Since MTV and MuchMusic were launched in 1981 and 1984 respectively, both stations have been commended for their racially diverse video repertoires. As Homi Bhabha has observed, however, "multicultural" practices that encourage diversity should also be examined for simultaneous modes of containment and control (Bhabha, "The Third Space," 208). This analysis of both stations' video programming and rotation schedules from late 1995 suggests that as they expanded their repertories they established unique, carefully controlled, nationally-inflected relationships between dominant and marginalized musical traditions. Using examples by Euro-American and African diasporic performers, I explore how multiculturalism appears to be "celebrated" on MuchMusic and MTV while Western and non-Western representations are negotiated such that ethnocentric norms, which pervade North American cultural media, are never contested.

One of the significant points in post-colonial literature is identity issues. The analysis of these identity issues should be focused not only on the colonized character but also the colonialist. It is obvious why post-colonial scholars are concerned with the colonized as they are the victims of colonialism. However, the colonizer must also face complex issues of identity when arriving in the colonial place. The purpose of this article is to examine the identity issues undergone by Joshua, the colonial subject, and by Clive, the colonizer, with reference to Cloud Nine by Caryl Churchill in the colonial period. The concept of hybridity by Homi Bhabha can explain the issue of Joshua’s identity since he has “double” portrays of the identity as legacy of colonialism. Bhabha created the terms the “third space” or the “in-between” to describe the condition of the colonized people. Clive as the colonizer used to be a person without particular authority in his own country before arriving to the colonial land. Suddenly, his identity has shifted into someone who has privileges and authority. The colonizer’s identity is not complete without the colonized. The colonized and the colonizer depend on each other. The colonized and the colonizer’s identities will be fragmented if one of them is missing.

Can we effectively integrate Deaf students into our post-secondary classes before recognizing and listening to them? Studies indicate that Deaf students continue to struggle, be silenced, and experience isolation when mainstreamed. Deaf students, or second-language students, inevitably develop new identities once included; however, we cannot justly ask that they abandon their own cultural identities, nor ignore that they have their own cultural and individual identities. This paper draws on the literary theorist Homi Bhabha, specifically his notion of the “third space.” I propose that as educators we enter and create this space for our students and begin listening to them using a “third ear” so as to enable the surfacing of their cultural identities in hopes of countering their struggles, perpetual silencing, and isolation. The essay focuses largely on the implementation of the third ear and third space by programs found in the humanities.

Abstract In recent years, we have noticed in many research areas a growing interest in the translation paradigm. In this article we discuss the theory of “cultural translation”, developed by Homi Bhabha in the context of postcolonial studies, and his concept of “Third Space” (2007). This theory aims to describe the different processes at play in the creation of identity within a space in which several cultures coexist. According to Bhabha, “the Third Space, though unrepresentable in itself, constitutes the discursive conditions of enunciation that ensure that the meaning and symbols of culture have no primordial unity or fixity; even the same signs can be appropriated, translated, rehistorised and read anew”. In this article, we aim to examine to what extent this theory can be applied to translation, especially to legal translation. The concepts of “Third Space” and hybridity developed by Bhabha undoubtedly have a certain appeal for the translator. However, from the methodological point of view other approaches seem to allow for a better understanding of the translation aspects raised by Bhabha in his theory. We therefore provide an interesting analysis of the “Third Space” based on the concept of interval by Cassin (Éloge de la traduction. Compliquer l’universel, Fayard, Paris, 2016), which is defined as a complex zone of interactions and interferences. This analysis is completed by examining the concept of frontiers by Moréteau (Revue internationale de droit comparé 4(61):695–713, 2009. DOI: 10.3406/ridc.2009.19911) which is implicitly present in the concept of interval. In order to analyse the concept of hybridity, the methodological framework of transdifference developed by Srubar (Kultur und Semantik, VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, Wiesbaden, 2009) can also be used.

In association with different disciplines, the conceptualization of the third space with different jargons and theoretical tropes has evolved historically. However, this article makes a brief review about the concept of the third space in relation with formation of human subjectivities. Particularly, the ideas of Arnold Van Gennep, Victor Turner, Edward Burghardt DuBois, Gloria Anzaldua and Homi Bhabha are reviewed briefly. In fact, observing the cultural rituals and how they transform human subjectivities, Gennep locates the transitory space which is crucial informing changing roles and identities of human beings. From cultural rituals, Turner takes up this idea in the process of social changes. He identifies this space in between the interaction of structured and anti structured social roles. Likewise, DuBois expands this idea in examining subjectivities of Black people. But, Anzaldua incorporates all people and formation of their identities in her analysis. Multiple factors and allegiances are responsible in forming human identities in her concept. Similarly, Bhabha concentrates in colonial and post colonial context and analyzes how the cultural interactions of colonized and colonizer deconstruct the bipolar concept of cultural identities and give birth of a new form of identities in the hybrid space of cultural interaction. Bhabha’s conceptualization is relevant in conceptualizing immigrants’ cultural identities in diaspora.

In this interesting book, Aversion and Desire: Negotiating Muslim FemaleIdentity in the Diaspora, Shanaz Khan challenges us to rethink static andfixed conceptions of Muslim women. She also points out that because minority identities are fixed, women who happen to be Muslim are oftenforced to enter social and political spaces as Muslim women. Such restraintsmake it almost impossible to create a place for progressive politics, change,and fluid identities. As an anthropologist and observer, Khan pinpoints andfocuses our attention on the situation currently facing Muslim women in theWest, particularly in Canada. As a Muslim and a woman, she has located aspace in which progressive politics and change may take place.Borrowing mainly from the work of Homi Bhabha, Khan calls for movingfrom fixed and static notions of Muslim women into what Bhabha refersto as the “third space,” from which hybrid identities can be constructed. Theauthor argues that both Islam and Orientalism, the two dominant discoursesfrom which ideas about Muslim women have been and are still articulated,have led to essentializing and idealizing our images of the Muslim woman.This is also true of feminism, which sees specific aspects of Islamic practiceas oppressive to women and, therefore, the target of change; of colonialismand postcolonialism, which reinforce those stereotypes influenced by unequalpower relationships between Euro-American and Muslim societiesand that have an imperial history currently embedded in the neocolonialforms of control of other societies; and multiculturalism, which views thecultures and religions of nonwhite people as homogenous, unchanging, andunconnected to any social, political, and historical reality. All of these lensesthrough which the “others” are viewed contribute to this essentialization.Moving beyond an extremely useful theoretical discussion structured bythe concept of hybridized identities in the third space, Khan then incorporatesa series of case studies that are categorized in a manner designed to showcasea variety of Muslim women’s attempts to construct an identity, live life, andchallenge the norms of both the wider society and of the Muslim communitiesin which they live. This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of applying Demonstration Method on students’ achievement in speaking skill. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade XII, Vocational High School (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan: SMK), which consisted of 79 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was speaking test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula. The result of the reliability was 0.7, and it was found that the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant m = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 77, t-observed value 8.9 > t-table value 1.99. The findings indicate that using Demonstration Method significantly affected the students’ achievement in speaking skill. So, English teachers are suggested to use Demonstration Method in order to improve students’ achievement in speaking skill.

The article presents the results of mathematical experiments with the system «Social potential of childhood in the Russian regions». In the structure of system divided into three subsystems – the «Reproduction of children in the region», «Children’s health» and «Education of children», for each defined its target factor (output parameter). The groups of infrastructure factors (education, health, culture and sport, transport), socio-economic, territorial-settlement, demographic and en-vironmental factors are designated as the factors that control the system (input parameters). The aim of the study is to build a model îf «Social potential of childhood in the Russian regions», as well as to conduct experiments to find the optimal ratio of the values of target and control factors. Three waves of experiments were conducted. The first wave is related to the analysis of the dynam-ics of indicators for 6 years. The second – with the selection of optimal values of control factors at fixed ideal values of target factors. The third wave allowed us to calculate the values of the target factors based on the selected optimal values of the control factors of the previous wave.

This chapter summarizes the advancement of duoethnography throughout its fifteen-year history, employing examples from a variety of topics in education and social justice to provide a wide range of approaches that one may take when conducting a duoethnography. A checklist articulates what its cofounders consider the core elements of duoethnographies, additional features that may or may not be employed and how some studies purporting to be duoethnographies may not be so. The chapter indicates connections between duoethnography and a number of methodological concepts including the third space, the problematics of representation, feminist inquiry, and critical theory using published examples by several duoethnographers.

Pseudococcus calceolariae, the citrophilous mealybug, is a species of economic importance. Mating disruption (MD) is a potential control tool. During 2017–2020, trials were conducted to evaluate the potential of P. calceolariae MD in an apple and a tangerine orchard. Two pheromone doses, 6.32 g/ha (2017–2018) and 9.45 g/ha (2019–2020), were tested. The intermediate season (2018–2019) was evaluated without pheromone renewal to study the persistence of the pheromone effect. Male captures in pheromone traps, mealybug population/plant, percentage of infested fruit at harvest and mating disruption index (MDI) were recorded regularly. In both orchards, in the first season, male captures were significantly lower in MD plots compared to control plots, with an MDI > 94% in the first month after pheromone deployment. During the second season, significantly lower male captures in MD plots were still observed, with an average MDI of 80%. At the third season, male captures were again significant lower in MD than control plots shortly after pheromone applications. In both orchards, population by visual inspection and infested fruits were very low, without differences between MD and control plots. These results show the potential use of mating disruption for the control of P. calceolariae.
