As a hazardous waste, water pickling liquors must be properly treated. An alternative consists of promoting the formation of ferrous salts from this residue due to their higher ferrous content. Since FeCl2·4H2O is widely used in several applications, obtaining pure crystals of this material appears to be an interesting prospect. However, this compound has scarcely been investigated. In the present work, FeCl2·4H2O crystals were obtained from water pickling liquors. Their structural and morphological characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy as well as Mössbauer spectroscopy. In addition, the photoluminescence study of the obtained samples was also assessed. It was observed that after some aging time, the obtained crystals changed in colour from green to more yellowish. As such, the aged sample was also evaluated, and their structural characteristics were compared with the original crystals. Despite this, the obtained crystals exhibit a FeCl2·4H2O structure, which is not modified with the aging of the sample.

This study investigated the tensile properties and deformation behavior of an aged Fe-26Mn-6Al-1C (mass%) alloy with a stacking fault energy of approximately 60 mJ·m−2. The results show that an ordered phase with a “short-range ordering” (SRO) structure formed after aging at 550°C for 10 h, further increasing the aging time to 48 h. Lamellar second-phase precipitates appeared at the austenitic grain boundaries. The aged sample at 550°C for 10 h exhibited an enhanced tensile strength (∼898 MPa) without notably sacrificing uniform elongation (∼46.3%), which was mainly attributed to the relatively high strain hardening in the entire plastic deformation due to the synergistic effects of planar slip, twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP), microband-induced plasticity (MBIP), and especially the formation of short-range ordering.

This study examines the influence of various electrical parameters on the volume resistivity of the Viton fluoroelastomer. The transient current, the temperature dependence of volume resistivity, the voltage dependence of resistivity, and the surface morphology of Viton insulators are investigated for new and aged specimens. An accelerated aging process has been employed in order to simulate the natural aging of insulators in service. A detailed comparison between the new and aged samples is presented. The transient effect, which is a challenge to the resistivity measurement of insulators, has been investigated. The first 60 s of the resistivity measurement test showed a significant influence from the transient effect and should be excluded from the data. The volume resistivity of both new and aged samples decreased when the temperature increased. However, the resistivity of the aged sample was lower than the new one at all tested temperatures. When the temperature increased from 35 to 190 °C, resistivity decreased from 4.77 × 1010 to 6.99 × 108 Ω-cm for the new sample and from 2.6 × 1010 to 6.68 × 108 Ω-cm for the aged sample under 500 V. Additionally, the results from this study showed that the volume resistivity is inversely proportional to the applied voltage. Finally, scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs/images allowed us to closely examine the surface morphology of new and aged Viton samples. The surface of aged samples has been recognized with higher surface roughness and more significant surface cracks leading to poor performance under high voltage applications.

In recent years, polymeric insulators have been increasingly used for high voltage overhead transmission lines. The industry has replaced the insulators from ceramic to polymeric due to its lightweight and hydrophobic materials, not to mention the performance against pollutant contamination. In this study, an analysis of two 70 kV silicone rubber insulators is performed. The insulators had been in service for 30 years on transmission networks in volcanic area, exposed to intense UV solar radiation in midday, but also high precipitation occur throughout the year. The urge to understand better of polymeric aging behavior is important to improve the quality of the polymeric type insulators. In this study, these aged samples were then compared with virgin samples to identify the endurance and quality of polymer material. The surface deterioration and the change of chemical content were evaluated using advanced techniques, including Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). Meanwhile, the hydrophobic and visual inspection were also conducted. The hydrophobicity was evaluated by measuring the contact angle and assessed using IEC62073. The aged samples are categorized as hydrophobic class 1 due to the angle value of more than 60o. Physicochemical results showed that the aged sample compared with the virgin simple did not differ significantly given that the aged samples have been in-service for 30 years. Based on TG/DTA result, the percentage difference of weight loss between virgin and aged sample only lower than 4%. Then, from EDX result, the atomic percentage differences of C and O component compared with virgin sample are 4%-10%. Furthermore, the FTIR spectra indicates a normal aging condition of the silicone rubber, the difference in peak value of Si-(CH3)2 and OH compared with virgin sample is 10%.

Measurements have been carried out to compare stress-induced martensite stabilization aged (SIM-aged) and as grown shape memory Ni53Mn25Ga22 single crystals with the means of simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and acoustic emission (AE). Contrary to expectations, the position of the hysteresis practically did not change, whilst the width of the hysteresis increased, and the forward and reverse transitions became sharper in the SIM-aged sample. The energy distributions of acoustic hits showed regular power law behaviour and the energy exponents were slightly different for heating and cooling; this asymmetry had different signs for the SIM-aged and as grown samples. During heating, in accordance with the sharper transitions observed in the DSC runs, two well-marked jumps could be seen on the plot of cumulative number of the acoustic emission events. Therefore, these were attributed to high sudden jumps in the phase transition during heating observed in the DSC. The effect of the SIM-aging on the transformation entropy was also investigated and it was found that it was about 36% less in the case of the SIM-aged sample.
