Civic engagement is considered an important element of a healthy polity. Yet, many attempts to induce it fail, and experimental evidence on ‘what works’ to induce it is limited. Further, most experimental studies in this area of research focus on self-reported or low-cost proxy behavior outcomes. This paper describes a laboratory experiment with 809 participants to measure the impact of short behaviorally-informed messages on civic engagement in Uganda. We randomly assign participants to three treatment audio messages, applying different self-efficacy enhancing techniques, and one control audio, and measure their effect on two primary components of civic engagement: a lab measure of attention to political and pre-political information, and a real-world activity measure: attendance at a community meeting. We find that short audio messages can prompt people to pay more attention to pre-political information, but do not encourage overall civic engagement behavior, and some treatments produce a significant negative effect on our measures of engagement. We also find that a rights-focused message, closely modelling current civil society practice, does not generate increased civic engagement. We conclude that one-off behaviorally informed audio messages are insufficient to generate civic engagement in this context.

In a treatment facility in Nigeria community meeting has been an effective strategy in substance abuse management for identifying and addressing motivation in the treatment, insight and judgment, self-esteem, psychotic symptoms, readiness for treatment etc. The components of community meeting significantly facilitate effective transition in stages of change. This research utilised information from various meetings, individual interviews and Focus Group Discussion. The study also obtained information about substance use from files of 211 participants previously admitted from 2014 – 2020, descriptive statistics using SPSS version 20 was utilized in the analysis. The analysis show that male were predominant at 91.9% with a mean of 1.08, 24.6% primary substance of abuse is alcohol and the most common substance abused at 29%. Clients admitted with psychotic symptoms were 47.9% and 29% common problematic substance is cannabis and 65% of them are within the ages of 21-30 years, while 45% of them have used other psychoactive substances like opioids and cocaine. The qualitative study reveals that all the components of community meeting significantly contributed positively in the management of clients. Consequently, community meeting gives people experiencing addiction the opportunity to self-examine, express, and adapt to techniques of living a substance free life effectively. This gathering allows all categories of clients interact freely and respectfully given way to teaching, learning and mentoring. The researchers therefore, suggest that though substance abuse problems may not vary, however, the approach to addressing this problem should be tailored in a ways that reflects the people and their culture.

We present deep learning-based approaches for exploring the complex array of morphologies exhibited by the opportunistic human pathogen C. albicans. Our system entitled Candescence automatically detects C. albicans cells from Differential Image Contrast microscopy, and labels each detected cell with one of nine vegetative, mating-competent or filamentous morphologies. The software is based upon a fully convolutional one-stage object detector and exploits a novel cumulative curriculum-based learning strategy that stratifies our images by difficulty from simple vegetative forms to more complex filamentous architectures. Candescence achieves very good performance on this difficult learning set which has substantial intermixing between the predicted classes. To capture the essence of each C. albicans morphology, we develop models using generative adversarial networks and identify subcomponents of the latent space which control technical variables, developmental trajectories or morphological switches. We envision Candescence as a community meeting point for quantitative explorations of C. albicans morphology.

Abstract BackgroundProcess evaluations of public health programs are critical to understand if programs were delivered as intended and to identify improvements for future implementations. The aim of this paper is to describe a mixed methods process evaluation of the Sundara Grama intervention, which sought to improve latrine use and safe child feces disposal among latrine-owning households in rural Odisha, India.MethodsThe Sundara Grama intervention was delivered to 36 villages in Puri district by a grassroots NGO and included eight activities: palla performance (folk theater ‘edutainment’), transect walk, community meeting, community wall painting, mother’s meeting on child feces disposal, positive deviant household recognition, household visit, and latrine repairs. The process evaluation quantitatively assessed fidelity, dose delivered, and reach, and qualitatively examined recruitment, context, and satisfaction. Quantitative data collection included an activity observation survey, activity record, and endline trial survey. Qualitative data collection included an activity observation debrief and in-depth interviews with NGO mobilizers. Data collection took place during three time periods: during intervention delivery, immediately after, and several months post-implementation. For the quantitative data, a ‘delivery score’ was calculated for each activity, as well as the proportion of target participants in attendance. Qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis.ResultsMean delivery scores, reported as a percentage, were moderate to high. Household visit activities (97% general visit, 96% positive deviant visit) and the mother’s meeting (81%) had the highest delivery scores, followed by the palla (77%), transect walk (77%), and community meeting (60%). Activities were attended, on average, by 30–73% of latrine-owning households. Several factors aided delivery, including pre-intervention rapport building visits and village stakeholder support. Factors that hindered delivery included inclement weather, certain recruitment strategies, and village social dynamics related to caste and gender. With regard to satisfaction, participants and NGO mobilizers praised the palla but reported mixed reactions to other activities.ConclusionsOverall, the Sundara Grama intervention was implemented as intended and achieved good reach. The findings suggest edutainment and multi-level communication approaches are particularly beneficial, and offer lessons for community-wide programs on the importance of examining the implementer experience and broader context.Trial RegistrationThis trial is registered at clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03274245.

Abstract This article looks at what origin stories teach about the world and what kind of material presence they have in Southwestern Amazonia. We examine the ways the Apurinã relate to certain nonhuman entities through their origin story, and our theoretical approach is language materiality, as we are interested in material means of mediating traditional stories. Analogous to the ways that speakers of many other languages who distinguish the entities that they talk to or about, the Apurinã make use of linguistic resources to establish the ways they interact with different entities. Besides these resources, the material means of mediating stories is a crucial tool to narrate the worlds of humans and nonhumans. Storytelling requires material mediation, and a specific context of plant substances. It also involves community meeting as a space of trust in order to become a communicative practice and effectively introduce the history of the people. Our sources are ethnography, language documentation, and autoethnography.
