SummaryA recent study suggests that protein S deficiency is not a risk factor for venous thrombosis. Since this unexpected finding would have important clinical implications if confirmed, we performed a case-control study with the aim to determine the prevalence of protein S deficiency in patients with thrombosis and in healthy individuals taken from the general population and the relative risk of thrombosis in protein S-deficient patients. Free protein S concentration was measured in 327 consecutive patients with at least one venous thrombotic episode and in 317 age- and sex-matched control individuals. Different normal reference ranges were obtained and adopted for men and women. Protein S deficiency was found in 3.1% (95% Cl: 1.5-5.2) of patients and in 1.3% of controls (95% Cl: 0.3-2.8). Ten patients and 4 control subjects had protein S deficiency, which determined a relative risk of thrombosis (sex- and age-adjusted odds ratio) of 2.4 (95% Cl: 0.8-7.9). When men and women were analyzed separately, the risk was 5.0 (95% CI: 0.6-43.6) and 1.6 (95% Cl: 0.4-6.7) respectively. PS-deficient men had more thrombotic episodes than women and later in life. Multivariate analysis established that sex was an independent determinant of the number of episodes, as was age, while PS deficiency was not. However sex and PS deficiency status were both determinants of age at first thrombotic episode.

This study aims to discuss the adoption of financial reporting and accounting standards for small-medium enterprises (SMEs) by Muslim entrepreneurs. A structured questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data from the SME owners. 214 Muslim owners of SME businesses participated in the survey. The results show that only a few Muslim entrepreneurs prepared financial reports regularly. The main reason for preparing the statement is for calculating tax, borrowing money, and decision making. An unexpected finding from this study is that most of the Muslim owners are unaware of Standard for SMEs. Users of SME financial reports include tax authority, banks, and owners, or shareholders. This study enriches the financial reporting studies by examining the accounting standards for SMEs in a Muslim dominated country. The findings of this study also have implications for the Institute of Indonesia chartered accountants (IICA) as standard setter. IICA must routinely disseminate these standards to SMEs and also assist them in preparing financial reports

One reason governments have protected their banks from foreign ownership is that they feared foreign-owned banks would “cut and run”—i.e. abandon their host markets—in a financial crisis. An unexpected finding of this chapter, however, is that while foreign banks’ commitments to host markets have indeed been fleeting in crises, those commitments were weakest when the relationship between foreign banks and host markets was not characterized by ownership. Thus it was foreign ownership through a “second home market” model and bank subsidiaries during the acute phase of the US financial crisis (2008–9) that saved East Central Europe from economic catastrophe. In Western Europe, meanwhile, where foreign bank ownership levels were low but cross-border lending was significant, bank lending retreated behind national borders. This chapter also rejects the argument that the Vienna Initiative, a voluntary bank rollover agreement, compelled foreign-owned banks to maintain their exposures in East Central Europe.

Abstract Background Carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) often results from multiple mechanisms, creating unique phenotypic patterns of resistance including retaining susceptibility to traditional antipseudomonal β-lactams: cefepime (FEP), ceftazidime (CAZ) and piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP). Outcomes of patients with CRPA susceptible to FEP, CAZ and TZP are unclear. Methods The Georgia Emerging Infections Programed performs active, population-based surveillance for CRPA (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] ≥ 8 µg/mL for doripenem, imipenem or meropenem) isolated from sterile sites, urine, lower respiratory tracts and wounds in metropolitan Atlanta. We created a retrospective cohort of adults without cystic fibrosis with their first episode of CRPA while hospitalized or hospitalized within 1 week, from 8/2016 – 7/2018. We compared patients with CRPA that remained susceptible to FEP, CAZ and TZP (“susceptible CRPA”) to those that were not (“resistant CRPA”) including multivariable logistic regression for 30-day mortality. Results Among 643 patients, 638 had susceptibility results available for FEP, CAZ or TZP. 60% were male, median age was 65 years, and median Charlson comorbidity index was 2 (Table 1). Most (66%) resided in a hospital or long-term care facility 4 days prior to culture. The most common source was urine (38%). Non-susceptibility to multiple antibiotic classes was common: 523 (81%) for 3 classes and 214 (33%) for 5 classes (Table 2). 220 (34%) patients had susceptible CRPA and compared to patients with resistant CRPA, were more likely to have lived in a private residence, have a community-associated infection, and less likely to be in the ICU previously (Table 1). Patients with susceptible CRPA had a similar crude 30-day mortality (16% vs 12%, p = 0.15) to those with resistant CRPA, but in a multivariable analysis had an increased 30-day mortality (OR 1.9; 95% CI 1.1–3.2). Further research into mechanisms of resistance or antibiotics received might help explain this unexpected finding. Candida auris is an emerging antifungal resistant human fungal pathogen increasingly reported in healthcare facilities. It persists in hospital environments, and on skin surfaces, and can form biofilms readily. Here, we investigated the cell surface proteins from C. auris biofilms grown in a synthetic sweat medium mimicking human skin conditions. Cell surface proteins from both biofilm and planktonic control cells were extracted with a buffer containing β-mercaptoethanol and resolved by 2-D gel electrophoresis. Some of the differentially expressed proteins were excised and identified by mass spectrometry. C. albicans orthologs Spe3p, Tdh3p, Sod2p, Ywp1p, and Mdh1p were overexpressed in biofilm cells when compared to the planktonic cells of C. auris. Interestingly, several proteins with zinc ion binding activity were detected. Nrg1p is a zinc-binding transcription factor that negatively regulates hyphal growth in C. albicans. C. auris does not produce true hypha under standard in vitro growth conditions, and the role of Nrg1p in C. auris is currently unknown. Western blot analyses of cell surface and cytosolic proteins of C. auris against anti-CalNrg1 antibody revealed the Nrg1p in both locations. Cell surface localization of Nrg1p in C. auris, an unexpected finding, was further confirmed by immunofluorescence microscopy. Nrg1p expression is uniform across all four clades of C. auris and is dependent on growth conditions. Taken together, the data indicate that C. auris produces several unique proteins during its biofilm growth, which may assist in the skin-colonizing lifestyle of the fungus during its pathogenesis.
