Abstract Background Differences in face processing in individuals with ASD is hypothesized to impact the development of social communication skills. This study aimed to characterize the neural correlates of face processing in 12-month-old infants at familial risk of developing ASD by (1) comparing face-sensitive event-related potentials (ERP) (Nc, N290, P400) between high-familial-risk infants who develop ASD (HR-ASD), high-familial-risk infants without ASD (HR-NoASD), and low-familial-risk infants (LR), and (2) evaluating how face-sensitive ERP components are associated with development of social communication skills. Methods 12-month-old infants participated in a study in which they were presented with alternating images of their mother’s face and the face of a stranger (LR = 45, HR-NoASD = 41, HR-ASD = 24) as EEG data were collected. Parent-reported and laboratory-observed social communication measures were obtained at 12 and 18 months. Group differences in ERP responses were evaluated using ANOVA, and multiple linear regressions were conducted with maternal education and outcome groups as covariates to assess relationships between ERP and behavioral measures. Results For each of the ERP components (Nc [negative-central], N290, and P400), the amplitude difference between mother and stranger (Mother-Stranger) trials was not statistically different between the three outcome groups (Nc p = 0.72, N290 p = 0.88, P400 p = 0.91). Marginal effects analyses found that within the LR group, a greater Nc Mother-Stranger response was associated with better expressive language skills on the Mullen Scales of Early Learning, controlling for maternal education and outcome group effects (marginal effects dy/dx = 1.15; p < 0.01). No significant associations were observed between the Nc and language or social measures in HR-NoASD or HR-ASD groups. In contrast, specific to the HR-ASD group, amplitude difference between the Mother versus Stranger P400 response was positively associated with expressive (dy/dx = 2.1, p < 0.001) and receptive language skills at 12 months (dy/dx = 1.68, p < 0.005), and negatively associated with social affect scores on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (dy/dx = − 1.22, p < 0.001) at 18 months. Conclusions In 12-month-old infant siblings with subsequent ASD, increased P400 response to Mother over Stranger faces is positively associated with concurrent language and future social skills.

In order to improve the classification accuracy and reliability of emotional state assessment and provide support and help for music therapy, this paper proposes an EEG analysis method based on wavelet transform under the stimulation of music perception. Using the data from the multichannel standard emotion database (DEAP), α, ß, and θ rhythms are extracted in frontal (F3 and F4), temporal (T7 and T8), and central (C3 and C4) channels with wavelet transform. EMD is performed on the extracted EEG rhythm to obtain intrinsic mode function (IMF) components, and then, the average energy and amplitude difference eigenvalues of IMF components of EEG rhythm waves are further extracted, that is, each rhythm wave contains three average energy characteristics and two amplitude difference eigenvalues so as to fully extract EEG feature information. Finally, emotional state evaluation is realized based on a support vector machine classifier. The results show that the correct rate between no emotion, positive emotion, and negative emotion can reach more than 90%. Among the pairwise classification problems among the four emotions selected, the classification accuracy obtained by this EEG feature extraction method is higher than that obtained by general feature extraction methods, which can reach about 70%. Changes in EEG α wave power were closely correlated with the polarity and intensity of emotion; α wave power varied significantly between “happiness and fear,” “pleasure and fear,” and “fear and sadness.” It has a good application prospect in both psychological and physiological research of emotional perception and practical application.

The vector optical beam with longitudinally varying polarization during propagation in free space has attracted significant attention in recent years. Compared with traditional vector optical beams with inhomogeneous distribution of polarization in the transverse plane, manipulating the longitudinal distribution of polarization provides a new dimension for the expansion of the applications of vector optical beams in volume laser machining, longitudinal detection, and in vivo micromanipulation. Two theoretical strategies for achieving this unique optical beam are presented in the way of constructing the longitudinally varying phase difference and amplitude difference. Relevant generation methods are reviewed which can be divided into the modulation of complex amplitude in real space and the filtering of the spatial spectrum. In addition, current problems and prospects for vector optical beams with longitudinally varying polarization are discussed.

Space-based synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a powerful tool for monitoring flood conditions over large areas without the influence of clouds and daylight. Permanent water surfaces can be excluded by comparing SAR images with pre-flood images, but fluctuating water surfaces, such as those found in flat wetlands, introduce uncertainty into flood mapping results. In order to reduce this uncertainty, a simple method called Normalized Backscatter Amplitude Difference Index (NoBADI) is proposed in this study. The NoBADI is calculated from a post-flood SAR image of backscatter amplitude and multiple images on non-flooding conditions. Preliminary analysis conducted in the US state of Florida, which was affected by Hurricane Irma in September 2017, shows that surfaces frequently covered by water (more than 20% of available data) have been successfully excluded by means of C-/L-band SAR (HH, HV, VV, and VH polarizations). Although a simple comparison of pre-flood and post-flood images is greatly affected by the spatial distribution of the water surface in the pre-flood image, the NoBADI method reduces the uncertainty of the reference water surface. This advantage will contribute in making quicker decisions during crisis management.

AbstractRamsey spectroscopy via coherent population trapping (CPT) is essential in precision measurements. The conventional CPT-Ramsey fringes contain numbers of almost identical oscillations and so that it is difficult to identify the central fringe. Here we experimentally demonstrate a temporal analog of Fabry–Pérot resonator via double-Λ CPT of laser-cooled 87Rb atoms. By inserting a periodic CPT pulse train between the two CPT-Ramsey pulses, due to the constructive interference of spin coherence, the transmission spectrum appears as a comb of equidistant peaks in frequency domain and thus the central Ramsey fringe can be easily identified. From the five-level Bloch equations for our double-Λ system, we find that the multi-pulse CPT interference can be regarded as a temporal analog of Fabry–Pérot resonator. Because of the small amplitude difference between the two Landé g factors, each peak splits into two when the external magnetic field is not too weak. This splitting is exactly linear with the magnetic field strength and thus can be used for measuring a magnetic field without involving magneto-sensitive transitions.

ConclusionsIn 12-month-old infant siblings with subsequent ASD, increased P400 response to Mother over Stranger faces is positively associated with concurrent language and future social skills.

Objectives: Electrocardiogram (ECG) can be affected by autonomic nerves with body position changes. The study aims to explore the ECG changes of children with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) when their posture changes.Materials and methods: Sixty-four children diagnosed with DCM were recruited as research group and 55 healthy children as control group. T-wave amplitude and QT interval in ECG were recorded, and their differences between supine and orthostatic ECG were compared in both groups. Subsequently, the children with DCM were followed up and the differences before and after treatment compared.Results: ① Comparisons in differences: Differences of T-wave amplitude in lead II and III, aVF, and V5 and differences of QT interval in lead II, aVL, aVF, and V5 were lower in the research group than in the control group. ② Logistic regression analysis and diagnostic test evaluation: The differences of T-wave amplitude in lead III and QT interval in lead aVL may have predictive value for DCM diagnosis. When their values were 0.00 mV and 30 ms, respectively, the sensitivity and specificity of the combined index were 37.5 and 83.6%. ③ Follow-up: In the response group, the T-wave amplitude difference in lead aVR increased and the difference of QT interval in lead V6 decreased after treatment. In the non-response group, there was no difference before and after treatment. When the combined index of the differences of T-wave amplitude difference in lead aVR and QT interval difference in lead V6, respectively, were −0.05 mV and 5 ms, the sensitivity and specificity of estimating the prognosis of DCM were 44.4 and 83.3%.Conclusions: The differences of T-wave amplitude and QT interval may have a certain value to estimate DCM diagnosis and prognosis.

This paper presents a method for the accurate and traceable measurement of the analog modulation index. A calibrated step attenuator was used as the main apparatus because it has a higher dynamic range and lower uncertainty than a spectrum analyzer or an oscilloscope. In amplitude modulation (AM), the modulation index is obtained from the amplitude difference between the carrier and the first sideband, as in the conventional method. The resolution and calibration uncertainties of the step attenuator were propagated to the measurement uncertainty of the modulation index. The uncertainty produced by the impedance mismatch and repeatability was also included. For frequency modulation (FM) and phase modulation (PM), the modulation index, β, was estimated (with the step attenuator) from the spectrum of each sideband through the nonlinear fitting of the Bessel function. Thus, the uncertainty of the fitting process was added to the uncertainty of the measurement. The three modulations, AM, FM, and PM, exhibited an expanded uncertainty (approximately 95% confidence level, k = 2) of 0.372% for 50% nominal depth of the AM, 88.8 Hz for the peak frequency deviation of 10 kHz, and 0.88 mrad for a 0.1 radian modulation index, respectively.
