The effective conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into cyclic carbonates requires porous materials with high ionic content and large specific surface area. Herein, we developed a new systematic post-synthetic modification strategy for synthesizing imidazolium-based hypercrosslinked ionic polymers (HIPs) with high ionic content (up to 2.1 mmol g−1) and large specific surface area (385 m2 g−1) from porous hypercrosslinked polymers (HCPs) through addition reaction and quaternization. The obtained HIPs were efficient in CO2 capture and conversion. Under the synergistic effect of high ionic content, large specific surface area, and plentiful micro/mesoporosity, the metal-free catalyst [HCP-CH2-Im][Cl]-1 exhibited quantitative selectivities, high catalytic yields, and good substrate compatibility for the conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates at atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa) in a shorter reaction time in the absence of cocatalysts, solvents, and additives. High catalytic yields (styrene oxide, 120 °C, 8 h, 94% yield; 100 °C, 20 h, 93% yield) can be achieved by appropriately extending the reaction times at low temperature, and the reaction times are shorter than other porous materials under the same conditions. This work provides a new strategy for synthesizing an efficient metal-free heterogeneous catalyst with high ionic content and a large specific surface area from HCPs for the conversion of CO2 into cyclic carbonates. It also demonstrates that the ionic content and specific surface area must be coordinated to obtain high catalytic activity for CO2 cycloaddition reaction.

Abstract Construction of metal selenides with a large specific surface area and a hollow structure is one of the effective methods to improve the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. However, the nano-material easily agglomerates due to the lack of support, resulting in the loss of electrochemical performance. Herein, we successfully design a three-dimensional graphene (3DG) encapsulation-protected hollow nanoboxes (CoSe2-SnSe2) composite aerogel (3DG/CoSe2-SnSe2) via a co-precipitation method coupled with self-assembly route, followed by a high temperature selenidation strategy. The obtained aerogel possesses porous 3DG conductive network, large specific surface area and plenty of reactive active sites. It could be used as a flexible and binder-free electrode after a facile mechanical compression process, which provided a high specific capacitance of 460 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, good rate capability of 212.7 F g-1 at 10 A g-1, and excellent cycle stability due to the fast electron/ion transfer and electrolyte diffusion. With the as-prepared 3DG/CoSe2-SnSe2 as positive electrodes and the AC (activated carbon) as negative electrodes, an asymmetric supercapacitor (3DG/CoSe2-SnSe2//AC) was fabricated, which delivered a high specific capacity of 38 F g-1 at 1A g-1 and an energy density of 11.89 W h kg-1 at 749.9 W kg-1, as well as a capacitance retention of 91.1% after 3000 cycles. This work provides a new method for preparing electrode material.

Due to its small size, large specific surface area and hydrophobicity, microplastics, and the adsorbed contaminants may together cause potential negative effects on ecosystems and human beings. In this study, kinetics and size effects on adsorption of Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) onto PE, PP and PET microplastic particles were explored. Results indicated that the PE and PET microplastics have the higher adsorption capacity for Cu(II), Cr(III), and Pb(II) than that for PP microplastic. The adsorption capacity was affected by microplastic types and metal species. Among the three metals, Pb(II) had the largest adsorption amount on microplastic particles, especially on PET particles. Moreover, the adsorption capacities of microplastics increase with the decrease of particle size. The metal adsorption capacity of <0.9 mm microplastics is greater than that of 0.9–2 mm and 2–5 mm microplastics. The size effect on metal adsorption was largest for PE microplastic. More attention should be paid in case of the coexistence of heavy metals and tiny PE and PET microplastics in the environment.

Pelagic clay is an emerging marine resource with strong hydrophilicity, fine particles and a large specific surface area. In this work, a 1T-MoS2/pelagic clay composite was fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis. In the composite, 1T-MoS2 nanosheets are evenly dispersed on the surface of the clay minerals, significantly reducing the agglomeration of MoS2. Compared with pure 1T-MoS2, the 1T-MoS2 nanosheets generated on the surface of pelagic clay have significantly smaller lateral dimensions and thicknesses. Moreover, the specific surface area is much larger than that of the pure 1T-MoS2 nanosheets fabricated by the same method, indicating that the active sites of the MoS2 sheets are fully exposed. In addition, the composite exhibited excellent hydrophilicity, leading to a high dispersibility in aqueous solutions. In this work, the composite was used as a catalyst in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and the conversion of 4-NP reached up to 96.7%. This result shows that the 1T-MoS2/pelagic clay composite is a promising catalyst in a variety of reactions.

Here we report new porous carbon materials obtained by 3D printing from photopolymer compositions with zinc- and nickel-based metal–organic frameworks, ZIF-8 and Ni-BTC, followed by high-temperature pyrolysis. The pyrolyzed materials that retain the shapes of complex objects contain pores, which were produced by boiling zinc and magnetic nickel particles. The two thus provided functionalities—large specific surface area and ferromagnetism—that pave the way towards creating heterogenous catalysts that can be easily removed from reaction mixtures in industrial catalytic processes.

Abstract With the improvement of environmental protection requirements, economical and efficient oily wastewater treatment methods have become a research hotspot. At the same time, the characteristics of microbubbles (large specific surface area, high zeta potential, rises slowly) make it very widely used in various fields, including the treatment of oily wastewater. There are many methods to generate microbubbles, and each method has its own applicable fields. In order to better apply microbubbles to the separation of emulsified, the experiment used a hydrocyclone to produce microbubbles. The ability of microbubbles to separate oil-water emulsions verified by the method of combining visual processing with oil content testing. The experiment shows that the hydrocyclone can generate a large number of small-sized microbubbles, and the microbubbles are stable in the emulsion for more than 30 minutes. In addition, the microbubbles can better float the emulsified oil and concentrate it on the water surface. After the treatment of microbubbles, the oily wastewater can be easily separated from oil.

Compared with precious metal catalysts, non-platinum catalysts have the advantages of low cost and high performance. Among them, the activated carbon (AC) with a large specific surface area (SSA) can be used as a carrier or as a carbon source of nonprecious metal/carbon system catalyst at the same time. Therefore, this paper uses cheap pine peel bio-based materials to prepare large surface area activated carbon and then compound with cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) to obtain a high-performance cobalt/nitrogen/carbon catalyst. The merits include AC@CoPc composite catalysts are prepared by precisely controlling the composite proportion of AC and CoPc, the atomically dispersed Co nanoparticles form and synergistically with N promote the exposure of CoNx active sites, and the Eonset of the catalyst treated with a composite proportion of AC and CoPc of 1 to 2 at 800 °C (AC@CoPc-800-1-2) is 1.01 V, which is higher than Pt/C (20 wt%) catalyst. Apart from this, the stability is 87.8% in 0.1 M KOH after 20000 s testing in compared with other AC@CoPc series catalysts and Pt/C (20 wt%) catalyst. Considering from the performance and price of the catalyst in practical application, these composite catalysts combine biomass carbon materials with phthalocyanine series, which will be widely used in the area of nonprecious metal catalysts.
