Abstract: This paper is aimed at presenting basic technical properties and possibilities of using the truck simulator owned by the Military Institute of Aviation Medicine (MIAM). The truck driving simulator is a stationary device, equipped with a six degrees of freedom (6 DoF|) motion system and reproducing the functionality of a truck on the basis of the Mercedes Benz Actros cabin. It is intended for conducting research as well as training truck drivers in simulated traffic conditions.

INTRODUCTION: A topic in aviation medicine that attracts much attention from the scientific community as well as from the media concerns medical incidents on board commercial airline flights. It was noticed that many papers on the subject were written by authors whose specialization was outside that of aviation medicine and that they sometimes made basic errors concerning the application of scientific principles of the subject. A review was undertaken to determine if there were any patterns to the observed errors and, if so, to consider whether recommendations might be provided that could reduce their frequency.METHOD: A literature search was undertaken of MEDLINE using PubMed for English-only articles published between January 1, 1974, and February 1, 2019, employing the following search terms: air emergency, air emergencies, air passenger, air travel, aircraft, airline, aviation, commercial air, flight, and fitness to fly. In addition, other relevant papers held in the personal collection of the authors were reviewed.RESULTS: Many cases of misinterpretation or misunderstanding of aviation medicine were found, which could be classified into eight main categories: references; cabin altitude; pressure/volume relationship; other technical aspects of aircraft operations; regulations; medical events; in-flight deaths; and automated external defibrillator.CONCLUSION: Papers were identified as having questionable statements of fact or of emphasis. Such instances often appeared to result from authors being unfamiliar with the subject of aviation medicine and/or the commercial aviation environment. Tourism sector provides a significant contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Republic of Indonesia, both through foreign exchange and economic turnover. Although the Indonesian tourism industry after the COVID-19 pandemic has changed with an emphasis on green and clean products, it is hoped that this sector will be lessened by the community compared to the previous era. Research and development of VR has been carried out in various fields such as games, education, aviation, medicine, the application of VR in tourism is still common, there is a need to implement tourism while staying at home. The results of the systematic literature review conducted provide an explanation of the starting point for research by applying VR and making 3600 videos for industrial tourism. Abstract: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive optical brain monitoring technology for mapping the functioning of the human cortex in response to sensory or motor activation. There is a growing interest in implementing fNIRS to monitor the cognitive performance of military pilots. The method relies on differences in hemoglobin absorption spectra depending on blood oxygenation. However, this method was relatively rarely utilized in aviation and aviation medicine. Therefore, we will provide a broad review of applying this method in various avenues of medicine and cognitive psychology, as well as cover its documented use in aviation and aviation medicine. In this review, we cover the following topics: 1) fNIRS in comparison to most commonly used neuroimaging methods, 2) fNIRS in the evaluation of human performance, 3) fNIRS application in aviation and aviation medicine, and 4) fNIRS-based Brain-Computer-Interface (BCI) to overcome cognitive restrictions and for optimizing pilot training. In conclusion, over the years, fNIRS has become a neuroimaging technique that contributes to making advances toward understanding the functioning of the human brain.

Abstract: The Military Institute of Aviation Medicine is subject to complex legal conditions resulting from the existence of legislative and executive bodies of the state and their subordinate organs. These conditions, customers and other stakeholders have an impact on the context of the organization. The integrated management system of WIML, which is compliant with ISO 9001:2015 [8], ISO 27001:2017 [6] and AQAP 2120:2016 [1] standards, systematizes individual scopes of activities so that the requirements of all stakeholders are met. The article presents the risk management model on the basis of which the risk management methodology of the Military Institute of Aviation Medicine was developed.

We are living in a sensor world. Sensors are used in the house, office, car, and other areas detecting our presence by turning lights on, adjusting room temperature, detecting fires, and many other tasks. Today sensor has become a “buzz word”, without which it is hard to imagine living. They play a vital role in all sectors including housing, industry, aviation, medicine, and automobiles to name a few. Sensors can be manufactured with many types of materials. However, sensors made of ceramics have significance and have advantages when compared to those made from other materials. This mini review examines ceramic sensors and their applications in various sectors including the materials used to build them and their functioning in different areas. The paper precisely reports ceramic sensors and their applications in industry, including the medical, automotive, and aviation sectors.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by multisystem involvement. Clinical management of this condition has unique aeromedical considerations and an impact on subsequent aeromedical disposition. A comprehensive decision matrix would greatly benefit aviation medicine practitioners in the management of aircrew and personnel in flying-related vocations who are diagnosed with SLE.CASE REPORT: We describe the aeromedical management of a military air traffic controller who was diagnosed with SLE after presenting with cutaneous lupus, nonscarring alopecia, symmetrical small joint polyarthropathy, leukopenia, and presence of SLE-specific antibody. She was treated with hydroxychloroquine and low-dose systemic glucocorticoids, and allowed to return to duties with a proximity restriction and a bar on field deployments and night duties.DISCUSSION: Several SLE manifestations may have either incapacitating or distracting effects on aircrew and personnel in flying-related vocations. Some medications used in the treatment of SLE may similarly impact on an individuals ability to safely execute flight or air traffic control duties. We propose an aeromedical disposition decision flowchart that would guide aviation medicine practitioners in the management of individuals diagnosed with SLE to ensure optimal and safe performance in their respective occupational settings.Seah BZQ, Chua CG.
