To evaluate the leaf volatile constituents of essential oil of Coleus zeylanicus and evaluate their anti-oxidant and anti-fungal activity. The Chemical composition of Coleus zeylanicus essential oil was determined using GC-MS and FT-IR analytical techniques. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH scavenging assay. The anti-fungal effect was tested against two potential pathogenic fungal strains - Candida albicans and Malassezia furfur using agar well diffusion method. The essential oil was profiled by the presence of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons 90.67% of their total composition followed by oxygenated monoterpenes and monoterpene hydrocarbons as 5.3% and 2.1% respectively. The GC-MS results showed 14 compounds from Coleus zeylanicus leaf EO representing 98.07% of the total oil composition. The major component was identified as a-Gurjunene (35.94%), a-bisabolol (10.82%) and G-selinene (4.26%). EO showed remarkable antioxidant activity values of IC50 = 59.78± 3.21µg/ml by DPPH scavenging assay. The essential oil showed interesting anti-fungal effects against two pathogenic fungal strains. The most sensible strains to Coleus zeylanicus EO was Malassezia furfur (32.00±0.50mm) compared to that of Candida albicans (15.00±1.25mm). Hence, Coleus zeylanicus EO has potential application against fungal infection and oxidative stress-related diseases. However, further investigations are necessary to isolate and investigate the action mechanism of these bioactive compounds.

Acacia catechu willd has a great importance due to its medicinal properties. It is a historical plant; widely used in traditional medicine especially in Asia. Modern technology has made easy to study pharmacological properties of traditional medicine so great interests have been developed in historical traditional plants. There is a great use of Acacia catechu in dermatology and sore throat. Now a days antimycotic, hypoglycemic activity has also been reported. Phenols or polyphenols are the natural chemicals which are found in Acacia catechu. Phenolic compounds have similar basic structural chemistry as that of aromatic compounds and they contain a basic phenolic ring. They have an astringent effect and are widely used in tanning of lathers. They are also used in cancer treatment, dermatological disorders and possess anti-microbial activity. One of the most important feature of these compounds is their anti-oxidant effect. Due to the presence of these compounds in Acacia catechu willd; this plant has gained a vital role in medicinal use. In this paper, effort is made to sum up the researches which have been done on Acacia catechu willd which will be helpful to know that how many aspects of this plant are yet to be explored.

Abstract Eucalyptus globulus varies from a multi-stemmed shrub on exposed sites to a very tall forest tree, 70-80 m tall, with a large open crown or a medium-sized woodland tree to 20 m. Although found mainly in Tasmania, it also occurs in southern Victoria. The wood is strong and moderately durable and is used for light and heavy construction and regarded as being excellent for cellulose and paper manufacture. It is slightly to moderately salt-tolerant (Marcar et al., 1995). Production from plantation-grown trees is mainly for pulpwood, but also for other timber products. It is an important plantation species in Australia and has experienced outstanding success as an exotic in many countries, with over 1 million ha of plantations established (Eldridge et al., 1993). The species is grown extensively on the Iberian Peninsula, Yunnan province in China and in Chile, for timber, pulp and oil production. The essential oil of E. globulus has dominated the market for cineole-rich oils since soon after the inception of the industry in 1852 (Doran and Saunders, 1993).

Pomegranate is a large compound of the eastern diets, yet no research has been performed on this product. The pomegranate, Punica granatum belongs to family Lythraceae is an ancient, mystical, unique fruit borne on a small long-living tree cultivated throughout the mediterranean region, as far north as the Himalayas, in Southeast Asia, and in California and Arizona in the United States. Punica granatum is a fruit bearing deciduous herb or small tree growing between 5-8m tall. Punica granatum leaves are used as bitter tonic in fever and used in pneumonia, flu, mouth and lip infections. In recent studies plant has shown anti fungal, immunosuppressant and anti diabetic activity. It is also used in treatment of heart problems, stomach disorders, dental care, cancer, anaemia, osteoarthritis. Punica including Punica protopunica are known to exhibit strong anti oxidant activity. The extraction was subjected to assay by Reducing power, Hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay, DPPH methods for evaluation of anti oxidant activity. Results revealed that the pomegranate can be categorized as a leave with extremely high anti oxidant potential.

Background: The essential oil from the Acantholimon genus have been an integral part of the traditional food additive in Middle East. Most of the plants in Acantholimon genus have not been studied scientifically. The aim of this study is to investigate the chemical composition, antibacterial, insecticidal and anti-oxidant activities of three Acantholimon species including Acantholimon atropatanum, A. gilliatii and A. tragacanthium. Method: The essential oils of the aerial parts were extracted by hydrodistillation. Chemical constitutions were identified by gas chromatography- mass spectroscopy technique, also their toxicities were assessed against the two important grain products pests, Oryzeaphilus mercator and Tribolium castaneum. Antibacterial activity was assessed against the three foodborne bacteria that include Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus based on the disc diffusion assay. Free-radical-scavenging property was identified based on 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. Results: 2-hexahydrofarnesyl acetone was the main compound in A. gilliatii and A. tragacanthium, whilst farnesyl acetone, heptacosane and germacrene D were the principal components of A. atropatanum essential oil. These oils exhibited 40-90% mortality of O. mercator and/or T. castaneum at a dose of 12 μl/l air after 48h of exposure, and exhibited significant free-radicalscavenging property (RC50 = 3.7 × 10-3 - 8.3 × 10-3 mg/ml). The oils of A. tragacanthium and A. gilliatii showed a weaker antibacterial activity compared to A. atropatanum. Conclusion: A. atropatanum, A. gilliatii and A. tragacanthium essential oils had significant insecticidal and anti-oxidant properties. They also showed week to moderate antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus.

Background: The Eucalyptus globulus extractions have been used by the traditional healers to treat diseases in the study area. Our previous study revealed that the essential oil has antimicrobial and antifungal activity. This study determined phytochemical analysis, skin irritation, acute and subacute toxicity of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil in mice and rats. Methods: The phytochemicals were analyzed using GC-MS mass spectrometry. The acute toxicity study was determined at three dose levels of 1500 mg/kg, 1750mg/kg, and 2000 mg/kg. The essential oil limit test at a dose of 1000 mg/kg was administered to mice for 28 consecutive days for sub-acute toxicity study. The mice mortality, behavioral change, injury and other signs of illness were recorded once daily. Biochemical parameters were evaluated. Liver and kidney were analyzed for histopathological analyses. The 5% ointment formulation was applied to the rat skin to determine skin irritation effects. Results: The Eucalyptus globulus essential oil showed no effect on the mice at a dose of 1500mg/kg and below, but caused signs of toxicity and death at a dose of 1750mg/kg and above compared to the controls (p<0.05). The LD50 value was 1650 mg/kg. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the body weights, gross abnormalities of the organs and biochemical parameters compared to the control at 1000 mg/kg subacute toxicity study. No histopathological changes were detected in the organs tested. The 5% ointment formulation did not show any abnormal skin reaction. Discussion: In the present study, the Eucalyptus globulus essential oil was comparable with other studies in terms of both chemical composition and its effects on sub-acute and topical application. Conclusion: This toxicity study demonstrated that Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is nontoxic at a relatively lower concentration.
