<span style="font-family: MeliorLTCE; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: MeliorLTCE; font-size: x-small;"><p>The article investigates the implementation of the workplace health project ‘Body and Bureau’ at the Department of Development at the Copenhagen University Hospital. The project attempted to intervene with the daily routines of staff members, who were believed to be bodily inactive while performing their daily tasks. In seeking to add movement and exercise to the daily routines of staff members, ‘Body &amp; Bureau’ was understood to promote a new pattern of behaviour in the office that would help avoiding life style conditions such as overweight, hypertension, pre-diabetes and increased levels of cholesterol, generally considered to expose office workers to increased risks of poor health. The article addresses the ways in which the bodies of staff members were objectified by the project and the ways in which it influenced their everyday lives, and how it became a catalyst for new modalities of social relations within the office. Subsequent to individual health tests being performed, a number of staff members were classified as being overweight, which led them to form what they ironically dubbed ‘The Group of</p></span></span><span style="font-family: MeliorLTCE; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: MeliorLTCE; font-size: x-small;">Mourners’ in order to cope with their sense of sadness. About one month later, however, the group decided to become ‘The Group of Enthusiasts’, thereby taking on the tasks of changing the way they perceived of themselves and developing into an exercise support group. While the project had set out to promote movement as integral to the work routines, which was set against an undesirable notion of exercise for its own sake, the staff members ended up by pursuing the latter rather than the former. While the authors acknowledge the importance of tracing how bodies become objects of political power in the Foucauldian sense, they underscore that the nitty-gritty details of how projects play out in local social worlds such as the Development Department will eventually shape the trajectory of the intervention. Taking their cue from anthropologists Nancy Schepher-Hughes and Margaret Lock, the authors argue that a good starting point for the analysis of how a bodily objectifying project like that of ‘Body &amp; Bureau’ intervenes in the social reality of an office is to pay equal attention to the political body, the individual body, and the social body. Similarly, these three perspectives on the body are used to explain how the state sponsored intervention politicizes the body of office workers, which leads to the testing and measuring of individual bodies, which finally becomes a collectivizing moment for staff members, because they eventually chose to socialize around their common condition of overweight, thereby producing new ways of relation in the office. The article thus concludes that although political power is definitely exercised in health promotion schemes, it is important not to forget the agency exercised by the people who make up the objects of such intervention.</span></span>

ABSTRACT We aimed to understand the expectations of families about a Psychiatric Inpatient Unit in the perspective of Alfred Schutz's phenomenological sociology. This is a qualitative and phenomenological research, with families of patients at a psychiatric inpatient unit of a university hospital in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Data were collected through phenomenological interviews, and the analysis was constructed in the light of phenomenological sociology. The results show that the expectations of the family in the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit are related to the interpretation and experiences they have in the world of everyday life; that these expectations should be valued in patient and family care; and that they may integrate the family in care for the patient. We hope to contribute so that professionals and managers reflect about the importance of understanding the expectations of families on a Unit, aiming to implement more effective health actions, based on the social relations among the subjects.

This research and community engagement investigates an ancient Balinese ritual known as Sang Hyang Dedari. The dance is interrelated to an agricultural aspect of the traditional Balinese living. As the Balinese struggle to maintain their values from the constant threat of modernization and industrialization, this dance reveals the powerful impact of creating an awareness of socio-ecological equilibrium. The effort made by the villagers of Geriana Kauh, Karangasem, displays how local community rebuilds its environment based on their traditional ecological value. Analyzing Sang Hyang Dedari dance through phenomenological approach, thus, it can be discovered how the ritual sustains the social relations. The bodies of the dancers are the center of an elaborate nexus between people, nature and god. To understand how the dualism of sacred and profane bodies, this research utilizes the body theory by Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The importance of phenomenology as a theory relates to the understanding on how the ritual works as an event in its totality. Understanding the unity between the presence of the divine, nature and human. The output of this research and community engagement is a museum built in cooperation between University of Indonesia with the villagers of Geriana Kauh, Karangasem. As the performance and knowledge about Sang Hyang Dedari appeared to be scarce, this museum is a form of collaboration to retrace the history of Sang Hyang Dedari ritual, in an attempt to conserve the ancient knowledge.

This chapter considers the ways in which Khatibi’s practices of reading contribute to theories of meaning through his thinking on the deciphering of signs and symbols and of making sense of the world, and of the worlds of the text, in their multifaceted forms. It takes as its starting point what Khatibi terms, in his introductory essay ‘Le Cristal du Texte’ in La Bessure du Nom propre, ‘l’intersémiotique’, migrant signs which move between one sign system and another. Khatibi takes as his own project examples from semiotic systems found within Arabic and Islamic cultures, from both popular culture, such as the tattoo, to calligraphy and the language of the Koran, from the body to the text and beyond – including storytelling, mosaics, urban space, textiles. His readings reveal the intersemiotic and polysemic meanings created in the movements of these migrant signs between their sign systems. For Khatibi, this ‘infinity’ of the ‘text’ is linked also to a mobile and migrant identity refracted in the multifaceted surfaces of the crystal (hence the title of the essay – ‘Le Cristal du Texte’) rather than in one reflection as in a mirror. Moving from these concerns of Khatibi with which he develops his radical theory of the sign, of the word and of writing, the chapter goes on to propose new readings of a selection of other writers with a shared, but varied, relationship to their Islamic heritage. These are writers working with and through that heritage – and importantly, as for Khatibi, including the Sufi heritage – and whose writing is also resonant with Khatibi’s intersemiotic theoretical and cultural project concerned with the individual and the collective, the historical and the contemporary, the political, the social and the linguistic.

This article responds to Peck’s call for a heterodox economic analysis of markets that is sensitive to their sociality and spatiality with Polanyi’s work as a starting point. It is argued that while Polanyi’s concept of the socially embedded economy offers a useful heuristic for apprehending the social foundations of economic activity, his analysis exhibits ‘market fetishism’ – a tendency to treat markets as things in and of themselves, without a proper appreciation of their inherently social foundations – and that this is reflected in broader scholarly discourses with respect to markets. Thus, it is argued, we need to augment Polanyi’s framework with other heterodox economic insights. The article outlines a four-step approach to ‘de-fetishizing’ markets. First, the article foregrounds the specifically capitalist nature of the global economy, and the ‘unique system of market dependence’ to which capitalist social relations give rise. Second, it is argued that de-fetishizing markets requires that an agent-centred approach be adopted. Rather than viewing markets as ‘things’ it is argued that they are most usefully understood as the interactions between agents, the most significant of which, within the contemporary global economy, is the large capitalist firm. Third, the interaction between such agents is structured by pervasive frameworks of rules. Fourth, it is argued that markets are inherently spatial phenomena. They are spatially constituted and contribute to the production of space.

In this chapter, the body is re-envisioned as a cybernetic organism, and new types of exchange of information, matter, and energy are anaylsed. Through the cybernetic understanding of a human being as a machine system, it is possible for man to modify and replace lost organs or functions and create a partially artificial being. When the body becomes a scientific and technological creation and real relationships become a cyborg prosthesis of the non-human, the body and the social relations become a problem of cybernetic functioning.

Objetivo: Analizar la somnolencia diurna excesiva y los efectos del trabajo en la salud de trabajadores de enfermería actuantes em la Unidad de Recuperación Post-Anestésica.Método: Estudio transversal, realizado con 39 trabajadores de enfermería de una Unidad de Recuperación Post-Anestésica de un Hospital Universitario. Los instrumentos de recolección de datos fueron el cuestionario de caracterización sociolaboral, la Escala de Somnolencia de Epworth y la Escala de Evaluación de los Daños Relacionados al Trabajo. Los datos fueron analizados con ayuda de Predictive Analytics Software, de la SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), a través de pruebas estadísticas.Resultados: Indican que los daños físicos presentaron mayor promedio (2,33 ± 1,15), predominando dolores en el cuerpo, espalda y piernas, dicho una clasificación grave, lo cual potencia el sufrimiento en el trabajo. En cuanto a la presencia de somnolencia diurna excesiva, el 41% de los trabajadores la presentaron. No se identificó asociación significativa entre la somnolencia diurna excesiva y los efectos del trabajo en la salud de trabajadores de enfermería.Conclusión: Este estudio podrá auxiliar en la planificación de acciones con el objetivo de minimizar los daños relacionados al trabajo y promover la salud del trabajador. Oliver Pye: For a labour turn in the environmental justice movement. Struggles over the social relations of nature and strategies for social-ecological transformation. This article discusses struggles in the social relations of nature and how these relate to strategies of socialecological transformation and calls for a labour turn in the environmental and climate justice movement. Taking the rapid changes to the social-ecological landscape of the Kapuas River in Indonesia as a starting point, it shows how this “accumulation by dispossession” is connected to a “corporate food regime” that is embedded within global “postfordist relations of nature”. I then argue that the global production networks linking appropriation to exploitation should themselves be viewed as alienated steps in the social metabolism with nature. Struggles against accumulation by dispossession need to connect to the labour movement, which holds the key to overcome the alienated work that lies at the heart of society’s alienation with nature.

<p>Following calls from both disability studies and anthropology to provide ethnographic accounts of disability, this thesis presents the narratives of nine people living with disability, focusing on what disability means to them, how it is incorporated into their identities, and how it shapes their lived experiences. While accounts of disability from disability studies often focus on the social model of disability (Shakespeare 2006) and emphasise social stigma and oppression (Goffman 1967, Susman 1994), anthropological accounts often emphasise the suffering and search for cures (Rapp and Ginsburg 2012) that is assumed to accompany disability. Both approaches have their benefits, but neither pay particularly close attention to the personal experiences of individuals, on their own terms.  By taking elements from both disciplines, this thesis aims to present a balanced view that emphasises the lived experiences of individuals with disability, and uses these experiences as a starting point for wider social analysis. The primary focus of this thesis is understanding how disability shapes an individual’s identity: what physical, emotional, and social factors influence how these people are perceived – by themselves and others? Through my participants’ narratives I explore how understandings of normal bodies and normal lives influence their sense of personhood, and investigate the role of stigma in mediating social encounters and self-concepts. Furthermore, I undertake a novel study of the role of technology in the lives of people living with disability. My work explores how both assistive and non-assistive (‘general’) technologies are perceived and utilised by my participants in ways that effect not just the physical experience of disability, but also social perceptions and personal understandings of the body/self.  I argue that although the social model of disability is an excellent analytical tool, and one which has provided tangible benefits for disabled people, its political nature can sometimes lead to a homogenisation of disabled experiences; something which this thesis is intended to remedy by providing ethnographic narratives of disability, grounded in the embodied experiences of individuals.</p>

AbstractBeyond the physical structures that contain daily routines, urban city dwellers repeatedly encounter strangers that similarly shape their environments. Familiar strangers are neither formal acquaintances nor completely anonymous faces in daily urban life. Due to data limitations, there is a lack of research focused on uncovering the structure of the “Familiar Stranger” phenomenon at a large scale while simultaneously investigating the social relationships between such strangers. Using countrywide mobile phone records from Andorra, we empirically show the existence of such a phenomenon as well as details concerning these strangers’ relative social relations. To understand the social and spatial components of familiar strangers more deeply, we study the temporal regularity and spatial structure of collective urban mobility to shed light on the mechanisms that guide these interactions. Furthermore, we explore the relationship between social distances and the number of encounters to show that more significant physical encounters correspond to a shorter social distance. Understanding these social and physical networks has essential implications for epidemics spreading, urban planning, and information diffusion.
