AbstractThe prefrontal-hippocampal dysfunction that underlies cognitive deficits in mental disorders emerges during early development. The lateral entorhinal cortex (LEC) is tightly interconnected with both prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus (HP), yet its contribution to the early dysfunction is fully unknown. Here we show that mice that mimic the dual genetic (G) -environmental (E) etiology (GE mice) of psychiatric risk have poor LEC-dependent recognition memory at pre-juvenile age and abnormal communication within LEC-HP-PFC networks throughout development. These functional and behavioral deficits relate to sparser projections from LEC to CA1 and decreased efficiency of axonal terminals to activate the hippocampal circuits in neonatal GE mice. In contrast, the direct entorhinal drive to PFC is not affected, yet the PFC is indirectly compromised, as target of the under-activated HP. Thus, the entorhinal-hippocampal circuit is already impaired from neonatal age on in GE mice.

Complex dietary polysaccharides such as β-glucans are widely used for their anti-inflammatory properties. We reported before that oral administration of Yeast β-glucan (YBG) in adult mice can help delay type 1 diabetes (T1D) onset and suppress gut inflammation through modulation of the structure and function of gut microbiota. Since juvenile age is characterized by profoundly changing immature gut microbiota, we examined the impact of oral treatment with YBG in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice at this age. Juvenile mice that received daily oral administration of YBG starting at 15 days of age for 7 or 30 days were examined for changes in gut microbiota, immune characteristics, and T1D incidence. Mice that received YBG for 30 days but not 7 days, showed considerable changes in the composition and diversity of fecal microbiota as compared to controls. Predictive functional analysis, based on 16S rDNA sequences, revealed overrepresentation of glycan biosynthesis and metabolism, energy metabolism, and fatty acid biosynthesis pathways in mice that received YBG for 30 days. Immune phenotype of the colon showed skewing toward immune regulatory and Th17 cytokines with increases in IL-10, IL-17, and IL-21 and a decrease in TNF-α, although increases in some pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1b, IFN-γ) were observed. Most importantly, mice that received YBG treatment for 30 days showed significantly suppressed insulitis and delayed onset of hyperglycemia compared to controls. Overall, this study suggests that oral consumption of YBG beginning at pre-diabetic juvenile ages could have positive maturational changes to gut microbiota and immune functions and could result in a delay in the disease onset in those who are pre-disposed to T1D.

Norway spruce is economically the most important tree species in Northern Europe; therefore, its productivity and vitality have key role in the forest management of this region. Tree height is directly linked to the productivity of the stand and is affected by growing conditions and tree genetics. Height increment in young stands determines the further development of the stand therefore, it is important to evaluate the effect of various factors on tree height growth during this stage and assess the possibilities to improve it with silvicultural measures and tree breeding. This doctoral thesis aims to assess the effect of microenvironmental conditions and genetics on the height increment of Norway spruce at a juvenile age in planted hemiboreal forests in Latvia. The doctoral thesis summarizes seven thematically linked scientific publications, and their results indicate the possibilities for substantial improvement of the growth of Norway spruce at a juvenile age. Tree height is considerably and significantly affected by the type of soil preparation and soil fertilization with wood ash a year before planting or by applying additional fertilizer during the planting process. Furthermore, the effect of these forest management measures lasts for at least the next 10 years. Providing favorable microenvironmental conditions considerably increases the proportion of spruces with lammas shoots, which in turn, increases the total height increment of these trees. A positive feedback loop exists between the presence of apical lammas shoots and the tree height increment, leading to increased tree height in young stands. The occurrence of lammas shoots and the intra-annual development of the height increment is genetically determined. Growth intensity (mm per day) for progenies from open-pollinated families of plus-trees with larger height increment culminated later in the season, had higher growth intensity at the active growth phase and remained high for a longer period.

Erik Erikson's hypothesis of the psychosocial formative phases of people, uncover the delicacy of youngsters with exceptional thoughtfulness regarding their natural and psychosocial portrayal. The juvenile age is where the youngster is brave, inquisitive and anxious to investigate, as he gets intrigued with the media and starts to evaluate practices and ways of life of his sentiment chiefs. The Nigerian youngster is pretty much enchanted about unfamiliar films, shows and melodic recordings portrayed by viciousness, thuggery, gangsterism, drug misuse, profanity, and even wantonness which are here and there a lot of data for him to deal with given his creating, youthful and delicate brain science which makes it simple for these substance to impact his conduct in each phase of his character advancement as he is presented to them.

Facial age estimation is of interest due to its potential to be applied in many real-life situations. However, recent age estimation efforts do not consider juveniles. Consequently, we introduce a juvenile age detection scheme called LaGMO, which focuses on the juvenile aging cues of facial shape and appearance. LaGMO is a combination of facial landmark points and Term Frequency Inverse Gravity Moment (TF-IGM). Inspired by the formation of words from morphemes, we obtained facial appearance features comprising facial shape and wrinkle texture and represented them as terms that described the age of the face. By leveraging the implicit ordinal relationship between the frequencies of the terms in the face, TF-IGM was used to compute the weights of the terms. From these weights, we built a matrix that corresponds to the possibilities of the face belonging to the age. Next, we reduced the reference matrix according to the juvenile age range (0–17 years) and avoided the exhaustive search through the entire training set. LaGMO detects the age by the projection of an unlabeled face image onto the reference matrix; the value of the projection depicts the higher probability of the image belonging to the age. With Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 89% on the Face and Gesture Recognition Research Network (FG-NET) dataset, our proposal demonstrated superior performance in juvenile age estimation.
