The study reports the corrosion inhibition activity of methanol extract of Aframomum chrysanthum on mild steel in 0.1 M HCl, using gravimetry analysis. The weight loss of the mild steels was observed to increase with increasing immersion time. The inhibition efficiency (%IE) was also observed to have increased with increasing concentrations of the inhibitor but decreases with increasing immersion time. The effect of temperature change on the inhibition efficiency was also studied and it was observed that for every increase in temperature there was a corresponding increase in weight loss and decreased in the %IE. The highest values of %IE; 46.66, 56.66, 60.0, 80.0 & 93.33 was observed at temperature 303 K for 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 & 1.0 g/L respectively. Activation energy (Ea) values and the enthalpy values reviews that the adsorption process followed a physisorption’s mechanism. Change in enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy change (ΔS) of the reaction was positive indicating the endothermic nature and the spontaneity of the reaction. Three adsorption isotherms were tried on the inhibition process and only the Temkin isotherm gave the best fit with R2 value of 0.903, describing the best adsorption mechanism. The adsorption equilibrium constants K­ads were positive, indicating the feasibility of the adsorption of the inhibitor to the metal surface. Gibb’s Free Energy change of adsorption, ΔGads are negative indicating that the adsorption of the extract of Aframomum chrysanthum on mild steel surface is spontaneous. The values of ΔGads shows physisorption mechanism. All confirming that Aframomumm chrysanthum extract is a good corrosion inhibitor on mild steel in 0.1 M HCl.

An investigation was conducted to improve the corrosion inhibition efficiency of molybdate-based inhibitors for mild steel which is the main construction material of cooling water systems, using nitroethane as an organic compound beside zinc. In this study a new molybdate-based inhibitor was introduced with the composition of 60 ppm molybdate, 20 ppm nitrite, 20 ppm nitroethane, and 10 ppm zinc. Inhibition efficiency of molybdate alone and with nitrite, nitroethane, and zinc on the uniform corrosion of mild steel in stimulated cooling water (SCW) was assessed by electrochemical techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance (AC impedance) measurements. Weight loss measurements were made with coupon testing specimens in the room temperature for 48 h. Studies of electron microscopy, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photograph and X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) microanalysis, were used. The results obtained from the polarization and AC impedance curves were in agreement with those from the corrosion weight loss results. The results indicate that the new inhibitor is as effective as molybdate alone, though at one-ninth of the concentration range of molybdate, which is economically favorable.

The inhibition efficiency of Musa sapientum (banana) peel extracts at different concentrations and temperatures on mild steel corrosion in acidic solution of 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) were investigated by using weight loss method. The banana peel extract concentrations were tested from 300 to 500 ppm at temperature range between 25°C to 60°C. The performance of banana peel extract as an inhibitor was found compatible in the tested solution. The corrosion rates, which were calculated from the weight loss data, showed that the inhibition efficiency of the extract increased from 86.9% to 89.0% as the concentration of banana peel extract increased from 300 ppm to 500 ppm. It was also observed that the inhibition efficiency decreased as the temperature was increased from 25°C to 60°C. Characterization of the peel extract by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has detected the presence of bioactive compounds which are responsible for the corrosion inhibition and adsorption properties on mild steel surface. Eleven major compounds have been identified as having corrosion inhibition properties. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups of alcohols, alkanes, carbonyls, aromatics, ethers, and esters that can prevent corrosion by adsorption on steel surface.

Efek inhibisi korosi dan sifat-sifat adsorpsi oleh ekstrak kulit buah kakao (Theobroma cacao)  pada baja lunak (mild steel) dalam larutan asam 1,5M HCl telah dipelajari menggunakan teknik konvensional metode berat hilang pada variasi waktu, konsentrasi dan suhu. Parameter-parameter termodinamika seperti energi aktivasi, entalpi, entropi dan perubahan energi bebas dihitung. Polarisasi elektrokimia telah dievaluasi untuk memastikan jenis inhibitor. Spektra infrared dan GCMS dilakukan untuk mengetahui senyawa ekstrak yang berperan  dalam proses inhibisi. Morfologi permukaan sampel diamati dengan menggunakan scanning electro microscopy dengan  energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) . Keseluruhan hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak polar kulit buah coklat  dapat digunakan sebagai inhibitor korosi yang efektif pada baja karbon di lingkungan 1,5M HCl dengan pencapaian efisiensi  inhibisi   terkorosi sebesar 96.26% (weight loss) dan 92.08% (Tafel) pada konsentrasi ekstrak 2,5% selama768 jam. Mekanisme inhibisi adalah  adsorpsi chemiadsorpsi berdasar tingginya nilai entalpi dan energi bebas.Effisiensi Inhibisi diketahui meningkat dengan peningkatan konsentrasi dari ekstrak serta menurun dengan peningkatan suhu. Kurva polarisasi menunjukkan inhibitor ini berperilaku sebagai inhibitor campuran dengan dominan pada inhibisi katodik. Ekstrak diadsorpsi oleh permukaan mild steel  mengikuti model adsorpsi isotherm Langmuir. Kondisi permukaan mild steel menunjukan terjadinya adsorpsi di permukaan membentuk lapisan tipis di permukaan logam. Penambahan ekstrak kulit buah kakao ke dalam larutan HCl sangat efektif untuk mengurangi serangan korosi di permukaan mild steel.  Kata kunci: Korosi, Inhibitor, Theobroma cacao, Mild steel, Potensiodinamik Corrosion Inhibition Efficiency Mild Steel in Acid Media with Inhibitor Peels Extract of Cacao (Theobroma cacao)ABSTRACT Inhibition and adsorption properties of Theobroma cacao peel polar extract addition on corrosion inhibition efficiency of 0.3%C mild steel in hydrochloric acid solution for various exposuring time, extract concentration and working temperature were investigated using weight loss test method. Electrochemical polarization test was also conducted to confirm the effectiveness of inhibition. Infrared spectrum of the samples was also evaluated to reveal compounds of the extract which controll the inhibition process. Morphology and local composition of sample surfaces were respectively examined by scanning electron microscope  (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Thermodynamic parameters such as energy activation, enthalpy, entropy and change in the free energy were then determined using related data. The results show that the inhibition efficiency increases significantly up to 96.3% (by weight loss method) and 92.08% (Tafel) with the increase of TCPE content. The optimum efficiency is obtained at extract concentration of 2,5% for exposuring time of 768h. However, the efficiency decreases slightly with increasing working temperature in the range of 303K-323K. The polarization curve shows the inhibitor behaves as a mixed inhibitor with the dominant cathodic inhibition. The adsorption model is found to obey Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Surface condition is  improved due to the adsorption and then formation of thin layer film protection in the surface of the steel. The corrosion inhibition of mild steel by 7-(ethylthiobenzimidazolyl) theophylline (7-ETBT) in 1 M HCl medium was investigated through weight loss and Tafel polarization techniques within a temperature range of 298 to 318 K. The inhibition efficiency depends on the concen­tration of 7-ETBT and reaction system temperature. The maximum inhibition efficiency values of 90.73 and 87.06 %, respectively, were estimated using both weight loss and Tafel polarization techniques at 298 K. The results suggest spontaneous and predominant physical adsorption of 7-ETBT on the metal surface which obeys Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, Tafel polarization method revealed that 7-ETBT is a mixed-type inhibitor. Po­tentiodynamic polarization results are in accordance with weight loss data to a good extent.

Corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1 M HCl in the presence of Tecoma capensis flower extract was carried out by means of mass loss, potentiodynamic polarisation, and electrochemical impedance techniques. The inhibition efficiency varied with concentration of the inhibitor, immersion time, and temperature. The adsorption of the inhibitor on mild steel surface obeys Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters reveal that the adsorption process is spontaneous. Electrochemical studies reflect that the inhibitor acts as a mixed-type inhibitor. Surface analytical techniques ascertain the inhibitive nature of the studied inhibitor.

Effect of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), a surfactant on corrosion of mild steel in 1 M hydrochloric acid was studied using three techniques namely: weight loss, electrochemical polarization and metallurgical research microscopy. Results obtained reveal that SLS is good inhibitor and shows very good corrosion inhibition efficiency (IE). The IE was found to vary with concentration of inhibitor and temperature. The electrochemical polarization result revealed that SLS is anodic in nature.

Abstract: This work deals with the inhibitive characteristics of Moringa oleifera fruits and leaves extracts in Hydrochloric Acid solution and Sodium Hydroxide solution respectively on the corrosion of mild steel. This was carried out using weight loss and polarization techniques. The effects of immersion time, the effect of acid and alkaline concentration on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in 1.0M HCl and 1.0 NaOH with addiction of extracts were deduced. The fruits which were dried and grounded to powder of 10g and the leaves which range from 25cm3 to 100cm3 were used for this study. The corrosion rate was very high in the absence of inhibitors (Moringa oleifera fruits and the leaves extracts). The mild steel was cut into coupon averaging a total surface area of 4.262cm2 . The sample was weighed and immersed into a beaker containing 1.0M NaOH with different volumes of moringa leaves and 1.0M HCl with 10g dried concentrated powdered moringa fruits with coupons removed every 7 days for weight loss measurements till 4 weeks. The corrosion rates were found to be decreased by 83% in 1.0M HCl and 78% in 1.0M NaOH respectively, values of inhibition efficiency (ࣁ (%were calculated from weight loss. The results obtained showed that the Moringa oleifera fruits and leaves extracts could serve as effective inhibitors on the corrosion of mild steel in HCl and NaOH respectively. The corrosion inhibition properties of methanol extract of Jatropha curcas (JC) were investigated for mild steel (MS) in acidic medium using weight loss and potentiodynamic methods. Corrosion inhibition of MS in 1MH2SO4 was studied in the absence and presence of various concentrations of the methanolic extract of Jatropha curcas barks. The results showed an increase in corrosion inhibition with increasing concentration of the extract. The inhibition efficiency of 1000 ppm JC extract from the weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization methods were approximately 92.0% after 24 hours immersion in the acidic solution. Open circuit potential (OCP) and potentiodynamic polarization measurements showed that the JC extract acts as a mixed-type inhibitor.

The synergistic effect of halide ions such as KCl, KBr and KI on the corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1 N sulphuric acid by [Formula: see text]-2,c-6-diphenyl-t-3-methyl piperdin-4-ones with semicarbazone (01[Formula: see text]SC), [Formula: see text]-2,c-6-diphenyl-N-methyl-t-3-ethyl piperdin-4-ones with semicarbazone (02[Formula: see text]SC) and 2,6-diphenyl-t-3-ethyl piperdin-4-one with semicarbazone (03[Formula: see text]SC) has been examined by weight loss method, potentiodynamic polarization measurements and electrochemical AC impedance spectroscopy. Results show that substituted [Formula: see text]-2,c-6-diphenyl piperidin-4-ones with semicarbazone act as the perfect corrosion inhibitors and their inhibition efficiency increases with the addition of halide ions. The inhibitor (01[Formula: see text]SC) shows the inhibition efficiency of 78.28% (0.2[Formula: see text]mM) by using a weight loss method. The influence of I[Formula: see text], Br[Formula: see text] and Cl[Formula: see text] anions raises the inhibition efficiency of the substituted 2,6-diphenyl piperidin-4-ones with semicarbazone due to the synergistic effect. The synergistic effect of halide ions was formed in the following order: KI [Formula: see text] KBr [Formula: see text] KCl.

The corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 1 N sulphuric acid solution by 2,6-diphenylpiperidin-4-ones with various substituents at 3- and 3,5-positions (01–06) has been tested by weight loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopic methods, and FTIR and UV absorption spectra. The surface morphology of the mild steel specimen has been analyzed by SEM. The effect of temperature (300 to 323 ± 1 K) on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in the presence of the inhibitors (01–06) was studied using weight loss techniques. The effect of anions (Cl−, Br−, and I−) on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in the presence of the same inhibitors was also studied by weight loss method and the synergism parameters were calculated. The adsorption characteristics of the inhibitors have been determined from the results.
