Polydopamine Induced Wettability Switching of Cellulose Nanofibers/n-Dodecanethiol Composite Aerogels

The novel wettability switchable cellulose nanofiber- (CNF-) based aerogel was conveniently prepared by polydopamine mediated composition of CNF and n-dodecanethiol. The wettability of aerogels can be controlled by adjusting the PDA and n-dodecanethiol loading content, which leads to a variation of water contact angle from 0-149°. The PDA was coated on cellulose nanofibers via hydrogen bonds and then n-dodecanethiol was anchored onto the scaffolds by Michael addition reaction, which was revealed by XPS and FTIR spectra. The composite aerogel can selectively absorb a series of oily liquids from the oil/water mixture, with the maximum absorption capacity of 68 g/g. This work presented a facile strategy to prepare wettability switchable CNF-based heterogenous aerogel and exhibited the potential of the composite aerogel for oil/water separation.

Three-dimensional graphene encapsulated hollow CoSe2-SnSe2 nanoboxes for high performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Construction of metal selenides with a large specific surface area and a hollow structure is one of the effective methods to improve the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. However, the nano-material easily agglomerates due to the lack of support, resulting in the loss of electrochemical performance. Herein, we successfully design a three-dimensional graphene (3DG) encapsulation-protected hollow nanoboxes (CoSe2-SnSe2) composite aerogel (3DG/CoSe2-SnSe2) via a co-precipitation method coupled with self-assembly route, followed by a high temperature selenidation strategy. The obtained aerogel possesses porous 3DG conductive network, large specific surface area and plenty of reactive active sites. It could be used as a flexible and binder-free electrode after a facile mechanical compression process, which provided a high specific capacitance of 460 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, good rate capability of 212.7 F g-1 at 10 A g-1, and excellent cycle stability due to the fast electron/ion transfer and electrolyte diffusion. With the as-prepared 3DG/CoSe2-SnSe2 as positive electrodes and the AC (activated carbon) as negative electrodes, an asymmetric supercapacitor (3DG/CoSe2-SnSe2//AC) was fabricated, which delivered a high specific capacity of 38 F g-1 at 1A g-1 and an energy density of 11.89 W h kg-1 at 749.9 W kg-1, as well as a capacitance retention of 91.1% after 3000 cycles. This work provides a new method for preparing electrode material.

Bio-Based Hydrogel and Aerogel Composites Prepared by Combining Cellulose Solutions and Waterborne Polyurethane

Hydrogel composites can be prepared from cellulose-based materials and other gel materials, thus combining the advantages of both kinds of material. The aerogel, porous material formed after removing the water in the hydrogel, can maintain the network structure. Hydrogel and aerogel have high application potential. However, low mechanical strength and weight loss of cellulose hydrogel due to the water dehydration/absorption limit the feasibility of repeated use. In this study, cellulose hydrogels were prepared using microcrystalline cellulose (MC), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) as raw materials. Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) was added during the preparation process to form cellulose/WPU composite hydrogel and aerogel. The influence of the cellulose type and WPU addition ratio on the performance of hydrogel and aerogel were investigated. The results show that the introduction of WPU can help strengthen and stabilize the structure of cellulose hydrogel, reduce weight loss caused by water absorption and dehydration, and improve its reusability. The mixing of cellulose and WPU at a weight ratio of 90/10 is the best ratio to make the cellulose/WPU composite aerogel with the highest water swelling capacity and heat resistance.

Fabrication, Structure, Performance, and Application of Graphene-Based Composite Aerogel

Graphene-based composite aerogel (GCA) refers to a solid porous substance formed by graphene or its derivatives, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), with inorganic materials and polymers. Because GCA has super-high adsorption, separation, electrical properties, and sensitivity, it has great potential for application in super-strong adsorption and separation materials, long-life fast-charging batteries, and flexible sensing materials. GCA has become a research hotspot, and many research papers and achievements have emerged in recent years. Therefore, the fabrication, structure, performance, and application prospects of GCA are summarized and discussed in this review. Meanwhile, the existing problems and development trends of GCA are also introduced so that more will know about it and be interested in researching it.

Silica-Bacterial Cellulose Composite Aerogel Fibers with Excellent Mechanical Properties from Sodium Silicate Precursor

Forming fibers for fabric insulation is difficult using aerogels, which have excellent thermal insulation performance but poor mechanical properties. A previous study proposed a novel method that could effectively improve the mechanical properties of aerogels and make them into fibers for use in fabric insulation. In this study, composite aerogel fibers (CAFs) with excellent mechanical properties and thermal insulation performance were prepared using a streamlined method. The wet bacterial cellulose (BC) matrix without freeze-drying directly was immersed in an inorganic precursor (silicate) solution, followed by initiating in situ sol-gel reaction under the action of acidic catalyst after secondary shaping. Finally, after surface modification and ambient drying of the wet composite gel, CAFs were obtained. The CAFs prepared by the simplified method still had favorable mechanical properties (tensile strength of 4.5 MPa) and excellent thermal insulation properties under extreme conditions (220 °C and −60 °C). In particular, compared with previous work, the presented CAFs preparation process is simpler and more environmentally friendly. In addition, the experimental costs were reduced. Furthermore, the obtained CAFs had high specific surface area (671.3 m²/g), excellent hydrophobicity, and low density (≤0.154 g/cm3). This streamlined method was proposed to prepare aerogel fibers with excellent performance to meet the requirements of wearable applications.
