databases and full-text journal articles were considered most useful in facilitating the uptake of EBP in WHM practice.ConclusionsRespondents’ attitudes, skill level, and uptake of EBP were generally consistent with other complementary and alternative medicine providers. Educational initiatives, including those focused on the appraisal and application of evidence, may help to optimize the use of EBP among WHM practitioners.

Despite the effort of the Federal Government of Nigeria to enhance the quality of the learning process in Nigerian universities by introducing the use of ICT resources in schools through which lecturers will acquire knowledge and skills that would enable them source the internet and utilize e-learning resources for qualitative teaching, the attainment of the e-learning objectives in National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) appears elusive. The study investigated the utilization of e-learning resources among lecturers in National Open University study centers in South East Nigeria. Three research questions guided the study, while survey design was adopted. The population of the study comprised all the 724 facilitators in National Open University study centers, South East Nigeria. The sample size comprised 84 lecturers obtained through simple random sampling and accidental sampling techniques. Questionnaire was used to collect data. The reliabilities of the clusters in the instrument which were ascertained with Cronbach alpha method were found to be 0.71, 0.80 and 0.77. The data collected were analyzed using mean. The findings of the study revealed that many of the lecturers utilized e-learning resources for instructional delivery, research purposes and evaluation purposes. Based on the findings, it was recommended that University administrators should promote the use of e learning among lecturers by providing technologically enhanced libraries in order to support the use of e learning for the tripartite purposes of instructional delivery, research and evaluation.

Article visualizations:

In Ghana, the integration of technology into the teaching and learning process seems to be making strides in tertiary education. However, the case is not the same in Senior High Schools. This study, therefore, sought to assess Senior High School Geography teachers' knowledge in integrating technology into their classroom adapting the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) model as a framework for analysis. The study adopted the descriptive survey design to provide a comprehensive analysis of the research problem. Through a survey, a total of 113 geography teachers participated in the study, responding to a TPACK survey questionnaire. The data were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study showed that teachers possessed a high level of content and pedagogical knowledge in geography. The analysis, however, showed that teachers were not as confident as they were in content and pedagogy compared to technological knowledge and its subsequent integration into the teaching and learning of geography. It was, therefore, recommended among others that courses at the higher education level should integrate Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into teaching and learning to help student-teachers appreciate the place of specific technologies, hardware and software in the teaching and learning of their respective disciplines.
