The purpose of this study is to explore how participating in professional learning communities influenced teachers’ curriculum design skills during the recent curriculum reform in Taiwan. A cohort of high school teachers in suburban areas participated in a semester-long professional learning community, strictly based on a well-planned agenda as professional experimentation. The researchers adopted a qualitative method by devising an initial and a final interview protocol as a data collection instrument. The results identified four components during the PLC process leading to teacher change in the curriculum design process—active participation, consistent focus, supportive collaboration and collective learning and shared practice. The notions of hard and soft PLCs along with the implications are proposed.

This study examines whether changes over time in women’s criminogenic needs, particularly their financial needs, predict recidivism. In a 9-year longitudinal study, 304 women were interviewed repeatedly during 4.5 years after probation/parole began. Women provided data on both their gender-specific and gender-neutral criminogenic needs. Women’s average standing on each need and an index of their change in the need over time were computed and used to predict subsequent recidivism over the 3.4 years after the final interview. Women whose financial needs decreased were less likely to be rearrested and convicted relative to other women. The findings highlight the importance of considering a multifaceted and gender-specific definition of economic marginalization in both theory and practice. At the policy level, there is a need to reduce justice-involved women’s financial needs. In addition, further longitudinal research should be conducted to understand how different type of changes in women’s lives impact recidivism.

Background: The objective of this qualitative methods study was to develop the domains and items to support the content validity for the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Multiple Sclerosis Module for youth with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis. Methods: A literature review of multiple sclerosis–specific questionnaires and clinical research was conducted to generate domains. An expert panel composed of 12 neurologists who were pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis specialists provided feedback on the conceptual framework. Focus interviews with 9 youth with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis and 6 parents were conducted to develop the relevant domains and item content from the patient and parent perspective. In the cognitive interviews phase, 9 youth with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis and 6 parents provided feedback on item content, relevance, importance, and understandability of the pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis–specific domains and items. The final interview phase with 5 youth with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis and 5 parents comprised a pilot testing of the new PedsQL MS Module. Results: Eighteen domains were derived from the qualitative methods with item content saturation achieved at 100 items based on 40 interviews with 23 youth with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis aged 10-21 years and 17 parents. The domains derived include general fatigue, sleep/rest fatigue, cognitive functioning, tingling sensations, numbness sensations, physical weakness, pain, speech, balance, fine motor, vision, urination, constipation, bowel incontinence, worry, communication, treatment, and medicines. Conclusions: Qualitative methods involving 23 youth with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis and 17 parents in the domain and item development process support the content validity for the new PedsQL MS Module. Future plans include a national field test of the PedsQL MS Module scales and items.

The article aims to solve the problem of training teachers to work with children with disabilities. The purpose was to investigate the content of the programme for improving the professional competencies of secondary school teachers of the Russian language and literature called «Methodological aspects of preparing students with disabilities for the final interview in the Russian language.» To this end, analytical methods were used, such as retrospective analysis of scientific literature; content analysis of periodicals on the research problem; and practical methods (actualisation of personal experience in the system of advanced training of teachers in the direction of special (correctional) and inclusive education). This programme for improving the professional competencies of language teachers is based on the provisions of school linguodidactics and requirements of a special methodology of the Russian language. The suggested programme consists of two modules: the first discloses the mechanisms of organising oral interviews, state final exams and state exams in the Russian language for students with disabilities. The second module allows teachers to learn practical approaches to developing skills of oral speech in such students.

This paper sets out to clarify the criteria «Performance of a communicative task» and «Ability to consider the conditions of a speech situation» used for assessing the dialogue assignment at the Basic State Exam interview in the Russian language, as well as to outline directions for training conversational vocal responsiveness. The applied methodology included a correlation and discourse analysis of 9th-grade Russian students’ responses to the questions of the interlocutor-examiner, as well as a review of research and methodological sources. The author of the paper postulates that the fulfilment of the first criterion – «Performance of a communicative task» – entails an adequate interpretation of the question and consequent formulation of a detailed vocal response correlating with the question. A correlation analysis of interviews revealed that students’ inability to interpret questions and their insufficient apperception base generate such errors as violation of the subject domain of the question, question substitution, violation of the theme-rhematic structure of the answer, tautological character of the answer, poorly defined nominal group in the answer, absence of an answer to one of the questions in the series (question pair), formalistic answer. The second assessment criterion «Consideration of the conditions of a speech situation» – is correlated with the recipient factor, expressed in the speech code through the speaker’s performance of rapport-building and metalinguistic speech actions. A discourse analysis of interviews showed that students use numerous non-speech and nominal-speech units in their responses, which enable them to regulate their own mental activity, but appear to be invalid in terms of organising their speech with regard to a recipient. Vocalised pauses, puffs of sounds and filler phrases in the responses indicate tense speech production and a low level of lamprophony, thus making such responses difficult for the examiner to perceive. On the basis of the proposed interpretation of the criteria used for assessing dialogue speech, the author postulates the necessity of training speech responses in a dialogue situation, which can be organised in the following areas: 1) enrichment of the apperception base; 2) training the interpretation of interrogative statements; 3) teaching rapport-building and metalinguistic speech actions aimed at regulating mental activity and considering a recipient. The obtained results can be used for improving the methodology of preparing students for task 4 of the final interview in the Russian language, strengthening the continuity of training for interview at the 9th and Unified State Exam at the 11th grade.

Wheelchair securement designs for fixed route, large accessible transit vehicles (LATVs) often create difficulties for passengers who use wheelchairs and operational inefficiencies for public transit agencies. Recent innovations in wheelchair securement technology for LATVs may reduce these challenges. This field study builds on a recent lab study that used a full-scale LATV simulation apparatus to address similar knowledge gaps. The current study used a mixed-methods approach to explore the usability of two newer wheelchair securement systems currently installed in LATVs in Buffalo, NY: a 3-point, forward-facing (3P-FF) securement system and a semi-automated, rear-facing (SA-RF) securement system. Three groups of wheelchair users (manual wheelchair [MWC], power wheelchair [PWC], and scooter [SC] users; n = 40) completed a pre-study interview, four trips on the LATVs and accompanying surveys, and a final interview. Using multiple usability rating scales, findings indicated clear differences in ratings of difficulty and acceptability between securement systems by wheelchair user group, with the SA-RF outperforming the 3P-FF on most usability measures for MWC and PWC users. SC users consistently rated both securement systems as more difficult to use and the SA-RF securement as less acceptable than MWC and PWC users.
