Aims: The aim of this study was to observe the effects of Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) Techniques to improve bed mobility, transfer and early trunk control in Stroke patients. Study Design: Assessor blinded Randomized Control Trail. Place and Duration of the Study: Physiotherapy department of Shalamar hospital Lahore, Pakistan from March 2019 to September 2020. Methodology: A total of 50 acute stroke patients with severity level NIHSS>21 were recruited and randomly allocated into 2 groups (males: 29, females: 21; age range: 50 to 65) after obtaining written informed consent. Patients were assessed at baseline 0 week and after 6 week of post treatment on Trunk impairment scale (TIS) and ICU mobility scale. Results: It showed that PNF base trunk control exercises exhibited significant improvement in Trunk impairment scale(TIS) in Group A as compared with Group B at post-test, 18.44±3.176 vs 16.12±2.35 (p=0.004) respectively. ICU Mobility scale significantly improves at post-test in Group A as compared to Group B, 7.52 ±2.583 vs 5.84±1.434 (p=0.007) respectively. Conclusion: This study concluded that PNF based trunk exercise showed more improvement in Group A (Trunk stability exercises using PNF techniques) when compared with conventional training.

Introduction and Aim:One of the most significant and common clinical finding in a majority of children with (CP)is difficulty in walking and exhibiting poor balance control which results in poor gait and reaching movements as maintenance of stability is critical. There are numerous approaches, protocols and treatment strategies to improve balance and gait control. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of task- oriented training and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation exercises (PNF)on mobility and balance in spastic cerebral palsy.   Methodology: This was a comparative study design with pre-post type 20 samples were selected based on the inclusion criteria and were divided into two groups. Group A received task-oriented training and group B proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and Pre & post measurements were done using paediatric balance scale and timed up and go test.   Results:On comparing the post-test values of group A and group B both the group showed significant difference with the pre-test, on comparing the post-test values of group A and group B, group A showed better significance than group B.   Conclusion: The present study concluded that there seems to be evidence that task-oriented training is more beneficial in training program for increasing the mobility and balance in spastic cerebral palsy comparing to proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation.

This study investigated the frequency of aspiration pneumonia in conscious stroke patients fed by a family member and examined the effect of introducing training in swallowing techniques by nurses. A total of 96 consecutive patients presenting with dysphagia due to acute stroke were included in the study. Patients presenting between January 2000 and July 2003 ( n = 48) were fed orally by a family member given general nursing information (group A), whereas those presenting between August 2003 and March 2005 ( n = 48) were fed orally by an experienced nurse trained in specific swallowing techniques (group B). All patients were examined daily for the presence of aspiration pneumonia. The incidence of aspiration pneumonia was 33.3% in group A and 6.3% in group B ( P < 0.05). The incidence of aspiration pneumonia in dysphagic stroke patients who are orally fed is still high. Training in swallowing during oral feeding offers clear protection against pneumonia in conscious stroke patients.

This study involved the collection of (90) samples of women serum which included (30) serum samples collected from women before menopause (reproductive women) in the age range of (22-43) years and were considered as (group A- control). While, (group B) included (30) serum samples collected from women using oral contraceptive pills between the ages of (22-43) years old. Whereas, another (30) serum samples were collected from women after menopause between the ages of (43-54) years and were considered as (group C). All of the collected serum samples were subjected to a number of serological and chemical tests for the measurement of (E2, HDL, LDL and Ca). Then, the obtained data were statistical analyzed and results showed a significant decrease (p˂ 0.05) in (E2 ,Ca and HDL) levels in menopausal women compared to that of the normal healthy controls. While, there were non-significant decrease (p> 0.05) in (E2, Ca and HDL) levels in women taking oral contraceptive when compared to the normal healthy controls. On the other hand, a significant increase (p˂ 0.05) was recorded in LDL level in menopausal women compared to that of the normal healthy controls whereas, no-significant increase (p˃ 0.05) in the LDL level in women taking oral contraceptives when compared to the control women.

Abstract Cerebral stroke is one of the most important issues for modern medicine. Despite the fact that numerous activities have been undertaken for the purpose of raising awareness and significance of prevention, this condition still remains one of the main reasons behind disability. The objective of the work was to assess the effects of the type of therapy, age and period from the incident occurrence, on the progress of rehabilitation of imbalance and body stability observed in a group of researched patients, on the basis of results obtained according to the Berg Balance Scale, tandem balance test, Kwolek’s loading symmetry index and Timed Up and Go test. The test group comprised of 55 post-stroke patients. The group consisted of 29 women (52.73%) and 26 men (47.27%). The average age of the subjects was 61.02 years (age range between 33-85 years). A number of the patients were subjected to rehabilitation with the use of classic kinesitherapy, whereas the remaining group underwent rehabilitation based on the proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation method (PNF).

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of yogic practices on cardio-vascular efficiency. Material and methods: Total Forty (40) subject’s boys/girls were selected as the sample of the study through the random sampling and their age ranged between 20 to 25 years from the Department of Physical Education, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. The subjects were divided into two groups comprising 20 subjects in each group, namely group “A” (the experimental group) performs yogic practices (Asanas, Pranayamas and Kriyas) and group “B” (the control group) served as control. Statistical technique: for the assessment of the cardiovascular efficiency through Harvard step test pre and post-test was conducted and t-test was applied for the analysis. Result: revealed that there exist a significant difference between group A and group B, at .05 level of significance. On the basis of the pre and post-test among experimental and control group, experimental group found better than the control group on cardiovascular efficiency and significant result were found in this study.

Introduction: Acute stroke patients have problems with toilet activities. Independent toilet activity in hospitalized patients is important for dischargee to home. Hypothesis: Lower limbs function, trunk control and cognitive function are important factors of early independent toilet activities and discharge to home within 7 days. Methods: We included acute ischemic stroke patients who 1) were admitted from June 2017 to May 2018 and 2) received early rehabilitation treatment. Patients with disturbed level of consciousness were excluded. Functional independence measure (FIM) scale of 6 or 7 was defined as independence and FIM scale of 5 or less as dependence. We evaluated Brunnstrom Recovery Stage (BRS) of arms, fingers and lower limbs, trunk control test (TCT), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and investigated significant factors of early independent toilet activities and discharge to home within 7 days. Results: One-hundred twenty-four patients met our inclusive criteria. Their average age was 75.8 years, male gender of 63.7%, median BRS of arms, fingers and lower limbs was 5, 5 and 5, median TCT score and MMSE score were 94 and 24.7, respectively. Fifty-three patients were independent in toilet activity and 73 patients were dependent. All patients with independent toilet activity discharged to home within 7 days. In independent and dependent toilet activity patients, an average age was 73.6 and 77.4 (p<0.05), median BRS of arms was 5 and 5 (p<0.01), median BRS of fingers was 6and 5 (p<0.01), median BRS of lower limbs was 5 and 5 (p<0.01), median TCT score was 100 and 61 (p<0.01), and median MMSE score was 27.8 and 22.5 (p<0.01), respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that MMSE score (p<0.01), TCT score (p<0.01), and BRS of lower limbs (p<0.05) were independent factors for independent toilet activity and discharge to home. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for early discharge to home demonstrated that cut-off values of MMSE score, TCT score and MRS of lower limbs were 27 or more, 87 or more and 5 or more, respectively. Conclusion: BRS as lower limbs function, TCT as trunk control and MMSE as cognitive function were important factors of early independent toilet activities and early discharge to home.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of vocabulary enhancement activities on vocabulary learning in an ESP course. In designing the activities, technical terms on journal entries were chosen for the acquisition of language necessary for the successful implementation of accounting major&rsquo;s professional tasks. The desirable difficulty approach and the four strands principle,focused input, meaning-focused output, language-focused learning and fluency development, were guidelines in combining subject matter and English language learning. To test the result of the activities, the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale was employed to measure students&rsquo; knowledge of 50 vocabulary items. Subjects of the ESP course in discussion comprised 200 accounting juniors in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China. Half of them in Group A read the texts and did matching exercises and translation exercises. The other half in Group B read the texts and practiced journal entry activity, targeting at accounting concepts and terminologies. The results revealed that Group B gained better results than Group A at a post-test. After the test a reflection on the vocabulary activities was gathered among the participants of Group B. The feedback further proved that the students did benefit from the enhancement activities on selected technical terms.

Background of the study: Stroke is a major public health problem that ranks in the top four causes of death in most of the countries and is responsible for a large proportion of the burden of neurologic disorders. Patients with stroke have poor balance because they cannot control dynamically the size of the base of support or the location of the line of gravity. Perturbation training undergoes the maximal sway possible without losing his balance. Objective of the study: The objective of the study is to find the effects of rolling board perturbation training on balance among hemiparetic stroke patients. Methodology: Thirty clinically diagnosed hemiparetic stroke patients were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. They were randomly allocated into two groups (Group A and Group B) consists of 15 subjects each. Group A received conventional physiotherapy alone and group B received rolling board perturbation training along with conventional physiotherapy. Intervention lasted for 4 weeks, three days in a week and one hour per day. Balance was measured before and after 4 weeks of intervention by berg balance scale. Conclusion: Both conventional physiotherapy alone and rolling board perturbation training along with conventional physiotherapy significantly improved balance among hemiparetic stroke patients. When comparing both rolling board perturbation training along with conventional physiotherapy is more effective than conventional physiotherapy alone in improving balance among hemiparetic stroke patients.

Objectives: The overall goal of the study was to foster self-directed learning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills in 1st-year medical students. Another goal was to create interest in learning by making it more interactive. As per the requirement of a competency-based medical education curriculum, we tried to use a novel teaching method called Flipped classroom method to meet our goals. Hence, the objectives of this study were: (1) To compare the effect of flipped classroom method and didactic lecture on students’ performance in the topics from renal physiology by MCQ test. (2) To obtain students’ perception about flipped classroom method in learning physiology. (3) To obtain teachers’ perception about flipped classroom method in teaching physiology. Materials and Methods: Flipped classroom method was introduced for teaching two topics in renal physiology for first MBBS students. This cross-over experimental study included 112 first M.B.B.S. students, after taking their informed consent and Ethics Committee permission. They were divided into two groups according to odd and even roll numbers. In the first part of the study, Group A (odd roll numbers) attended the didactic lecture on Renal Clearance (RC) and Group B (even roll numbers) attended the didactic lecture on Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). These topics were taught by two different teachers in two different classrooms. They were administered pre-test and post-test in the form of case-based MCQs which tests knowledge, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills on the topic. In the second part, two groups were swapped. Group A attended flipped class for G.F.R. and Group B attended flipped class for RC. They were again administered pre-test and post-test in the form of the same MCQ test. The teacher remained the same for the particular topic. For the flipped class, students came prepared with the topic. They were provided with resource materials of the allotted topic 1 week prior, in the form of pre-recorded lectures and videos. Students’ feedback in the form of a questionnaire and teachers’ feedback in the form of the interview was obtained. Marks obtained by students after didactic teaching and flipped classroom method teaching were compared by “Student’s t-test.” Results: The post-test score of students in the flipped class was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than the post-test score of students in didactic class. More than 85% of students agreed and strongly agreed that the flipped classroom method improved their learning in renal physiology and it increased their confidence in answering the topic in the final exam. Near about 50% of students liked the flipped class method because of its interactive nature and discussion which was based on the application of knowledge. The teachers were more satisfied by flipped classroom method of teaching. Conclusion: Flipped classroom method is an effective teaching-learning method in physiology when compared with a didactic lecture.

Early detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and early aggressive treatment are recommended to delay chronic infection in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. The aim of this study was to assess a quantitative PCR (q-PCR) assay for the diagnosis of early P. aeruginosa colonization in 23 young CF patients (group A, age range 7–18 years) and to survey the eradication of P. aeruginosa in 10 young CF patients (group B, age range 5–18 years) after an initial antibiotic treatment. q-PCR results for consecutive sputum samples from each patient during a period of 18 months were compared with bacterial cultures during the same period plus an additional period of 12 months, and with concomitant clinical signs of pulmonary exacerbation. The q-PCR and bacterial cultures were negative for 17 of the 23 patients in group A and six of the 10 patients in group B during the study period. However, consecutive positive q-PCR results were observed for one patient in group A and three patients in group B, while the bacterial cultures for the same sputum sample remained negative. They preceded positive P. aeruginosa bacterial cultures at 7 and 8 months for two patients in group B. These positive results were associated with a worsening of the clinical status of patients, but pulmonary exacerbation appeared non-specific for the diagnosis of early P. aeruginosa colonization since pulmonary exacerbations were observed in patients in whom q-PCR or bacterial culture remained negative. In conclusion, q-PCR may be a useful additional tool to provide information on the P. aeruginosa status of CF patients.
