Humic acid (HA) is a specific and stable component of humus materials that behaves similarly to growth stimulants, esp. auxin hormones, contributing to improving growth indices and performance of plants. As a rich source of HA, vermicompost (VC) is also a plant growth stimulating bio-fertilizer that can enhance growth indices and performance in plants. The purpose of the present study is to compare the influence of VC enriched with bacterial and/or fertilizer, commercial humic acid (CHA) extract, and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) on improving growth characteristics and performance of rapeseed under greenhouse conditions. The results showed the complete superiority of VC over the CHA and IAA (approximately 8% increase in the dry weights of root and aerial organ and nearly three times increase in seed weight). The highest values of these indices were obtained with VC enriched with Nitrogen, Sulfur, and Phosphorus, Azotobacter chroococcum and Pseudomonas fluorescens; the lowest value was obtained with VC enriched with urea. Additionally, the application of 3% VC and the control involved the highest and lowest values in all traits, respectively. The SPAD (chlorophyll index) value and stem diameter were not significantly affected by different application levels of VC. Overall, the applications of IAA and the CHA were not found to be suitable and therefore not recommended.

In video processing, background initialization aims to obtain a scene without foreground objects. Recently, the background initialization problem has attracted the attention of researchers because of its real-world applications, such as video segmentation, computational photography, video surveillance, etc. However, the background initialization problem is still challenging because of the complex variations in illumination, intermittent motion, camera jitter, shadow, etc. This paper proposes a novel and effective background initialization method using singular spectrum analysis. Firstly, we extract the video’s color frames and split them into RGB color channels. Next, RGB color channels of the video are saved as color channel spatio-temporal data. After decomposing the color channel spatio-temporal data by singular spectrum analysis, we obtain the stable and dynamic components using different eigentriple groups. Our study indicates that the stable component contains a background image and the dynamic component includes the foreground image. Finally, the color background image is reconstructed by merging RGB color channel images obtained by reshaping the stable component data. Experimental results on the public scene background initialization databases show that our proposed method achieves a good color background image compared with state-of-the-art methods.

AbstractThe telomerase holoenzyme is critical for maintaining eukaryotic genome integrity. In addition to a reverse transcriptase and an RNA template, telomerase contains additional proteins that protect the telomerase RNA and promote holoenzyme assembly. Here we report that the methyl phosphate capping enzyme (MePCE) Bin3 is a stable component of the S. pombe telomerase holoenzyme. Bin3 associates with the telomerase and the U6 snRNA through an interaction with the recently described LARP7 family member Pof8, and we demonstrate that these two factors are evolutionarily linked in fungi. Our data suggest that the association of Bin3 with telomerase is independent of its methyltransferase activity, but rather that Bin3 negatively regulates TER1 levels and telomere length. Taken together, this work yields new insight into the composition, assembly, and regulation of the telomerase holoenzyme in fission yeast as well as the breadth of its evolutionary conservation.

Neuronal excitability is controlled primarily by γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central and peripheral nervous systems of vertebrate as well as invertebrate organisms. Besides its recognized neurotransmitter functions, GABA also plays a fundamental role in neurogenesis and synaptogenesis during embryonic development. In addition, GABAergic mechanisms are also involved in disorders of various peripheral tissues, ranging from diabetes to hypothyroidism to inflammatory responses. The discovery of the molecule and the history of its biosynthetic pathways in vertebrate and invertebrate phyla are summarized here. The occurrence and distribution of GABA, GABA-synthesizing enzymes, and receptors to GABA in the freshwater polyp Hydra vulgaris (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa), endowed with an early evolved nervous system, are discussed in relation to possible interactions with the microbiota, a stable component of Hydra polyps; their contribution to the evolution of nervous systems through microbe–neuronal interactions is proposed.

The paper describes the features and components of the academic course content and teaching techniques aimed at forming the pedagogic position (a set of pedagogical knowledges, skills, competences, values, and attitudes) of a doctor in young resident physicians. This position contributes to an effective health-oriented lifestyle dissemination and adoption, especially in patients with chronic diseases. It reflects a new perception of physician’s vocational duties, including care for patients’ life and their need for psychological support. Biopsychosocial approach to health and disease was chosen as a conceptual core of the academic course content and methodology design, specially elaborated to unite pedagogical aspects of the physician’s job with the clinical ones. The set of methods aimed at doctor’s pedagogical position formation and development of professional reflection, values and attitudes included lecturing, interviewing, case studies and clinical cases analysis, discussion, questionnaires, brainstorming, trainings and testing. Eighty-six resident physicians were observed within this study. Such components of the pedagogic position as knowledges, skills, attitudes and motivation showed more dynamics, whereas personal traits were seen as a more static and stable component of the pedagogic position in resident physicians. A remarkable divergence of progress was elicited between doctors of various specialties.

Diagnostics of industrial machinery is a topic related to the need for damage detection, but it also allows to understand the process itself. Proper knowledge about the operational process of the machine, as well as identification of the underlying components, is critical for its diagnostics. In this paper, we present a model of the signal, which describes vibrations of the sieving screen. This particular type is used in the mining industry for the classification of ore pieces in the material stream by size. The model describes the real vibration signal measured on the spring set being the suspension of this machine. This way, it is expected to help in better understanding how the overall motion of the machine can impact the efforts of diagnostics. The analysis of real vibration signals measured on the screen allowed to identify and parameterize the key signal components, which carry valuable information for the following stages of diagnostic process of that machine. In the proposed model we take into consideration deterministic components related to shaft rotation, stochastic Gaussian component related to external noise, stochastic α-stable component as a model of excitations caused by falling rocks pieces, and identified machine response to unitary excitations.

Abstract Background Maternal sub-threshold and non-clinical depression and its possible outcomes on offspring internalizing/externalizing symptoms has received growing attention in recent years because of its significant worldwide prevalence. Methods Through a Latent State-Trait Analysis approach (LST), this longitudinal study aimed to identify a stable component of non-clinical maternal depression across a temporal interval of 6 years (measured through the Symptom Check-List-90/R) and to determine the effect of this component on children’s emotional and behavioral functioning (measured through the Child Behaviour Check-List) at age 12 years. Results LST analysis showed that maternal depressive symptoms tended to remain stable within individuals across 6 years of observation strongly contributing to children’s internalizing/externalizing and dysregulation symptoms. Conclusions The current longitudinal analysis of maternal and child data revealed that a stable component of maternal depressive symptoms reliably predicted a wide range of child emotional and behavioral symptoms at 12 years of age.

Repetition suppression (RS), i.e., the reduction of neuronal activity upon repetition of an external stimulus, can be demonstrated in the motor system using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). We evaluated the RS in relation to the neuroplastic changes induced by paired associative stimulation (PAS). An RS paradigm, consisting of 20 trains of four identical suprathreshold TMS pulses 1 s apart, was assessed for motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) in 16 healthy subjects, before and following (at 0, 10, and 20 min) a common PAS protocol. For analysis, we divided RS into two components: (1) the ratio of the second MEP amplitude to the first one in RS trains, i.e., the “dynamic” component, and (2) the mean of the second to fourth MEP amplitudes, i.e., the “stable” component. Following PAS, five subjects showed change in the dynamic RS component. However, nearly all the individuals (n = 14) exhibited change in the stable component (p < 0.05). The stable component was similar between subjects showing increased MEPs and those showing decreased MEPs at this level (p = 0.254). The results suggest the tendency of the brain towards a stable state, probably free from the ongoing dynamics, following PAS.

Euroscepticism has become a stable component of the European Parliament. But is there one distinct Euroscepticism in the European Parliament or do various types exist there? Departing from the widely accepted definitions of hard and soft Euroscepticism, we analysed the behaviour of Eurosceptical groups in the European Parliament in order to assess how they differ. Using data from parliamentary questions, we argue that there are substantial differences between these two groups. This suggests that hard and soft Euroscepticisms do not represent different degrees of one phenomenon, but instead refer to two fundamentally different stances towards European integration.
