With Greenfield approaches becoming less popular among city councils, forms of densification are being sought out, the most common yet unprecedented form being infill housing. On grounds of this, other methods including apartments are being considered the best solution. For suburban cities, this runs the risk of ignoring fundamental suburban qualities that have been highly desired in New Zealand since settlement, such as open space, autonomous land ownership, and control over one’s own property. Considering ‘the state house’ as a foundational suburban housing model for New Zealand, the Hutt Valley becomes the focus of study for this thesis. This thesis proposes using infill as a viable solution and means of exploring suburban living to produce a model of densification that offers both continuity with and transformation of cultural and architectural traits of suburban living. It argues for more compact and affordable models that are easily applicable to current New Zealand suburbia and are more responsive to current households. By exploring suburbia at different scales and exploring the current housing layout, new forms of suburban density are formed, where flexibility and neighbourliness are prioritized. The resulting dwelling is arranged based on the varying social needs of humans, allowing inhabitants to define private, shared and public areas both internally and externally.

Abstract Pandemics recur every 30 to 40 years. Every pandemic that has ever occurred brings changes in architectural design. This study conducts a literature study of the effect of pandemics on adaptation of the design of the artificial environment. Particularly the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic on changes in human behavior and its adaptation to residential architectural designs. In this paper, a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis methods is used to get a deep and a very basic understanding based on the problem being observed. The uncertain conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic have resulted in humans realizing that they cannot avoid the spread of this virus, so that a new environment and lifestyle are formed to live with this virus in a better way. During Covid-19, a house must adapt so it can effectively protect its residents from infectious diseases and facilitate all activities that were previously carried out outside the house. Some of the adaptations needed for residential design during this pandemic are in: housing characteristics; housing layout; interior, building material and furniture; natural lighting and indoor air quality; exterior, outdoor, and landscape; and value.

Abstract - The city development is should give positive contribution to social development, on ideal situation. However this situation is not always similar with the expectation as well as theory. Several factors are be as the push factor to the movement, and the movement can be contradictive to negative conditions: (1). The high level land invasion by private sector to community on location. (2). The lack of development as well as training program in location, by the government and others. (3). The condition of high pressure of import handycract from another country including : shoes and other handycraft from leather. The similar things happen in Cibaduyut as housing settlement based on leather industry-activity. An important thing that should be highlighted is this analysis based on the strength and the opportunity of application concept of “system approach to architecture” (Handler : (1970)), which being completed with many supporting theories. Comprehensive analysis of physical condition social as well as regulation, is as the key factor to find the best model as the design solution of redevelopment sustainable settlement as well as sustainable landscape development in research location. Hopefully the model will relevant with the planning of High Speed railway (HSRT) Bandung-Jakarta which will be finished on 2021. Keywords: Housing Layout, Housing Morphology, Transit Oriented Developmen (TOD), System Approach to Architecture, Sustainable Tourism Settlement.

The traditional housing in Algeria are designed to adapt to the surrounding condition and desert climate. The internal housing layout and thermal comfort plays a significant role in the Algerian traditional housing design and standards. The historical, cultural, religion and climate of Algeria have significant influence on the design of its houses. This study of houses in the City of Menaa in Batna, Algeria, explained the traditional design of houses of the people of Amazigh, particularly Chaoui in the building of homes and shelters. Today, the condition of traditional houses in Menaa Batna, is far from satisfactory because the city has suffered lack of economic investment by the central government which resulted in significant deterioration of its traditional housing condition that lead to discomfort in term of thermal especially during winter. This research aims to analysis the current condition of these traditional houses and to propose improvement in term of thermal comfort to the occupier of these houses. The study used mixed methods namely literature review where the researcher used comparative approach from international case study; and descriptive analyses based on the questionnaire and observations. The results of the analyses enabled the researcher to recommend improvement to the condition of the houses using integrated solutions and techniques. These recommendations were designed to achieve a modern and environmentally acceptable thermal comfort in winter season for the houses, without losing the traditional architectural features of these old houses.

Abstract This article explores the spatial differentiation and integration between the post-disaster victims and the indigenous peasants 8 years after a rapid off-site resettlement oriented by governments in New Beichuan. Data were broadly collected from placement documents, questionnaires, interviews and site measurement by empirical research and on-site investigation in 2014. The resettlement plan was introduced and analyzed for housing resettlement, open space systems, public facilities allocation and resettlement policies. Based on statistical analysis of the questionnaire data and observation on the usage of the built environment, problems with the spatial usage and mismatches between the specific spatial requirements and subjective planning intention of integration are analyzed and preliminary findings are shown. The results showed that the excessive pursuit of speed and deficiency in economically self-sustaining efforts might contribute to insufficient attention given to spatial, social and economic aspects and leads to inevitable and long-standing problems, such as housing quality problems, neighborhoods management and security concerns, contradictions between the housing layout and local living habits, different spatial usage preferences between the indigenous peasants and post-disaster migrants, and disequilibrium of public facility allocation.

This study analyzes apartment building configurations in waterfront residential areas relative to water flow direction and assesses the waterfront impact on apartment construction planning. It surveyed 197 apartment buildings around Yangjaecheon, Gulpocheon, and Anyangcheon, three branches of the Han River, a major South Korean river, to ascertain the correlation between stream flows and apartment building configurations. The apartments were classified into four spatial-configuration categories relative to the adjacent stream’s flow axis—perpendicular, parallel, diagonal, and other—and three orientation categories—east- and/or west-facing, south-facing, and other. South-facing apartments were predominant around west- and north-flowing streams. The proportion of east- and/or west-facing apartments built and the percentage of south-facing apartments were relatively low, indicating that apartment building layouts are more diverse around north-flowing streams than around west-flowing streams. A t-test analysis of east- and south-facing apartments’ proportions relative to stream flow direction was statistically significant, and there were relatively higher percentages of east- and west-facing apartments near north-flowing streams than west-flowing ones. This suggests that the relationship with rivers is still important in urban housing in South Korea, and the importance of landscapes over the river is of increasing significance for planning urban settlements.
