La automedicación forma parte del autocuidado y es considerada como un recurso de salud pública primaria en el sistema de atención de la salud. Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia y patrones de consumo que influyen en la automedicación de los estudiantes de la Universidad del Magdalena Métodos: El estudio corresponde a una investigación de carácter descriptivo, de corte transversal, y enfoque cuantitativo; la muestra se determinó por conglomerados, conformada por 312 estudiantes activos matriculados en pregrado de la Universidad del Magdalena de la ciudad de Santa Marta. Resultados: La práctica de la automedicación se vio reflejado en un 97%; los motivos por los cuales se automedican los estudiantes tienen relación con la aparición de síntomas tales como el dolor y síntomas gripales, los cuales son tratados a partir del consumo de medicamentos tipo analgésicos, antiinflamatorios, con una prevalencia del 84,26%. El principal motivo para automedicarse se relaciona con la levedad de los sintomas; el consejo de familiares en un 46,87% refleja su fuente de información; existe influencia por la publicidad especialmente televisión e internet; finalmente el 71% tiene conocimiento de las consecuencias que acarrea el automedicarse.Conclusiones: La práctica de la automedicación en la población universitaria es alta; los factores influyentes se relacionan con aparición de sintomas, el consejo de familiares, la influencia de la publicidad, la levedad de los sintomas y la falta de tiempo para visitar al médico. Self-medication is part f self-care and is considered as a primary public health resource in the health care system. Objective: To determine the prevalence and consumption patterns that influence the automation of the students of the Universidad del Magdalena. Methods: The study corresponds to a descriptive cross-sectional and quantitative approach investigation; the sample was determined by conglomerates, made up of 312 active students enrolled in undergraduate studies at the Universidad del Magdalena the city of the Santa Marta. Results: The practice of self-medication was reflected in 97%; the reasons for which the students self-medicate are related to the appearance of symptoms stories, such as pain and flu-like symptoms, which are treated from the consumption at analgesic, anti-inflammatory drugs with prevalence of 84,26%.The main reason for self-medication is related to the mildness of the symptoms; the council of relatives in 46,87% reflects their source of information; there is influence by advertising especially television and internet; finally 71% are aware of the consequences of self -medication. Conclusions: The practice of self-medication in the University population is high; influencing factors are related to the appearance of symptoms the advice of relatives, the influence of advertising the mildness of symptoms and lack of the time to visit the doctor.

Background: Systematic screening for antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 is a crucial tool for surveillance of the COVID-19 pandemic. The University of Salamanca (USAL) in Spain designed a project called “DIANCUSAL” (Diagnosis of New Coronavirus, COVID-19, in University of Salamanca) to measure antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 among its ~34,000 students and academic staff, as the influence of the university community in the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the city of Salamanca and neighboring towns hosting USAL campuses could be substantial. Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among USAL students, professors and staff and to evaluate the demographic, academic, clinical and lifestyle and behavioral factors related to seropositivity. Methodology: The DIANCUSAL study is an ongoing university population-based cross-sectional study, with the work described herein conducted from July–October 2020. All USAL students, professors and staff were invited to complete an anonymized questionnaire. Seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was detected and quantified by using chemiluminescent assays for IgG and IgM. Principal findings: A total of 8197 (24.71%) participants were included. The mean age was 31.4 (14.5 SD) years, and 66.0% of the participants were female. The seroprevalence was 8.25% overall and was highest for students from the education campus (12.5%) and professors from the biomedical campus (12.6%), with significant differences among faculties (p = 0.006). Based on the questionnaire, loss of smell and fever were the symptoms most strongly associated with seropositivity, and 22.6% of seropositive participants were asymptomatic. Social distancing was the most effective hygiene measure (p = 0.0007). There were significant differences in seroprevalence between participants with and without household exposure to SARS-CoV-2 (p = 0.0000), but not between students who lived in private homes and those who lived in dormitories. IgG antibodies decreased over time in the participants with confirmed self-reported COVID-19 diagnoses. Conclusions: The analysis revealed an overall 8.25% seroprevalence at the end of October 2020, with a higher seroprevalence in students than in staff. Thus, there is no need for tailored measures for the USAL community as the official average seroprevalence in the area was similar (7.8% at 22 June and 12.4 at 15 November of 2020). Instead, USAL members should comply with public health measures.

Self-medication is a common incidence in the world today. This study aims to evaluate self-medication among university students of Multan, Pakistan. This randomized cross sectional study was carried out in Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan during December 2015- January 216. A sample size of 200 students was randomly selected. Response rate was 90% (n=182).The prevalence of self-medication among the students was determined to be 83%. There was difference in perception of pharmacy students and students of other professions. Most common condition in which students did self-medication was headache (49.66%; n=75). Students also showed tendency of self-medication in case of herbal and essential oil products (46.35%). Awareness concerning insecurity and benefits of self-medication must be spread among students to avoid the complications of self-medication.

The aims of this cross-sectional survey were to document the prevalence, the determinants, and the reasons of oral medication use without the prescription of a physician among a random sample of 672 parents of students attending randomly selected public schools in Italy. A total of 69.2% practiced self-medication at least once. The odds of having performed a self-medication were higher in females, in younger population, and in those who have had a health problem in the preceding year and were lower in respondents with a middle or lower school level of education. Among those reporting experience of self-medication, 53.4% have practiced at least once in the last year and this was more likely for those who have had a health problem. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were more frequently used without a prescription in the last year. Two-thirds inappropriately self-medicated in the last year at least once. Of those who did not report a self-medication, 13.1% were willing to practice it. Females were more willing and those with a secondary school level of education less willing to practice self-medication. The frequency of oral self-medication was quite high and in most cases inappropriate with a potential impact on the health status and educative programs are needed.

Background: Self-medication is defined as the use of medicines to treat self-recognized or self-diagnosed conditions or symptoms, instead of seeking advice from professionals. Aim: Our study was aimed to assess knowledge, attitude and practice of self-medication among undergraduates in different colleges of Kathmandu valley. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among undergraduates of Kathmandu valley. A semi-structured questionnaire was distributed to students in 4 different colleges. Chi-square test was used to determine statistical significance. Likert’s scale was used to measure attitude. Results: 240 students participated in this study. Totally, (92.9%) students had known and taken medicine without doctor’s prescription. More than half of the participants (56.6%) had good knowledge on self-medication and nearly three quarter (74.7%) of the respondents had a positive attitude regarding self-medication. Fever, cough/cold and aches/pain were the most common symptoms for self-medication, thus making antipyretics and analgesics the most popular self-medication drugs. Pharmacists and family were the major source of information regarding self-medication. Conclusion: Based on the findings, the prevalence of self-medication was high (94.9%). Majority respondents had good knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of self-medication but still practiced it.

  Abstract   Self-medication is a human effort to treat diseases or symptoms of minor ailments such as fever, cough, flu, pain and others without a doctor's prescription. In practice, limited knowledge of drugs and their use can be a source of medication errors (medication error). This research was conducted with a cross sectional descriptive research method. Data was collected through a validated questionnaire filling technique. A total of 300 respondents involved in this study were selected by consecutive sampling method from 3 pharmacies in the city of Purwokerto which were determined proportionally according to the population of each pharmacy. Data were analyzed by Chi-square test and Fisher's test used Statistical Product and Servicer Solution (SPSS) version 17. The results showed that the patient's knowledge level was 22.6% classified as poor, 48% classified as moderate, and 29.4% classified as good. The use of self-medication is 26.3% irrational and 73.7% rational. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the patient's level of knowledge was classified as moderate with a percentage of 48%. While self-administered rationality is classified as rational with a percentage of 73.7%.   Keywords: Self-medication, Pharmacy, Knowledge, Rationality of drug use

The aim of the study is to study the prevalence, determinants, and reasons for parents using oral medications to treat their children in Volgograd (Russia). Materials and methods. An instant simultaneous cross-sectional anonymous survey of 390 mothers of children aged 1 to 14 years was conducted during October-March 2018-2019 in the city of Volgograd (Russia). Criteria for inclusion in the study: mothers of children older than 1 year. Exclusion criteria: other legal representatives of children (fathers, grandmothers, guardians, etc.); women with one child under the age of 1 year; mothers of children with chronic diseases; persons with medical education. The data obtained were analyzed using the STATISTICA-10 software package. To build models of logistic regression, the Student t-test was evaluated for independent samples (to assess the differences between the obtained data) and the χ2 criterion for the assessment of categorical differences. Results: it was found that 71.0% of mothers used the practice of self-medication of children, while its frequency depended only on the level of family income (χ2 = 7.077, p = 0.030) and did not depend on the age of the respondents (χ2 = 0.211, p = 0.976), education (χ2 = 2.626, p = 0.270), the number of children in the family (χ2 = 2.819, p = 0.421). Most often, antipyretic drugs (93.8%), decongestants (72.9%), antiallergic drugs (49.5%), enterosorbents (44.4%), immunomodulators (26.7%), antibiotics (7.9%) were used for self-medication. Using the logistic regression model, it was shown that the main determinant of self-medication in children is delayed treatment of parents for medical help (OR = 0.27, p <0.001). Conclusion. The high frequency of self-medication dictates the need for further research to understand this phenomenon.

Purpose. Self-medication practice is often associated with irrational medication use. The aim of this study was to assess self-medication practices among community of Harar City and its surroundings, Eastern Ethiopia. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted through exit interview in selected drug outlets of Harar City among 370 clients from March to April, 2017. The data was coded and entered into epi-data and processed and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results. Many participants practiced self-medication to alleviate their headache (30.30%), to treat their respiratory disorders (29.50%), and to treat their gastrointestinal disorders (27%). More than half (57.8%) of study participants declared that they were practicing self-medication due to prior experience and seeking less expensive service (20.50%). Two-fifths of them (40.3%) reported pharmacy professionals as source of information while 18.9% of respondents were advised by neighbors, friends, or relatives. About one-third (31.9%) of them did not have any source of information for self-medication practice. The most common type of drug used for self-medication by the participants was analgesic (42.2%). Approximately one-third (31.1%) of the subjects were expecting to be counseled by the pharmacy professionals about the drug side effects and to be helped in selecting their self-medication drug (30.3%). Conclusion. Varieties of medications were used among study participants ranging from antipain to that of antibiotics for different complaints including headache, respiratory complaints, and gastrointestinal problems. Experience with drugs and diseases as well as affordability were frequently reported reasons for self-medication practice. Participants had different views toward the role of pharmacy professionals. Hence, it is very important to educate patients on responsible use of medications and create awareness on the role of pharmacist in self-selected medication use in community.

Coronaviruses (CoVs) are a large family of respiratory viruses that can cause mild to moderate illness. The new variant COVID-19 has started to spread rapidly since December 2019, posing a new threat to global health. To counter the spread of the virus, the Italian government forced the population to close all activities starting from 9 March 2020 to 4 May 2020. In this scenario, we conducted a cross-sectional study on a heterogeneous sample (average age of 28 ± 12 years, 62.6% females) of the University of Naples Federico II (Italy). The aim of the study was to describe the lifestyle change in the university population during quarantine for the COVID 19 pandemic. Participants compiled an online survey consisting of 3 sections: socio-demographic data, dietary behaviours, physical activity habits and psychological aspects. The different results by gender are: 90.8% of females continued to work from home (81.9% were students); 34.8% increased their physical activity; and, only 0.8% prefer ready meals. Whereas, the same percentage of men continued to work from home (90%), but only 72.1% were students (p < 0.001 vs. females), only 23.9% increased physical activity (p < 0.001) and 1.7% favous ready meals. Our data shows that the male population was more affected by isolation and quarantine reporting more unfavourable behavioural changes.

This study determines and analyzes the prevalence of Urinary Incontinence (UI) and its demographic and clinical predictors. This epidemiological and cross-sectional study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University of São Paulo, Nursing School. The sample was randomly selected by cluster technique and included 519 individuals aged ≥18 years, living in 341 houses in urban areas. Data were analyzed through Chi-Square, Hosmer Lemeshow’s test and multivariate logistic regression (stepwise). Prevalence rates were standardized by gender and age. Of the 519 people composing the sample: 20.1% had UI, 32.9% were women and 6.2% were men. Longer duration of losses (OR = 29.3; p<0.001), diabetes mellitus (OR = 17.7; p<0.001), stroke (OR = 15.9; p<0.001), and cystocele (OR = 12.5; p <0.001) were the factors most strongly associated with UI. This study enabled the identification of UI epidemiology and can contribute to the development of public policies for its primary and secondary prevention and treatment, even if such measures are initially implemented at the city level.

Abstract.SELF-EFFICACY IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS: DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE DEGREE IN PRIMARY EDUCATION AND SCIENCE DEGREESThere are many contexts in which the emotions, and the smart use of them, are necessary for the full development of the person. But without a doubt, and relative to the field in which we find ourselves, emotional competencies play a very important role in education. We must bear in mind that emotions have a very important role in learning and is currently considered that the cognitive configures the affective and emotional the cognitive. Learn how influences the affective domain in university students and teachers in initial training is a matter of great importance to teacher training and the education system Through the use of a quantitative method, and more particularly of a cross-sectional design, the objective our study was to evaluate the level of self-efficacy in a sample of 358 students of the Grade of Elementary Master and Science Grades of the University of Extremadura by adaptation of Sanjuan, Perez and Bermudez (2000) of the scale of General self-efficacy of Baessler and Schwarzer (1996). The results confirm that there were significant differences in self-efficacy level according to the degree in which it students are enrolled.Keywords: self-efficacy, emotions, university students, initial teacher education, teaching science.Resumen.Son numerosos los contextos en los que las emociones, y el uso inteligente de las mismas, son necesarias para el desarrollo íntegro de la persona. Pero sin duda alguna, y en relación al campo en el que nosotros nos encontramos, las competencias emocionales juegan un papel muy importante en la educación. Debemos tener en cuenta que las emociones tienen un papel muy importante en el aprendizaje y actualmente se considera que lo cognitivo configura lo afectivo y lo afectivo lo cognitivo. Conocer cómo influye el dominio afectivo en los estudiantes universitarios y en el profesorado en formación inicial es un tema de gran importancia para la formación docente y el sistema educativo. Mediante una metodología cuantitativa, y más concretamente a partir de un diseño transversal, en nuestra investigación se pretende evaluar el nivel de autoeficacia en una muestra constituida por 358 estudiantes del Grado de Maestro en Educación y Grados en Ciencias de la Universidad de Extremadura mediante adaptación de Sanjuán, Pérez y Bermúdez (2000) de la Escala de Autoeficacia General de Baessler y Schwarzer (1996). Los resultados obtenidos permitieron afirmar que existen diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el nivel autoeficacia según el grado en el que se encuentran matriculados los estudiantes universitarios.Palabras clave: autoeficacia, emociones, estudiantes universitarios, maestros en formación inicial, enseñanza de las ciencias.
