The changes taking place in modern society and production naturally have an impact on the education system, making new requirements for it, which are associated not only with the professional qualities of a university graduate, but also with personal ones. These requirements are fixed in the federal state educational standards of higher education in the form of universal and professional competences. One of the directions that will contribute to the formation of personal qualities of a graduate is related to the training of students in search activities. We consider the issues of organising the search activity of students of a technical university in the process of studying higher mathematics. To do this, we have developed a technology for organising students' search activity based on the analysis of solutions to applied mathematical problems. We have identified three stages in the developed technology – preparatory, basic, and final. The goal of each stage is formulated both from the position of the student and from the position of the pedagogue. Also in the article we show an example of the practical implementation of the developed technology of organising the search activity of students of a technical university for the analysis of solutions to applied mathematical problems, which are reduced to calculating a certain integral. The proposed technology of organising students' search activities contributes to the development of their communication skills – students gain experience in preparing a report, presentation, public speaking, learn to answer additional questions, defend and argue their point of view.

Short-term forecasts of traditional streams from public health reporting (such as cases, hospitalizations, and deaths) are a key input to public health decision-making during a pandemic. Since early 2020, our research group has worked with data partners to collect, curate, and make publicly available numerous real-time COVID-19 indicators, providing multiple views of pandemic activity in the United States. This paper studies the utility of five such indicators—derived from deidentified medical insurance claims, self-reported symptoms from online surveys, and COVID-related Google search activity—from a forecasting perspective. For each indicator, we ask whether its inclusion in an autoregressive (AR) model leads to improved predictive accuracy relative to the same model excluding it. Such an AR model, without external features, is already competitive with many top COVID-19 forecasting models in use today. Our analysis reveals that 1) inclusion of each of these five indicators improves on the overall predictive accuracy of the AR model; 2) predictive gains are in general most pronounced during times in which COVID cases are trending in “flat” or “down” directions; and 3) one indicator, based on Google searches, seems to be particularly helpful during “up” trends.

IntroductionHealth campaigns have the potential to improve public awareness, but their impact can be difficult to assess. Internet search data provide information concerning online health information-seeking behaviour in the population and may serve as a proxy for public awareness to evaluate health campaigns. This study aimed to measure the impact of World Stroke Day (WSD) in China using Baidu search data.MethodsDaily search index values (SIV) for the term ‘stroke’ were collected from January 2011 to December 2019 using the Baidu Index platform. We examined the mean difference in SIV between the 4 weeks surrounding WSD (period of interest) and the rest of the year (control period) for each year by t-test analysis. The mean difference between the period of interest and the control period was also calculated. The joinpoint regression model was used to analyse the trends of internet search activity 30 days before and after WSD for each year (2011–2019). Finally, the top and rising queries related to stroke during the week of the campaign in 2020 were summarised.ResultsA significant mean increase in SIV of 418.5 (95% CI: 298.8 to 538.2) for the period of interest surrounding WSD was observed, 36.2% greater than the SIV during the control period (2011–2019). Short-term joinpoint analysis showed a significant increase in SIV 3 days before WSD, a peak on WSD and a decrease to the precampaign level 3 days after WSD. The rising related queries suggested that the public had increasing concerns about stroke warning signs, stroke prevention and stroke recovery during the campaign.ConclusionsThe WSD campaign increased internet search activity. These research techniques can be applied to evaluation of other health campaigns. Advancing understanding of public demand will enable tailoring of the campaign and strengthen health management.

Many active, inquiry-based learning activities nowadays rely upon the students’ capacity to perform efficient information research on the Internet. Study and Research Paths (SRPs) have been proposed to model inquiry learning, and successfully used as teaching formats in different areas. In an SRP the search for an answer to a generating question (Q0) leads to a sequence of derived questions and answers, which are modeled using a Q–A map. We have investigated the benefits of using SRPs and Q–A maps to improve Web-based inquiry learning. We designed an SRP for a course on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), belonging to an Engineering degree. The class-session SRPs revolved around Q0 questions such as ‘What is a «firewall»?’, ‘What are the main features of 5G?’ etc. Our results, based on the analysis of six courses conducted between 2015/16–2020/21, show that the SRP is an enriching tool for learning ICT: content expands beyond that of the traditional course and is maintained up-to-date. Students are engaged and motivated by the active-search activity. In addition, the SRP helps in improving the students’ skills in searching and selecting information on the Internet. The Q–A maps served both the students, to structure their Web inquiry, and the teacher, to monitor the learning study process.

Based on the analysis of the operational-search, labor and pension legislation of Russia, the article studies the specifics of pension provision for citizens who provided confidential assistance to operational unts of FPS of Russia. A comparative legal analysis of measures of social and legal protection of persons providing confidential assistance is carried out, taking into account the two main forms of assistance identified in the theory and practice of operational-search activity: contractual and non-contractual. Considering the measures of pension provision within of persons providing assistance on a non-contractual basis, the author notes the absence of legislative consolidation of the right of this category of persons to offset the period of assistance in the insurance experience provided for in Part 6 of Art. 18 of the Federal Law «About operatively-search activity». Investigating the issue of pension provision for persons providing confidential assistance on a contract basis, the author draws attention to the grounds for the emergence of legal relations between the confidant and the body carrying out operational-search activities, and clarification of the nature of these relations. A comparative legal analysis of the contract for covert assistance with labor and civil contracts is carried out. Based on the analysis of the norms of the operational-search, labor and pension legislation of Russia, there are three mandatory conditions necessary for offsetting the period of confidential cooperation of a citizen on a contractual basis in the insurance record: 1) the existence of a cooperation contract; 2) cooperation should be the main type of paid activity of the person; 3) the periods of assistance should have been preceded and / or followed by the periods of activity specified in Art. 11 Federal Law «On Insurance Pensions». It is concluded that it is necessary to amend Art. 18 of the Federal Law «About operatively-search activity».

PurposeA firm will respond to performance feedback, i.e. a comparison of its current performance with the goals to which it aspires, by means of changes in its search activity. There is an emerging body of literature that studies how such behavioral responses are shaped by important decision-makers inside firms. The study focuses on the corporate board – one of the most influential decision-making groups in terms of strategy. More specifically, the study aims to study the moderation effect of the size, turnover and age diversity of the board.Design/methodology/approachThe sample is based on the largest listed German automobile and manufacturing firms followed between the years 2001 and 2015. The sample is analyzed using fixed-effects panel data models.FindingsThe findings indicate that the age diversity of the corporate board and, partially, also the turnover of its members moderate firms' responsiveness to performance feedback. On the other hand, the size of the board does not seem to play a role. The study, therefore, supports the notion of taking into account the characteristics of the corporate board when analyzing strategic decision-making and points to areas for further research.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the literature by empirically testing the moderating effect of three characteristics of corporate boards that have not been largely tested in the literature to date.

The purpose of the article is to determine the features and legal grounds for the use of tools of operational and search activities in the pre-trial investigation. Subject of research: The subject of research is covert investigative (search) actions and operational and search measures. Methodology: dialectical method, formal logic methods, logical and semantic method, system analysis method, theoretical method, normative and dogmatic method, legal modeling method. The results of the study: Distinguishing between investigation and search measures, we apply the following principle: if the object of operational activities is already known to law enforcement officers we are talking about search measures, if not – about investigation measures. Practical consequences: The possibility of legal regulation of the use of tools of operational and search activity at the stages of criminal proceedings is determined. Value / originality: It is concluded that the list of operational and search measures also includes those that have no analogues with the CISAs and therefore operational and search measures do not duplicate the CISAs, but perform the task of ensuring the possibility of fulfilling the investigator’s instructions to conduct the CISAs.
