Objective: The purpose of this study was to measure chiropractic student attitudes toward team-based learning (TBL) to determine if they are similar to those of medical students and to help clarify existing evidence regarding student perceptions of TBL. Method: Two consecutive cohorts of chiropractic students enrolled in a course that used weekly TBL activities completed an adaptation of the value of teams survey at the end of the term. Chi square analysis was used to assess for differences in scores between the beginning and end of the term. Results: The students did value the TBL process (χ2 = 75.21, p < .001). Students had a neutral opinion regarding TBL at the start of the term (χ2 = 30.41, p < .001), but their opinion of TBL improved by the end of the term (χ2 = 51.66, p < .001). Conclusion: These results were similar to those found in medical education studies. Students tended to value TBL, but they were more receptive to it over time.

Abstract Background Over the last decade, there have been sustained efforts to diversify the healthcare workforce. In 2016, the IDWeek Program Committee was charged to ensure gender equity in speaker sessions. Whether this intervention also resulted in more opportunities for underrepresented speakers has not been determined. Methods This project was supported by IDSA, who provided demographic information on IDWeek speakers (excluding poster sessions) from 2013-2019. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics, and chi-square analysis evaluated changes over time. Each speaker slot was considered an independent event. Data was combined for 2013-2016 (≤2016) and 2017-2019 (>2016). IDSA membership demographics were available from 2014 for gender, race/ethnicity, from 2016 for age, and from 2018 for professional degree. Results A total of 3640 speaker slots were filled by 2504 individuals from 2013-2019. A larger proportion of speaker slots were filled by women >2016 (51%) vs ≤ 2016 (43%), with a linear increase from 38.6% in 2013 to 52.1% in 2019 (p< 0.001). Averaged across 2013-2019, IDSA membership was 67.5% White, 20.6% Asian, 7.7% Latinx, 3.9% Black, and 0.4% Other. IDWeek Speakers during that timeframe were 77.7% White, 13.9% Asian, 4.7% Latinx, 2.7% Black, and 1.0% Other; a larger proportion of slots were filled by Asian speakers >2016 (16.3%) vs ≤ 2016 (12.8%) (p=0.005). The proportion of pharmacist speakers increased over time; 5.1% of speakers in 2019 reflected IDSA pharmacist membership (5.4%). The proportion of individuals invited to speak more than once differed by age (19% in < 40yo, 28% 40-49yo, 32% 50-59yo, and 22% >60yo; p< 0.001), and professional degree (28% physicians, 18% pharmacists, 9% other doctorates, and 7% non-doctorate speakers; p< 0.001). This effort has not resulted in increased diversity of invited speakers from groups underrepresented in IDSA membership. To ensure that invited speakers represent the membership of IDSA/IDWeek partner organizations and more importantly, the communities we serve, we call for continued application of the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Access, and Equity at IDWeek. AbstractAlthough medical students enter medicine with altruistic motives and seek to serve indigent populations, studies show that medical students’ attitudes towards the undeserved tend to worsen significantly as they go through their medical education. This finding emphasizes the need for medical educators to implement activities such as service-learning that may help mitigate this negative trend.All students at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Medicine are required to participate in longitudinal service-learning throughout medical school, and a majority of students interact with the underserved at their service-learning sites. Using the previously validated Medical Student Attitudes Towards the Underserved (MSATU), independent sample T-tests showed that students who interact with underserved populations at their sites scored with significantly better attitudes towards the underserved at the end of their preclinical phase. Subjects included 58 medical students with 100% taking the MSATU. This result indicates that longitudinal service-learning, particularly when it includes interaction with the underserved, can be one method to combat the worsening of medical students’ attitudes as they complete their medical education.

Stress is accepted as the accumulation of unpleasant state of physical, mental and emotion on a person. Medical education has been known as one of the most stressful academic curriculum.  Hence, medical students may subjected to multiple psychological changes and challenges throughout the years of medical education.  The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of stress and its associated factors among medical students. This cross sectional study was conducted from April to May 2018 in medical school in Sabah. It involved 396 medical students through universal sampling.  Self-administered questionnaires were used as an instrument for data collection. The questionnaires included were Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales 21 (DASS-21) and Medical Student Stressors Questionnaire (MSSQ). Bivariate analysis (Chi Square test, Fisher’s Exact Test, Independent T test and Man-Whitney U test) were used to analyse the association. The response rate was 90.2%. The prevalence of stress among medical students were 33.3%.  Significant associated factors include financial support inadequacy (p=0.010) and all categories of medical student stressors. The mean score of the academic related stressors was found to be at 2.117 (±0.758) which was the highest mean score among medical student stressors assessed by MSSQ. The result of this study can be used as a basis for implementation of preventive measures such as provision of comprehensive, integrated and responsive mental health care services in university-based settings.

Abstract: Prehypertension is a warning sign, early in age which denotes the risk of hypertension later on in life. Clinical and academic challenges of medical students may have adverse effect on their lifestyle, predisposing vulnerable subjects to elevated blood pressure. This study was aimed to determine the association between dietary habits and prehypertension among Indonesian young adults in Manado. This was an analytical study with a cross-sectional study. Subjects were 111 medical students (undergraduate and postgraduate) aged between 20-30 years, of either sex. A pre-tested questionnaire was used to elicit the details on physical activity, family history of hypertension, tobacco use, and dietary habits. According to JNC-7 guidelines, a systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 120 to 139 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 80 to 89 mmHg is considered as prehypertension. Of the 111 subjects, 22.5% showed blood pressure levels within the range of prehypertension. Chi-square analysis revealed that junk food consumption (OR=3,152; 95% CI=1,253-7,925; P=0,023), and soft drink consumption (OR=4,747; 95% CI=1,797-12,539; P=0,002) were the risk factors of prehypertension. Conclusion: Dietary habits were associated with the prehypertension among young adults in Manado.Keywords: dietary habits, prehypertension, young adultsAbstrak: Prehipertensi merupakan tanda peringatan dini akan resiko terjadinya hipertensi di kemudian hari. Tuntutan dalam pendidikan dan pelayanan sekaligus di RS berdampak terhadap pola aktivitas mereka sehari-hari sehingga dapat memengaruhi tekanan darah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara diet (konsumsi makanan dan minuman) dengan kejadian prehipertensi pada mahasiswa kedokteran Univrsitas Sam Ratulangi. Jenis penelitian ialah analitik dengan desain potong lintang. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan 111 mahasiswa kedokteran peserta P3D dan PPDS (calon spesialis) berusia antara 20-30 tahun sebagai subyek penelitian. Dilakukan pemeriksaan tekanan darah dan berat badan. Penentuan kebiasaan makan ditetapkan berdasarkan hasil pengisian kuesioner. Definisi prehipertensi berdasarkan kriteria JNC 7 yaitu tekanan darah sistolik lebih dari 120 mmHg tapi kurang dari 140 mmHg, dan atau tekanan darah diastolik lebih dari 80 mmHg tapi kurang dari 90 mmHg. Uji Chi-square dilakukan untuk melihat hubungan antara konsumsi junk food dan soft drink dengan kejadian prehipertensi dan didapatkan adanya hubungan antara konsumsi junk food (OR=3,152; 95% CI=1,253-7,925; P=0,023), dan soft drink (OR=4,747; 95% CI=1,797-12,539; P=0,002) dengan kejadian prehipertensi pada subyek dewasa muda. Simpulan: Diet (konsumsi junk food dan soft drink) berhubungan dengan kejadian prehipertensi pada subyek dewasa muda di Manado.Kata kunci: diet, prehipertensi, dewasa muda

One vital goal of medical education is to promote the development of desirable professional qualities among future physicians, such as compassion, empathy, and humanism. Future physicians must finish their training prepared to meet the changing health needs of society, yet in reality many students graduate from medical school more cynical and less empathetic than when they began. During clinical clerkships, many students experience an “ethical erosion” as they transition in to real world clinical settings. Through innovative longitudinal integrated curricular designs focusing on continuity, medical students participate in the comprehensive care of patients over time and have continuous ongoing learning relationships with the responsible clinicians. As patients place increasing importance on the doctor-patient relationship, learning models that foster stronger connections between medical students and their patients, as well as with their teachers and communities, are needed in order to better prepare the next generation of physicians to serve a changing health care system.

Purpose: Implementing competency-based medical education in diagnostic radiology residencies will change the paradigm of learning and assessment for residents. The objective of this study is to evaluate medical student perceptions of competency-based medical education in diagnostic radiology programs and how this may affect their decision to pursue a career in diagnostic radiology. Methods: First-, second-, and third-year medical students at a Canadian university were invited to complete a 14-question survey containing a mix of multiple choice, yes/no, Likert scale, and open-ended questions. This aimed to collect information on students’ understanding and perceptions of competency-based medical education and how the transition to competency-based medical education would factor into their decision to enter a career in diagnostic radiology. Results: The survey was distributed to 300 medical students and received 63 responses (21%). Thirty-seven percent of students had an interest in pursuing diagnostic radiology that ranged from interested to committed and 46% reported an understanding of competency-based medical education and its learning approach. The implementation of competency-based medical education in diagnostic radiology programs was reported to be a positive factor by 70% of students and almost all reported that breaking down residency into measurable milestones and required case exposure was beneficial. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that medical students perceive competency-based medical education to be a beneficial change to diagnostic radiology residency programs. The changes accompanying the transition to competency-based medical education were favored by students and factored into their residency decision-making.

Nutrition education is an essential component of medical education if new physicians are to be equipped to address common chronic diseases, including obesity and the associated diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Most medical students recognize this need and desire nutrition education; however, finding time in a medical school curriculum and funding are challenging. Available, free online resources and small group exercises can be utilized to provide basic, up-to-date nutrition information to medical students.

62 Background: Esophageal cancer management has evolved due to improvements in staging and treatment strategies. Endoscopic local excision presents an attractive option for definitive management of T1 cancers, avoiding the morbidity of esophagectomy. We hypothesized that for cT1N0 cancers, patients who underwent local excision would have lower survival compared to esophagectomy due to potential discordant staging. Methods: The National Cancer Database was queried for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (AC) with AJCC T1N0 clinical stage who underwent local excision (n = 1625) or esophagectomy (n = 3255) between 1998 and 2012. Chi-square analysis was used to compare demographic and clinical characteristics by procedure. Chi-square trend analysis was performed to assess trends in procedure type over time. Cox Regression analysis was performed to assess survival by procedure controlling for demographic and clinical characteristics. Results: Between 1998 and 2012, the proportion of patients who underwent local excision increased from 12% to 50% for all patients (p < 0.001); from 17% to 40% for SCC patients (p < 0.001); and from 9% to 51% for AC patients (p < 0.001). Surgical procedure varied significantly by demographic, socioeconomic status, facility, and tumor-related factors. 65% of cT1N0 cancers had concordant clinical and pathological staging after esophagectomy, with 11% having positive nodal disease; 44% were concordant after local excision. While no significant difference was seen in unadjusted survival, adjusted Cox Regression analysis indicated worse survival after esophagectomy compared to local excision for all cases (HR 1.67; 95% CI, 1.40-2.00) and for ACs with concordant staging (HR 1.54; 95% CI, 1.11-2.14). Conclusions: Local excision for cT1N0 esophageal cancer has increased over time. Staging concordance for esophagectomy is seen in two-thirds of cases. Contrary to our hypothesis, patients undergoing local excision for T1N0 cancers have better overall survival than those undergoing esophagectomy, which may reflect early differences in mortality and/or selection bias. As this study was unable to distinguish T1a from T1b, further analysis is warranted.

Abstract Background: The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has upended medical education. This pandemic has risen uncertainty over the start of the normal routine of studies in medical universities. Amidst the worldwide shortage of doctors, there is widespread dilemma and disagreement regarding the role of the medical students during this pandemic. Medical education is suspended and the students are barred from being direct medical providers unless there is a critical need for the additional healthcare workforce. Considering these facts we have done a survey amongst medical students of pre-final and final year to know and evaluate their opinion and outlook regarding their involvement in the hospital work at the time of the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic. Materials and Method: This is a cross-sectional study among the clinic going medical students of Government Doon Medical College Dehradun, India. It is used to know their opinion regarding their voluntary initiative to actively participate and usefulness in the hospital works while going through their classes and hospital postings. We have circulated a questionnaire among 385 medical students to know their mindset and formulate a plan to include them in the future clinical hospital works in case the pandemic situation worsens.Statistical analysis is performed using SPSS version 25. Chi-square test was used to evaluate the association between the two variables. A two-tailed p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Out of 294 respondents 62.2% had a high motivation to work in the hospital. This was synergized by the worldwide appreciation of doctors according to 88.8% of students. A sense of duty towards the patients was clear by the responses which surpassed the fear of the disease and the belief of being a better doctor (94.2%). Conclusion: The majority of medical students were highly motivated to be a part of the hospital workforce and help to fight this apocalyptic pandemic.
