Abstract. In the work presented an analysis was performed of the genetic values of conformation traits in cows and their relations with the genetic value of dairy traits, basing on dairy performance (milk, fat and protein yield) and conformation data, obtained for Polish Holstein-Friesian cows of the Black-and-White variety, born between year 2001 and 2004, and maintained in 21 herds in the region of Wielkopolska (central Poland). The genetic values for the data analysed were estimated using the BLUP method and a mixed model. For the traits analysed a genetic trend was estimated as well as genetic correlations between the dairy and conformation traits. The population analysed was divided depending on year of birth and production level. The results obtained show a systematic increase in the traits analysed (positive genetic trends), both for the dairy and for conformation traits (with the exception of temperament). The highest genetic correlations between dairy and conformation traits were obtained for the udder, temperament and dairy type, while the lowest for height at sacrum and calibre. The analysis of the genetic value of conformation traits in cows of different dairy production genetic values indicated that the highest results were obtained for the group of animals with the highest genetic dairy production value. In turn, the analysis of the genetic value of traits of cows born in different years did not show statistically significant differences, with the exception of height in the youngest group.

The correlation between polymorphisms in the IGF-1 gene and production traits in beef cattle is well known. The effect of insulin-like growth factor on the value of milk traits is not yet adequately understood. The aim of the study was to attempt to describe the effect of IGF-1/SnaBI substitution on selected milk performance parameters of the Black-and-White variety of Holstein-Friesian cows. Three genotypes were identified: CC, CT and TT. The results showed a correlation between IGF-1/SnaBI genotypes and milk yield (highest for CC homozygotes and lowest for CT heterozygotes). No relationship could be established between the genotype and the quality characteristics of milk.

The objectives of this study were (1) to examine different shapes of lactation curves for milk, fat, protein and lactose yields and urea content in milk fitted by the Wilmink function using the test-day (TD) records and (2) to find the function that best describes test-day records beyond 305 days in milk (DIM) for Polish Holstein–Friesian cows. The data were 6,955,768 TD records from the 702,830 first six lactations of 284,193 Polish Holstein–Friesian cows. Cows calved in 19,102 herds between 2001 and 2018. The following functions were fitted to TD data from each lactation: (1) Wilmink model fitted to the whole lactation, (2) Wilmink model fitted to TD records from 5 to 305 DIM and linear function fitted to TD records from 306 to 400 DIM, (3) Wilmink model fitted to TD records from 5 to 305 DIM and squared function fitted to TD records from 306 to 400 DIM. The present study showed that urea content in milk was modelled slightly worse than other milk traits. The results suggested that the course of lactation could be successfully modelled by a nonlinear model, for example, the Wilmink function, for up to 305 DIM, and by the linear or squared function afterwards.

Abstract. The investigations included total 515 milk samples which were collected from 309 cows of the main dairy cows’ breeds used in Poland, i.e. Polish Holstein-Friesian Black-White variety (n=150), Polish Holstein-Friesian Red-White variety (n=77) and Simmental (n=82). There was determined a content of fat, protein and dry matter, a share of fat globules ranging in size, i.e. <6 μm, 6-10 μm and >10 μm as well as a fatty acids profile. It was shown that milk gained from Holstein-Friesian cows was characterized with a higher level of fat dispersion (over 70 % globules of <6 μm diameter and a higher percentage of short- and long-chain fatty acids (ca. 19 %). The Simmentalers’ milk had a higher protein : fat ratio (about 0.89), a lower fat dispersion level (8.21 % globules of >10 μm diameter) and the highest share of the polyunsaturated fatty acids (3.28 %). Cows nutrition included pasture forage during summer (independently on the breed) had a significant influence (P≤0.01) on increased polyunsaturated fatty acids percentage (mean by 0.51 %). The winter milk, however, showed a significantly higher content of dry matter, fat and protein as well as a higher share of big-sized milk globules.

Abstract. The study was carried out on 658 Polish Holstein Friesian cows. A transversion of A→C in the P1 promoter region of bovine IGF1 gene at position 977 bp upstream from the start codon in exon 1 was identified using ACRS-PCR method. Reverse primer introduced an artificial TasI restriction site. Three genotypes (AA, AC, CC) were found in the analysed herd of dairy cows occurred with a frequency of 0.766, 0.213 and 0.021, respectively. In the presented study, the statistically significant differences between individuals of different IGF1/TasI genotypes were found in milk, fat and protein yield. In the 2nd and 3rd lactations, the cows carrying the CC genotype produced more milk than the AA individuals (P≤0.05). In the case of protein and fat yield, similar tendencies were observed.

The conducted research was aimed at constructing equations of selection index that would be used in the selection of the Holstein-Friesian breed animals in Serbia. The construction of the selection index includes the most important milk traits observed in standard lactation: milk yield (MY305), milk fat content (% MF305) and protein content (% MP305). The variance and covariance necessary for the construction of selection index are calculated using the mixed model by the method of least squares. The economic value of traits is expressed as a ratio of relative changes in costs per unit of traits included in the selection index. Livestock included in the research produced, in the first standard lactation, an average of 7681 kg of milk with 3.58% milk fat and 3.28% protein. The equation of the selection index presented in the paper is selected from the group of equations of selection index, as an equation with the highest correlation between the equation and the aggregate genotype, which amounted to 0.2156.

Investigation of the production capacity of cattle for the purpose of increase of milk and milk fat production, as well as number of calves, greatly depends on phenotypic and genetic variability, heritability and correlation between desired traits, and on production level in the population. This research included 3.461 first calving cows of Simmental breed under control and reared on farms of individual agricultural producers on the territory of Republic of Serbia. Genetic correlations were calculated using equation of mixed model which included the effect of bull-sire, breeding region, year and season of calving: Yijklm = ? + Bi + Rj + Gk + Sl + eijklm. Coefficients of genetic correlation between service period and milk traits were following: duration of lactation 0,239, milk yield 0,089, percentage of milk fat 0,095, quantity of milk fat 0,105 and yield of 4%FCM 0,099. Correlation between service period and age at calving was 0,535. Genetic correlation between age at calving and milk traits was following: duration of lactation 0,245, production of milk 0,003, percentage of milk fat 0,531, quantity of milk fat 0,082 and production of 4%FCM 0,050.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is an important enzyme, which is one of the components of the antibacterial system in neutrophils and monocytes. MPO participates in the inflammatory response in multiple locations in the body, including the mammary glands. As a result of the activity of MPO, many oxidising compounds as well as reactive oxygen species are generated. It seems that myeloperoxidase may be a marker linking inflammation processes and oxidative stress. So far, there are no literature data on the association between the MPO gene polymorphism and the antioxidant properties of milk. The aim of the study was to analyse the effect of g.9476869G > A polymorphism of myeloperoxidase (MPO) gene and age of cows on the antioxidant activity of milk and other milk traits in Polish Holstein-Friesian cows. Polymorphism of MPO gene was identified by the PCR-RFLP method using the HphI endonuclease. The total antioxidant capacity of milk samples was measured by the Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC) method. It was found that the GG genotype was the most frequent (0·606). The genotype at the tested MPO locus and the age of the animals affected the antioxidant activity of milk. Milk from cows with the GA genotype was characterised by a significantly higher antioxidant activity than milk from cows with the GG genotype (P< 0·0001). The analysis of interaction showed that cows with the GA genotype and older than 6·5 years produced milk with a significantly higher antioxidant activity compared with younger cows with the same genotype (P< 0·0001), as well as cows with the GG genotype of all ages (P< 0·0001).

Abstract. A multi-trait repeatability animal model under restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and Bayesian methods was used to estimate genetic parameters of milk, fat, and protein yields in Tunisian Holstein cows. The estimates of heritability for milk, fat, and protein yields from the REML procedure were 0.21 ± 0.05, 0.159 ± 0.04, and 0.158 ± 0.04, respectively. The corresponding results from the Bayesian procedure were 0.273 ± 0.02, 0.198 ± 0.01, and 0.187 ± 0.01. Heritability estimates tended to be larger via the Bayesian than those obtained by the REML method. Genetic and permanent environmental variances estimated by REML were smaller than those obtained by the Bayesian analysis. Inversely, REML estimates of the residual variances were larger than Bayesian estimates. Genetic and permanent correlation estimates were on the other hand comparable by both REML and Bayesian methods with permanent environmental being larger than genetic correlations. Results from this study confirm previous reports on genetic parameters for milk traits in Tunisian Holsteins and suggest that a multi-trait approach can be an alternative for implementing a routine genetic evaluation of the Tunisian dairy cattle population.

Objective of this study was to analyze the effect of the dairy farm on milk traits of cows in Vojvodina. The research was carried out on small farms with 10 to 20 cows, medium farms with 20 to 50 cows, and large farms with over 50 dairy cows. The study included registered animals of Simmental (SM) and Holstein-Friesian breed (HF; including Red Holstein) in the first lactation for traits of milk yield and yield and content of milk fat. Total of 1323 first lactations were analyzed. The average milk yield (both breeds) in the first lactation of 305 days was 6295 kg of milk with 234,3 kg of milk fat and average milk fat content of 3,74%. Milk performance of cows varied significantly (CV=22,9% and SD=1447,8), as well as milk fat yield (CV=21,6% and SD=50,8). Large farms produced in average 6534 kg of milk, medium farms 6347kg and small farms 4717kg. Size of the farm exhibited significantly high effect on all observed traits, and the tendency was that farms with higher number of animals realize also higher average of production. Farm management and various breeding-zootechnical conditions present on farms had significant effect on milk performance of cows.

Two experiments were undertaken to determine the effect of timing of protein supplementation on performance of grazing, lactating Holstein–Friesian cows fed maize silage and grain-based concentrate. In experiment 1, 36 cows were fed 0.8 kg DM/day of solvent-extracted cottonseed meal (CSM) either as 1 meal at 1200 hours with maize silage (CSM 1200) or at 1530 hours with concentrate (CSM 1530), or in 2 meals at 0600 and 1530 hours with concentrate (CSM 600 + 1530). In experiment 2, 36 cows were either fed no CSM (control) or fed 1.0 kg DM/day as either CSM 1200 or CSM 600 + 1530. In experiment 1, daily yields of 4% fat-corrected milk (FCM) and milk fat for CSM 600 + 1530 were significantly higher than for CSM 1530 with respective means of 22.8 v. 20.7 L and 895 v. 804 g. Daily yields of FCM and milk fat for CSM 1200 were intermediate (21.7 L and 841 g/cow, respectively). A similar trend for daily protein yield per cow was noted (712, 695 and 666 g for CSM 600 + 1530, 1200 and 1530, respectively). In experiment 2, milk yield differed numerically between CSM 600 + 1530 and other treatments, with means (± s.e.d.) of 24.7 ± 0.78, 22.9 ± 0.78 and 22.9 ± 0.78 L/cow.day for CSM 600 + 1530, CSM 1200 and control, respectively. Mean (± s.e.d.) net energy requirements for milk production and liveweight change tended to be lower for the control (68 ± 3.6 MJ/cow.day) as opposed to CSM 600 + 1530 (79 ± 3.6 MJ/cow.day) and CSM 1200 (76 ± 3.6 MJ/cow.day). Cumulative time where rumen degradable nitrogen:rumen degradable dry matter was less than 22 g/kg were 2, 2 and 3 h for CSM 600 + 1530, CSM 1200 and CSM 1530, respectively, in experiment 1, and 6, 4 and 2 h for the control, 1200 and CSM 600 + 1530, respectively, in experiment 2. No differences in rumen ammonia-N concentrations were noted between treatments in experiment 1. In experiment 2, a significantly lower mean (± s.e.d.) rumen ammonia-N concentration was recorded for the control at 1530 hours (62 ± 14.1 mg/dL) in comparison to CSM 600 + 1530 (114 ± 14.1 mg/dL) and CSM 1200 (119 ± 14.1 mg/dL). These experiments show that for grazing dairy cows supplemented with maize silage and grain-based concentrate, feeding a daily aliquot of CSM as 2 meals at 0600 and 1530 hours rather than 1 meal at 1200 or 1530 hours improves milk production.
