This article explores the function of the ceramic cottage industry as a means of conserving local culture. This descriptive-qualitative study presents the efforts of ceramic craftsmen in Purwakarta, West Java, Indonesia in preserving their culture. With the theory of structural functionalism, it was found that there were still religious elements and traditions that participated in the preservation of this culture, even though the times had changed to modern. Because of that local tradition, there must be a lot of conservation efforts from the government so that the culture is not lost in the days. Even so, there are still many who appreciate both at the national and community levels for the results of the local culture.

The loss of fresh fruits after harvesting is not new since it has constantly been a challenge for humankind. The growing population in developing countries, where food shortages exist, require serious food security measures to address hunger and malnutrition. Present research focused on the development, fabrication and testing of mango pulp extractor to assist small-scale fruit farmers in the countryside with a view to minimizing fruit spoilage. The unit, whose major material was food grade stainless steel (SS-304), consists of major components such as teflon brushes mounted shaft, motor, main frame, hopper, extraction compartment, pulp outlet, fruit residue outlet, perforated sieve and bearings. After construction, the machine was tested at three feed rate (2.0, 2.5, 3.0 kg/min) and extraction speed levels (500, 900 and 1400 rpm). Each of these factors was replicated three times, which resulted into 3 × 3 × 3 factorial experimental design. The optimum operating parameters for maximum pulp yield, maximum extraction efficiency and minimum extraction losses were determined. The physicochemical analysis of the extracted pulp was also carried out. Results revealed a maximum pulp yield of 77.9%, highest extraction efficiency of 96.03% and highest extraction loss of 9.3%. The mango pulp extraction machine was found to be affordable, easy to operate and maintain. The breakeven point of the machine was found to be 40 h if the machine is operated at its peak capacity. Therefore, it is recommended for small-scale farmers and for cottage industry.

Traditional gochujang is well known for its distinguished flavor and taste. However, the safety of cottage industry gochujang products is uncertain, particularly, in terms of biogenic amine (BA) content which is not yet documented. The present study aimed to determine the level of BAs present in 35 traditional gochujang products nationwide. All gochujang products had considerable amounts of total BAs ranging from 52.95 mg/kg to 176.24 mg/kg. Individually, histamine and tyramine were either not detected or detected up to 16.94 mg/kg and 2.15–52.34 mg/kg, respectively. In all the tested gochujang products, putrescine, spermidine, and spermine were detected in the range of 7.60–56.72 mg/kg, 14.96–36.93 mg/kg, and 4.68–16.31 mg/kg, respectively. A total of 22 and 19 gochujang products had less than 1 mg/kg of cadaverine and histamine, respectively. The findings indicate that all the gochujang products tested herein had BA levels below the suggested toxicity limits recommended by the various regulatory authorities, which reveal that they are safe for human consumption.

PurposeThis study creates new knowledge that addresses issues significant enough to warrant intellectual engagement. It fills a gap in the academic and practitioner literature by examining a profitable yet understudied cottage industry (artisan vendors). It examines marketing concepts that influence dedication to authentic craftsmanship and artisans' willingness to continue in the industry.Design/methodology/approachThis study examines historical evidence and connects it with subjective and interpretive analyses from 29 in-depth interviews of today's US artisan vendors to identify sustainable marketing best practices for the industry.FindingsResearchers uncovered factors behind artisan vendors' willingness to stay committed to their craft and remain in the industry. From the findings of this study, marketing best practices (branding, brand communities and product adaptation while remaining authentic to their craft) were identified as tools for resilience and remaining a viable competitor in the marketplace.Originality/valueHistorically, artisan vendors have been engaging in marketing practices before terms defined their activities. Thus, this study is original in that it contributes to the academic literature by first conducting an analysis of the history of an understudied cottage industry (artisan vendors) starting in the Mesopotamian Era. The key marketing factors discovered in the historical study contributing to the resilience of this industry were then used to conceptualize a qualitative study of the highly profitable US artisan vendor industry.

In Malaysia, Cottage Industry is a major source of revenue for the villagers. It's mostly small-scale operations that rely on local resources and conventional skills, with low upfront costs and quick returns. However, due to a lack of new technologies, infrastructure, and knowledge transfer, the industry might not be thriving right now. The aim of this research is to evaluate the current roles, challenges, and gaps in Perak's CI. This study was carried out via face-to-face interview on 10 stakeholders from different agencies. This study shows a number of factors affect a community's socioeconomic development and CI business. Internal and external factors, such as interest and self-motivation, as well as the positions of various organisations, as well as family and community support, all contribute to this.

Cottage Industry in Malaysia contributes key economic revenues for the village population. It is mainly small-scaled operations, using local resources and traditional skills with very low investments but fast returns. However, the industry may not be flourishing currently due to the lack of modern technology, facilities and knowledge transfer in place. Aim of this study is to determine the CI's current positions, challenges, and gaps in the state of Perak. This study was carried out via a self-administered structured questionnaire that equally distributed throughout the Perak State (North Perak, Central Perak and South Perak) involving 300 respondents. The study shows that a community's socioeconomic development and CI sector are influenced by a variety of factors. It is due to both internal and external causes, such as interest and self-motivation, as well as the positions of different organisations, as well as family and community support.

I’m delighted the editor decided to include an extract from Bargaining in the Shadow of the Law: The Case of Divorce in this volume, and I appreciate the generous comments of Professors Batra, Hollander-Blumoff, and Tippett concerning the article’s importance to the development of dispute resolution scholarship. At least if measured by citations, the article turned out to be seminal to a degree I would never have anticipated in 1979. A 2012 empirical study determined that it is among the one hundred most cited law review articles of all time. Indeed, it ranked nineteenth. A good title obviously helps. In the future, I fear its ranking may be at risk—the phrase “bargaining in the shadow” has become so well known that the metaphor is increasingly invoked without a citation to our article as the scholarly source. So be it; we’ve had a good run. I am comforted by Rebecca Hollander-Blumoff’s observation that the “article provided a template for a cottage industry of other explorations of bargaining in the shadow of the law” outside the divorce context....
