Impact testing of a typical high-speed ship section has shown that the mode of vibration most likely to fall in the frequency range of excitation resulting from propeller or rotor blade passing is that where the ship frame rocks in a fore and aft direction about its base connection to the hull plate. This vibration has significant amplitude to either side of the keel and it is found that connection between the inboard and outboard sides is weak. As a consequence, vibration can occur in two modes in which the opposite sides of the hull either move together or in antiphase. This leads to the structural strain energy in the two modes being slightly different, the mode with rather less strain energy having slightly lower frequency. Because the frequencies of the two modes are close together, the transient response exhibits beating in which vibration energy is exchanged between the two sides of the hull at the low beat frequency. Vibration of the ship frames in this manner appears to have been the cause of minor weld cracking where the top of stiffeners pass through cutouts in the web of the ship frames within the fuel tank areas of the hull.

AbstractObjective:This study investigated the effect of Betadine on ciliated human respiratory epithelial cells.Methods:Epithelial cells from human sinonasal mucosa were cultured at the air–liquid interface. The cultures were tested with Hanks' balanced salt solution containing 10 mM HEPES (control), 100 µM ATP (positive control), 5 per cent Betadine or 10 per cent Betadine (clinical dose). Ciliary beat frequency was analysed using a high-speed camera on a computer imaging system.Results:Undiluted 10 per cent Betadine (n = 6) decreased the proportion of actively beating cilia over 1 minute (p < 0.01). Ciliary beat frequency decreased from 11.15 ± 4.64 Hz to no detectable activity. The result was similar with 5 per cent Betadine (n = 7), with no significant difference compared with the 10 per cent solution findings.Conclusion:Betadine, at either 5 and 10 per cent, was ciliotoxic. Caution should be applied to the use of topical Betadine solution on the respiratory mucosal surface.

1. Glide-comparison measurements were made on ten species of East African soaring birds using a Schleicher ASK-14 powered sailplane. Horizontal and vertical speed differences between bird and glider were measured by a photographic method, and used to estimate the bird's horizontal and vertical speeds relative to the air. The analysis refers to the white-backed vulture, since by far the largest number of measurements was obtained on this species. 2. A regression analysis using a two-term approximation to the glide polar yielded an implausibly high estimate of induced drag, which was attributed to a lack of observations at lift coefficients above 0.72. An amended glide polar was constructed assuming elliptical lift distribution and a maximum lift coefficient of 1.6 to define the low-speed end, while the high-speed end was made to pass through the mean horizontal and sinking speeds of all the experimental points. This curve gave a minimum sinking speed of 0.76 m/s at a forward speed of 10 m/s, and a best glide ratio of 15.3:1 at 13 m/s. It did not differ significantly (in the statistical sense) from the original regression curve. 3. In comparing the estimated circling performance, based on the amended glide polar, with that of the ASK-14, it was concluded that the rates of sink of both should be comparable, but that the glider would require thermals with radii about 4.3 times as great as those needed to sustain the birds. The conclusions are consistent with experience of soaring in company with birds. 4. In an attempt to assess the adaptive significance of the low-aspect-ratio wings of birds specializing in thermal soaring, the white-backed vulture's circling performance was compared with that of an ‘albatross-shaped vulture’, an imaginary creature having the same mass as a white-backed vulture, combined with the body proportions of a wandering albatross. It appears that the real white-back would be at an advantage when trying to remain airborne in thermals with radii between 14 and 17 m, but that the albatross-shaped vulture would climb faster in all wider thermals; on account of its much better maximum glide ratio, it should also achieve higher cross-country speeds. It is concluded that the wing shape seen in vultures and storks is not an adaptation to thermal soaring as such, but is more probably a compromise dictated by take-off and landing requirements. 5. The doubts recently expressed by Tucker & Parrott (1970) about the results and conclusions of Raspet (1950a, b; 1960) are re-inforced by the present experience.

The kinematics of swimming in larval Xenopus laevis has been studied using computer-assisted analysis of high-speed (200 frames s−1) ciné records. The major findings are as follows. 1. At speeds below 6 body lengths (L) per second, tail beat frequency is approximately 10 Hz and, unlike for most aquatic vertebrates, is not correlated with specific swimming speed. At higher speeds, tail beat frequency and speed are positively correlated. 2. Xenopus tadpoles show an increase in the maximum amplitude of the tail beat with increasing velocity up to approximately 6Ls−1. Above that speed amplitude approaches an asymptote at 20 % of body length. 3. Anterior yaw is absent at velocities below 6Ls−1, unlike for other anuran larvae, but is present at higher speeds. 4. At speeds below 6Ls−1 there is a positive linear relationship between length of the propulsive wave (λ) and specific swimming speed. At higher speeds wavelength is constant at approximately 0.8L. 5. There is a shift in the modulation of wavelength and tail beat frequency with swimming speed around 5.6Ls−1, suggesting two different swimming modes. The slower mode is used during open water cruising and suspension feeding. The faster, sprinting mode may be used to avoid predators. 6. Froude efficiencies are similar to those reported for fishes and other anuran larvae. 7. Unlike Rana and Bufo larvae, the axial muscle mass of Xenopus increases dramatically with size from less than 10% of total mass for the smallest animals to more than 45% of total mass for the largest animals. This increase is consistent with maintaining high locomotor performance throughout development.

Cultured mammalian ciliated cells from the respiratory tract respond to mechanical stimulation of their cell surface by displaying a rapid transient increase in beat frequency. Surrounding adjacent and more distal neighboring ciliated cells display a similar frequency response after a short delay that is proportional to their distance from the stimulated cell. To characterize the progression of this communicated response we developed an automated computer-assisted image-analysis system to examine high-speed films of responding cells. Transmission of the frequency response between cells occurs at 0.63 cells/s at 25 degrees C and 1.54 cells/s at 37 degrees C. We have also confirmed that gap junctions exist between cells in both epithelial explants and outgrowths and that adjacent or nonadjacent ciliated, as well as nonciliated, cells are electrically coupled. We postulate that mechanical stimulation and intercellular communication provide a mechanism to regulate beat frequency between ciliated cells in order to facilitate efficient ciliary function and mucus transport.

The aerodynamic force acting on the pantograph by the airflow is obviously unsteady and has a certain vibration frequency and amplitude, while the high-speed train passes through the tunnel. In addition to the unsteady behavior in the open-air operation, the compressive and expansion waves in the tunnel will be generated due to the influence of the blocking ratio. The propagation of the compression and expansion waves in the tunnel will affect the pantograph pressure distribution and cause the pantograph stress state to change significantly, which affects the current characteristics of the pantograph. In this paper, the aerodynamic force of the pantograph is studied with the method of the IDDES combined with overset grid technique when high speed train passes through the tunnel. The results show that the aerodynamic force of the pantograph is subjected to violent oscillations when the pantograph passes through the tunnel, especially at the entrance of the tunnel, the exit of the tunnel and the expansion wave passing through the pantograph. The changes of the pantograph aerodynamic force can reach a maximum amplitude of 106%. When high-speed trains pass through tunnels at different speeds, the aerodynamic coefficients of the pantographs are roughly the same.

The use of composites in the aircraft industry has generated a great need for structural health monitoring and damage detection systems, to allow for safer use of complex materials. Such is the case with helicopter blades - these components nowadays are mostly composed of carbon fiber or glass fiber reinforced plastics laminates, epoxy and honeycomb filled core structures. The use of composite materials on the main rotor blade also allows for more complex and efficient shapes to be designed, but at the same time, their use requires an additional effort when it comes to structural monitoring, since damage can occur and go unnoticed. This work presents experimental results for structural health monitoring method based on strain energy. The test subject is a full-scale composite helicopter main rotor blade, which is a highly flexible, slender beam that can display unusual dynamic behavior with orthotropic behavior. This damage detection method is based on the modal strain properties, and a damage detection index is used to identify and quantify damage. A test setup was built to carry out an experimental modal analysis on the main rotor blade. For that purpose, a total of 55 uniaxial accelerometers were used on the helicopter blade to measure the displacement modes of the structure. To compute the strain modes from the displacement modes, central differences approximation is used. Damage is introduced on the blade by attaching a small mass to two different locations. Experimental results show the possibility of locating damage in this case.

The paper discusses the problem of evaluating vibration energy dissipation of a composite material. It is suggested to express the dissipation cofficient in a line (2). The reduced component dissipation coefficients c i φi are the members of the line. The ratio of reduction c i , shows the proportion by which a separate component adds to the energy dissipation of the entire composition. By analysing the accumulated and dissipated strain energy of a composite material were obtained (6). On the basis of these expressions, formulas for calculating the dissipation coefficients of a three-layer bar and that with a galvanic covering were devised. The analysis made leads to the following conclusions: - the vibration energy dissipation coefficient of a composite material is equal to the sum of the reduced dissipation coefficients of the composition component materials; - the ratio of reduction c i depends on the value of the component accumulated energy; - for comparing separate components as to the energy dissipation, the product φ i E i should be used.

Background: Research is ongoing relating to the analysis of a set of issues that arise in connection with the creation of the operating on the basis of vacuum magnetic technologies a transcontinental high-speed land transport corridor, connecting the eastern regions of China with Russia. As part of the variation calculus task, the geopolitical, economic, social, logistic, geographic, geomorphological, seismological, topographic components of the project are considered, in which it is assumed that the high speed overland route will pass through the north-western part of the historical region of Dzungaria. Aim: Find the most optimal from the point of view of the above components the location of the most important section of high speed overland route passing through Central Asia. Methods: Variational methods for solving an optimization problem with the use of a computer math system. Results: After creating a fairly informative and versatile picture of the region in question, the foundations of the corresponding mathematical models are built. Conclusion: The New Dzungarian Gates is a key element in choosing the location of a high-speed overland route based on VMLT.

The principal physical mechanism of sound generation is similar in songbirds and humans, despite large differences in their vocal organs. Whereas vocal fold dynamics in the human larynx are well characterized, the vibratory behaviour of the sound-generating labia in the songbird vocal organ, the syrinx, is unknown. We present the first high-speed video records of the intact syrinx during induced phonation. The syrinx of anaesthetized crows shows a vibration pattern of the labia similar to that of the human vocal fry register. Acoustic pulses result from short opening of the labia, and pulse generation alternates between the left and right sound sources. Spontaneously calling crows can also generate similar pulse characteristics with only one sound generator. Airflow recordings in zebra finches and starlings show that pulse tone sounds can be generated unilaterally, synchronously or by alternating between the two sides. Vocal fry-like dynamics therefore represent a common production mechanism for low-frequency sounds in songbirds. These results also illustrate that complex vibration patterns can emerge from the mechanical properties of the coupled sound generators in the syrinx. The use of vocal fry-like dynamics in the songbird syrinx extends the similarity to this unusual vocal register with mammalian sound production mechanisms.
