The aim of the research was to analyse the state of nutrition in pre-school children. The sample enrolled 325 children, among which 196 boys and 129 girls. There was measuring in May 2015. The data were analysed by descriptive statistics methods and multivariate (MANOVA) variance analyses for p≤0.05. It was established that boys and girls of pre-school age significantly differ in statistical terms as far as nutrition state is concerned. Univaried (ANOVA) variance analyses pointed to differences also in following variables Body Mass, Ideal Body Mass and Body Mass Index in favor of girls and Relative Body Mass in favor of boys. The percentage of undernourished children was extremely high (31.76%), at the same time there were 13.54% of overweight children. 54.70% of children were found to be of normal nutritional status.

AbstractThe number of people with excess weight increases every year. Overweight and obesity in childhood can cause several chronic diseases in adulthood. Children with excess body mass develop more morphological and functional changes, including pulmonary functions. One of the common methods to assess lung function is spirometry. This method is a challenge in assessing lung function for pre-school age children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between lung vital capacity and body mass index for the pre-school children aged 3–7 years in Rīga. In total 995 pre-school children were included in the study. An informative consent and questionnaire about the development of each individual child was filled in by parents. Several measurements were performed, including height, body mass, and lung vital capacity. This is the first study in Latvia where several morphologic and somatometric measurements were determined in children of pre-school age. There was a positive and statistically significant correlation between lung vital capacity and body height, mass, and chest circumference. The correlation between lung vital capacity and body mass index was not statistically significant. The main results do not differ from the results of similar studies in other countries. The obtained results will help to create a standard of morphological and somatometric parameters in pre-school aged children in Rīga region.

<p>This cross sectional study was carried out to compare nutritional status amongst children of 14- 16 years age of three different sets of schools. Study was conducted at Private High School Campus (PHSC) without mid day meal programme, Govt. High School Hebbal (GHSH) with ISCKON mid day meal programme and Govt. High School Bashettahalli (GHSB) Doddaballapur, with Govt. mid day meal. Height, weight and body mass index (BMI) were measured. When height and weight of the study subjects compared with 50<sup>th</sup> percentile values of IAP standards, majority of the subjects with no midday meal programme were found to have better height (18.5%) compared to with MDM subjects. Whereas, majority of the subjects in PHSC (without MDM) and GHSH (with ISCKON MDM) were found to have on par results for weight at 18.75 and 19.18 per cent respectively. Comparison of BMI with 50<sup>th</sup> percentile values of WHO standards projected that majority of the PHSC (no MDM) subjects (56.2%) had normal BMI as compared to with MDM subjects as compared to other two school</p>

244 Australian schoolchildren aged between 8 and 12 years indicated their current and ideal body sizes by means of Collins' pictorial figures. Children's height and weight were also measured. Body-mass indices were calculated from these data, and percentile ranks estimated according to international reference data. Consistent with Collins' findings, 39% of girls and 26% of boys wanted to be thinner than they perceived themselves to be; however, this desire was strongly related to actual body size so the percentages were very different for weight categories established on the basis of Body Mass Index. In the overweight quartile, 76% of girls and 56% of boys wanted to be thinner, whereas in the underweight quartile only 10% of girls and no boys wanted to be thinner. The response of overweight children may be sensible, but the desire of some underweight girls to be even thinner is of concern. Some recent literature suggests that underweight individuals tend to overestimate their body sizes. About a half of our underweight children slightly overestimated their body sizes but only one child overestimated grossly.

Breakfast is an activity of eating and drinking between waking up to 9 am to fulfill some of the daily nutritional needs(15-30% nutritional needs). The benefits of breakfast are maintaining an ideal body weight because breakfast canreduce the amount of food you eat throughout the day. The purpose of this study was to find out the description ofbreakfast and Body Mass Index (BMI) in students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Riau in 2017. This researchwas descriptive study with 121 samples. The results showed 16.3% obese I and 8.1% obese II. Respondents with goodbreakfast calories tend to have good nutritional status of 50.0%.

A community-based cross-sectional study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of undernutrition using body mass index (BMI) among 2–6-year Santal preschool children of Purulia District, West Bengal, India. A total of 251 (116 boys and 135 girls) children from 12 villages were measured. Commonly used indicators, that is, weight, height, and BMI, were used to evaluate the nutritional status. More boys (59.5%) than girls (53.3%), based on BMI, were undernourished. Significant age differences in weight (F=44.29∗∗∗; df=3), height (F=58.48∗∗∗; df=3), and BMI (F=3.52∗∗∗; df=3) among boys were observed. Similarly, significant differences between ages in mean weight (F=56.27∗∗∗; df=3), height (F=64.76∗∗∗; df=3), and BMI (F=2.62∗∗∗; df=3) were observed among the girls. The present study revealed that the nutritional status of the preschool children of Santal tribal community of these villages was poor with very high rate of thinness in boys and girls (59.5% and 53.3%, resp.).
