A study on varietal effects on the productivity of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) was conducted during the 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons at the Research Farm of the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI) Kuru, Jos in Plateau State, Nigeria. The study was aimed at assessing the effect of variety on productivity of potato. The treatments consisted of two varieties of potato (improved variety: Daimat, local variety). The experiment consisted of 4 that were laid out in a 2×2 split plot arrangement in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated three times. Crop data collected were percent germination, plant height, leaf area, number of leaves, number of branches, number of stems, stem girth, number of tubers per plant, number of seed tubers per plant, number of ware tubers per plant, weight of seed tubers per plant, weight of ware tubers per plant and total yield of potato (tons/ha). Although there was no significant effect of variety on the growth parameters of potato but the improved variety performed better than the local variety.  The improved variety is here by recommended for adoption in the study area.

ABSTRACT Inoculation Techniques of Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus, the Cause of Bacterial Ring Rot Disease, on Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus, the cause of bacterial ring rot disease on potatoes, has been detected in potato fields in Pangalengan. To anticipate the spread of the pathogen, researches on the desease epidemiology are urgent to be carried out. Artificial inoculation techniques will be useful in the epidemiological studies. The objective of this reasearch was to evaluate some inoculation techniques, which are simple, cheap and fast in causing disease symptoms. The experiment was carried out at the laboratory and glasshouse of Balai Penelitian Tanaman Sayuran (Balitsa), Lembang. The experiment was arranged in the randomized block design with five treatments of inoculation technique and five replications. The treatments were (a) soaking wounded seed tubers in pathogen suspension, (b) soaking not wounded seed tubers in pathogen suspension, (c) pathogen suspension was injected into leaf axil, (d) pathogen suspension was injected into seed tubers, and (e) pathogen suspension was poured into the planting holes. The results showed that stabbing and soaking tubers in pathogen suspension caused the shortest incubation period (17 days after inoculation) and the highest disease incidence (60%). The group Phureja (Solanum tuberosum L.) has been little studied in Peru, despite its culinary, nutritional and industrial quality and the risk of erosion to which it is subjected in recent decades. The objective of this research was to evaluate the total and commercial yield of tubers of fifteen potato cultivars (Solanum tuberosum, Phureja group). Traditional, yellow, and early cultivars were evaluated from Cajamarca region, Peru, to identify the most productive cultivars within the study group. The work was carried out on a plot of the Silvoagricultural Service of the Universidad Nacional de Cajamarca: 7 ° 10`LS and 78 ° 30’ LW, 2670 masl, 14.7 °C average annual temperature, 64.5% relative humidity and 651 mm of annual precipitation. Seeding was carried out at 0.90 m and 0.40 m between rows and between plants, respectively; in completely randomized block design, with three repetitions. Plant height, number of stems, number and total weight of tubers, number and weight of tubers according to categories, specific gravity, dry matter of tubers and foliage, and harvest index were evaluated. Significant statistical differences were found between cultivars for a total number of tubers, number of commercial tubers, a weight of commercial tubers, plant height, number of stems, dry matter of the tubers and harvest index. The best cultivars in tuber yield were Blanca amarilla (27.8 t/ha), Limeña huachuma (27.4 t/ha), Llanqueja (25.0 t/ha), Amarilla redonda (23.3 t/ha) and Piña amarilla (21.8 t/ha).

Potato is a highly perishable crop and storage facilities for the crop are also limited. Consequently, to keep planting materials (seed) from the end of one cropping season to the beginning of another pose a great challenge to growers. This study was conducted during the 2019 cropping season in Pankshin, Plateau state, Northern Guinea savanna zone, Nigeria to compare the performance of whole seed tubers (T1) and slice seed tubers (T2) of potato. The treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD), each replicated thrice. Individual plots have a dimension of 3 m x 5 m with distance of 1 m between blocks and 0.5m between plots. Parameters evaluated were rate of plant germination from cultivated tubers, plant height and fresh yield.  The data were analysed using T – test. Results showed that there was no significant difference between whole seed potato and sliced tuber seed for all the parameters tested.  This study suggests that in areas where seed tubers are scarce, growers should cut there potato seed tubers to enable them have more seeds for planting. Storage facilities should be provided to farmers by government and spirited individuals or groups in order to reduce the high costs of seeds for planting.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a demanding crop regarding fertilization practices, and its productivity also depends on the variety used, environmental conditions, soil fertility, and crop management. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the interaction of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization sources on potato crop yield. A randomized block design with a 3×3 factorial arrangement, nine treatments, and four repetitions was established. INIA-303 Canchan was the variety evaluated using three nitrogen fertilization sources: ammonium nitrate (AN), ammonium sulfate (AS), and urea. Also, three phosphorus sources were used: monoammonium phosphate (MAP), diammonium phosphate (DAP), and triple superphosphate (TSP). Total yield, commercial yield, tuber number per plant, and tuber weight per plant were studied. INIA-303 Canchan variety showed positive responses to the combinations of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization according to the soil and climate conditions where the research was carried out. AN+DAP was the combination with the highest total yield, commercial yield, number, and weight of tubers per plant (P<0.01).The fertilization mixtures of AN+DAP, AS+MAP, and AN+MAP, applied on the INIA-303 Canchan potato variety, can be recommended to achieve yields between 32.45 t ha-1 and 33.98 t ha-1

ABSTRACT This research purposes know the growth and tubers yield of potato (G0) under various thickness of cocopeat media and time of sundstrom nutrient giving. The research was carried in the screen house in Pandansari, Paguyangan district from October 2014 until January 2015. The research used Randomized Complete Block Design with 2 factor and 3 repetitions. The first factor was the thickness of media with three levels; 10 cm, 15 cm, and 20 cm. The second factor was the time of nutrient solution giving with two levels; once for three days and once for six days. The results of the research showed that the thickness of cocopeat media 20 cm was good for plant height, total of leaves, wide of plant leaves, and improve the roots length 23.6 %. Time of nutrient giving once for three days was good for plant height, total of leaves, wide of plant leaves, weight of fresh plant, weight of dry plant and the result was good for stolon effectiveness (49.84%), weight of fresh tuber (137.85 g), and weight of dry tuber (21.55 g). The treatment of cocopeat medium thickness and time of nutrient giving had not been able to provide increased yield of potato tuber (G0).

Potato (Solanum tuberosum L) is a strategic national food security crop in that can be used as a supplement for carbohydrates. It is the fastest growing staple food crop and source of income for poor smallholder farmers. There is limited documentation on effects of earthing up irish potatoes on yield and yield components in Zimbabwe. A field experiment was conducted in Zaka district of Masvingo province in Zimbabwe during the 2018/19 cropping season. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of time of earthing up on yield and yield parameters of BP1 potato variety. The treatments consisted of four levels of time of earthing up (no earthing up (control), three, four and five weeks after plant emergence), replicated three times on a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Results on earthing-up at three weeks recorded significantly (P<0.013) the highest total tuber yield (21.97 t ha-1) which is 10% higher compared to no earthing up which recorded 14.43 t ha-1. Moreover, earthing up at two weeks had the least number of greening tuber yield (3%), 11% pest damaged tuber yield, 6% unmarketable tuber yield and 45% marketable tuber yield. This is in contrast with no earthing up which recorded 91% greening tuber yield, 25.3% on pest damaged tubers, 59% on unmarketable tubers and 10% marketable tuber yield. Based on the results, first earthing up should be done at three weeks after complete plant emergence at the study area under rain fed conditions for the production of potatoes with improved yield and better tuber quality.

Hot pepper is an important vegetable and spice crop in Ethiopia. However, the productivity of hot pepper is limited by poor soil fertility and lack of proper soil and water conservation measures under irrigated condition. Therefore, hot pepper crop response to nitrogen (N) fertilizer and mulching experiment was conducted at Alage ATVET College. The treatments consisted of three mulch types (no mulch, transparent plastic mulch, and dry banana leaves mulch) and four levels of N (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N ha-1) factorial arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. A hot pepper cultivar commonly known as “MarekoFana” was used for the study. Days to 50% flowering, 50% fruit set, maturity and harvest were significantly prolonged in response to increasing N application. The delays were about 7, 19, 23 and 12 days at the N levels of 50, 100 and 150 kg N ha-1respectively compared to the control. The analysis of variance revealed that plant height, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, dry weight of seeds per pod, total weight of dried pods per plant, weight of individual dry pods and width were significantly (P = .001) increased by the main effect of mulching. Generally, the results revealed that nitrogen application significantly (P = .001) influenced all growth parameters, pod yield, and yield components of the crop. Nitrogen application at 100 kg ha-1 resulted in the highest total dried pod yield (4.5 tha-1), marketable yield (3.76 t ha- 1), pod length (13.3 cm), pod width (3.2 cm), mean dry weight of pod (3.85 g), and seed number per pod (108.4). The interaction of N and mulching also significantly (P = .05) affected marketable and total pod yields. In conclusion, based on agronomic performance and partial budget analyses results we recommend a combined application of dry banana leaves mulch and 100 kg N ha-1 for economically feasible and sustainable hot pepper production in Alage areas of Central Rift Valley of Ethiopia.

Effects of nitrogen on the leaf chlorophyll (chl), yield and yield attributing characters of potato as tuber number and mean tuber weight were studied. Correlation coefficients between the investigated characters were determined. Five nitrogen rates (0, 150, 200, 250 and 300 kg/ha) and four potato cultivars (Burren, Slaney, Anna and Emma) were used in the study. First, second, third class tuber yields and total tuber yield, tuber number per plant, and leaf chl were significantly influenced by both nitrogen rate and cultivar, whereas mean tuber weight was affected only by cultivar. Maximum total yield was obtained at 200 kg N/ha. There was significant linear relationship between leaf chl and N applied (R2=0.91). There were significant correlations between chl and yield and yield related characters. Total yield significantly correlated with leaf chl. Correlations between first class yield and total yield as well as total yield and tuber number per plant were highly significant.   Key words: Potato; Solanum tuberosum L.; Leaf chlorophyll; Nitrogen; Yield DOI: 10.3329/bjb.v38i2.5141 Bangladesh J. Meadow soils could supply significant amounts of N for several years and reduce N requirements for the potato (Solanum tuberosum L.). We examined a combination of three crop sequences, three cultivars and six N rates in relation to tuber yield and quality. Superior, Kennebec and Snowden were grown as follows on a Tilly silty loam between 1993 and 1995: (1) 3-yr continuous potato cropping of Superior, (2) 3-yr continuous potato cropping starting with Snowden and followed by 2 yr of Kennebec, and (3) 3-yr sequence of Kennebec, oat (Avena sativa L. 'Marion') and Superior. There were six N treatments (0, 70, 105, 140, 175 and 210 kg N ha−1) and a split application of 140 kg N ha−1 (half at seeding and half before hilling). The seasons were either favorable to growth (1993), relatively wet (1994) or relatively dry (1995). In 1993 and 1994, total yield varied between 37 and 50 t ha−1. In 1995, continuous cropping of Kennebec and Superior produced 28 t ha−1 compared with 37 t ha−1 under crop rotation. The rotation increased total yield of Superior by 34% and graded yield by 42% in 1995. The N requirement was closely related to yield, rather than cultivar. Compared with continuous cropping of Superior, tuber-quality index was highest with the rotation for rhizoctonia (Rhizoctonia solani) (67 vs. 57) and common scab (Streptomyces scabies) (90 vs. 82). The incidence of both diseases decreased when at least 70 kg N ha−1 was applied. For common scab, skin coverages was higher at rates of 0, 175 and 210 kg N ha−1 than at intermediate rates of 70–140 kg N ha−1. Mineral N accumulated in the 0–60-cm layer in the interrow and increased rapidly when N rates exceeded 105 kg N ha−1. After sod breakup an N rate in the range of 70–100 kg N ha−1 and crop rotation with cereals sustained the productivity of the potato during 3 yr while minimizing the environmental impact of mineral N. Key words: Crop rotation, common scab, rhizoctonia, reduced N rates, Solanum tuberosum L.
