The accumulated numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths per capita are important characteristics of the pandemic dynamics that may also indicate the effectiveness of quarantine, testing, vaccination, and treatment. The statistical analysis based on the number of cases per capita accumulated to the end of June 2021 showed no correlations with the volume of population, its density, and the urbanization level both in European countries and regions of Ukraine. The same result was obtained with the use of fresher datasets (as of December 23, 2021). The number of deaths per capita and per case may depend on the urbanization level. For European countries these relative characteristics decrease with the increase of the urbanization level. Opposite trend was revealed for the number of deaths per capita in Ukrainian regions.

In the current workflow and heat exchange of a Casson nanoliquid across a penetrable media above a moving plate with variable thermal conductivity, adaptive thickness and chemical reaction are analyzed. First, the governing nonlinear equations of partial derivative terms with proper extreme conditions are changed into equations of ordinary derivative terms with suitable similarity conversions. Then the resulting equations are worked out using the Keller box method. The effects of various appropriate parameters are analyzed by constructing the visual representations of velocity, thermal, and fluid concentration. The velocity profile increased for shape parameter, and the opposite trend is observed for magnetic, Casson, porosity parameters. Temperature profile increases for magnetic, Casson, Brownian motion parameter, and thermophoresis parameters. Concentration profiles show a decreasing trend for wall thickness, Brownian movement, chemical reaction parameters. Also, skin friction values and calculated and matched with previous literature found in accordance. Also, local parameters Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are calculated and analyzed in detail.

Despite the increasing application of biodegradable plastic mulches (BDMs) in agriculture, the colonization and succession of the attached microbial community on BDMs during their degradation processes remain poorly characterized. Here, we buried four types of commonly used BDMs, including pure polylactic acid (PLA), pure polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), and two mixtures of PLA and PBAT (85:15 and 15:85 w/w), and one classic polyethylene (PE) mulch in soil for 5 months. Both plastic components and incubation time significantly shaped the β-diversities of microbiota on the plastic mulches (p < 0.001). Meanwhile, the microbial compositions and community structures on BDMs were significantly different from PE mulch, and when excluding PE mulch, the microbiota varied more with time than by the composition of the four BDMs. The orders Burkholderiales and Pseudonocardiales were dominant on most BDMs across different time points. The genus Ramlibacter was revealed as a common biomarker for both PLA and PBAT by random-forest model, and all biomarkers for the BDMs belonged to the dominant order Burkholderiales. In addition, degradation-related and pathogen-related functional taxa were enriched in all mulches among all 40 functional groups, while surprisingly, potential pathogens were detected at higher levels on BDMs than PE. For community assembly on all mulches, the drift and dispersal processes played more important roles than selection, and in particular, the contribution of stochastic drift increased during the degradation process of BDMs while selection decreased, while the opposite trend was observed with PE mulch. Overall, our results demonstrated some degradation species and pathogens were specifically enriched on BDMs, though stochastic processes also had important impacts on the community assembly. It suggested that, similar to conventional plastic mulch, the increased usage of BDMs could lead to potential hazards to crops and human health.

Abstract Diacylglycerol (DAG) is likely converted to triacylglycerol (TAG) by the enzyme diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT), and this conversion is important in freezing tolerance of Arabidopsis. The phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) plays important roles in the chilling and freezing tolerance of plants. In our study, we analysed the chilling phenotype, proline and sugar accumulation, phytohormone measurement, and lipid profiling of dgat1 mutants during chilling or freezing stress. We found that dgat1-1 mutants exhibited higher sensitivity to long exposure to cold stress and showed lower proline and sugar accumulation under cold acclimation conditions. The freezing-sensitive phenotype of dgat1 mutants can be ameliorated by mutations of key salicylic acid (SA) signalling components SAG101, EDS1, and PAD4 through phenotyping analysis of double mutants. Dgat1 mutants accumulated more SA, ABA, JA-Ile (jasmonate isoleucine) and OPDA (12- oxyphytodienoic acid) during freezing stress and after recovery. In addition, the DAG/TAG content in the SA-deficient mutant sid2 was lower than that in the wild type, while the SA-excessive accumulated mutant siz1 showed the opposite trend. In summary, SA could mediate the freezing tolerance of Arabidopsis by regulating the ratio of DAG and TAG, which influences the integrity of the membrane.

Background: The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze the available scientific evidence of the impact of seasonality on physical activity (PA). PA refers to walking, biking, sports and/or active recreation. Methods: The search was performed in the following databases: PubMed, PEDro, Cochrane and Embase. All publications from January 2015 to September 2020 assessing seasonal variations on physical activity development in adults were selected. Results: A total of 1159 articles were identified, of which 26 fulfilled the selection criteria involving 9300 participants from 18 different countries. The results obtained suggest that seasonality affects PA independently of the countries, pathologies of the participants and the tool to collect PA information. Conclusions: PA level varies across the seasons, with higher PA level in summer compared with other seasons, especially in winter. Sedentary behavior follows the opposite trend. Impact of seasonality variations should be considered in clinical research involving PA as a primary outcome as well as in interventions on PA promotion.

To study the influence of profile shape on the stability of nonhomogeneous slopes, strip mechanical models of slopes with different profile shapes were established following the simplified Bishop method. Three hundred and seventy slope models with different profile shapes and strata sequences were simulated and analyzed with FLAC3D. The results show that slopes with weaker-to-stronger (WtS) strata sequences are, in most cases, more stable than slopes with stronger-to-weaker (StW) strata sequences when all other conditions are the same. Slopes with linear shapes are the most stable. With increasing arch height, the stability of convex slopes decreases, and the stability of concave slopes first increases slightly and then decreases. When the strata sequences are WtS, the factors of safety (FoSs) of slopes with convex and exterior polyline shapes decrease more slowly. However, when the strata sequences are StW, the FoSs of slopes with concave and interior polyline shapes decrease more slowly. The greatest X-displacements are concentrated in the steeper areas of the slopes. For different strata sequences, the higher the rock strength at the steeper position is, the more stable the slope is, and the opposite trend is also observed. For the same strata sequence, the stability of a polyline-shaped slope is always better than that of a curved slope with the same inflection point.

Purpose: Improving satisfaction with communication (SC) is one of the issues in treatments of adults who stutter (AWS). SC can be influenced by self-rated stuttering severity (SS), negative/positive emotions, and emotion regulations and they are variable in daily communications. The present study aimed to explore factors predicting SC in daily communications of AWS, considering their variabilities and speaking contexts.Method: Twenty-seven AWS were surveyed by trait questionnaires and then by experience sampling method (ESM) seven times per day for 2 weeks, reporting speaking contexts and subjective experiences, including SC, SS, negative/positive emotions, and emotion regulations. Intra- and inter- individual variabilities and relationships of the variables were investigated.Results: Speaking contexts were summarized by unofficial/official communications. SC, SS, and emotion regulations in unofficial communications were less variable and SC was more strongly related to trait questionnaires. Items of the ESM loaded on three latent factors in each communication type, including (1) negative emotion, (2) stuttering and associated reactions (including SS and stuttering-and anxiety-related behaviors and cognitions), and (3) positive emotion and attending to communication. SC was more strongly associated with (3) than (2) in unofficial communications while the opposite trend was found in official communications.Conclusions: SC, SS, and stuttering-and anxiety-related emotion regulations in unofficial communications are more trait-like. Not only negative emotion regulations but also positive emotion regulations should be treated to improve SC in AWS, considering speaking contexts.

In this study, by comparing the four groups of sausages, namely, CO (without starter culture), LB (with Lactobacillus sakei), LS (with L. sakei 3X-2B + Staphylococcus xylosus SZ-8), and LSS (with L. sakei 3X-2B + S. xylosus SZ-8 + S. carnosus SZ-2), the effects of mixed starter cultures on physical–chemical quality, proteolysis, and biogenic amines (BAs) during fermentation and ripening were investigated. Inoculation of the mixed starter cultures increased the number of lactic acid bacteria and staphylococci in sausages during fermentation and ripening for 0 to 5 days. The L. sakei 3X-2B + S. xylosus SZ-8 + S. carnosus SZ-2 mixed starter accelerated the rate of acid production and water activity reduction of sausages and improved the redness value. Compared with CO, the mixed starter effectively inhibited Enterobacteriaceae. At the end of ripening, the LSS group was approximately 1.25 CFU/g, which was less than the CO group, thereby reducing the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) in the LSS group. The free amino acids in the LS and LSS groups (224.97 and 235.53 mg/kg dry sausage, respectively) were significantly (p < 0.001) higher than that in the CO group (170.93 mg/kg dry sausage). The level of histamine, cadaverine, putrescine, and common BAs showed an opposite trend to the increase of the corresponding precursor amino acid content, which were significantly lower (p < 0.001) in the LS and LSS sausages than in CO. This study showed that L. sakei 3X-2B + S. xylosus SZ-8 + S. carnosus SZ-2 is a potential mixed starter for fermented meat products.

The present investigation was carried out to explore the biochemical changes and antioxidant variations, including non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant variations, in the leaves of different varieties of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) belonging to the early, mid-, and late-flowering categories in the United Arab Emirates. The changes in the protein and phenol concentration; the ascorbic acid, reduced glutathione, and α-tocopherol contents; and the activity of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase were studied in the leaves during the preflowering, flowering, and postflowering stages of the date palms. Two varieties each from the early (Shaham, Khanezi), mid- (Barhee, Nabthasaif), and late- (Khasab, Fardh) flowering types were used in this study. The protein content in the leaves was higher in the early flowering varieties during the preflowering stage but lower in the other two varieties. The phenol content showed an opposite trend to the protein. There was significant variation in the ascorbic acid content and a reduction in glutathione and α-tocopherol between the leaves of different varieties. Similarly, the activity of the antioxidant enzyme ascorbate peroxidase in the leaves was higher during the preflowering stage in all varieties. The superoxide dismutase (SOD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and catalase (CAT) activity was highest in the Bharhee leaves for all the stages. The peroxidase activity (POD) was highest in the Fardh variety of date palm, whereas the Khanezi variety exhibited the lowest activity. This study can be used as a baseline for developing more protocols for understanding the possible roles of biochemicals, antioxidants, antioxidant enzymes, and their interactions in the regulation of flower development in different date palm varieties.

Aroma is an essential quality indicator of oolong tea, a tea derived from the Camellia sinensis L. plant. Carboxylic 6 (C6) acids and their derivative esters are important components of fatty acid (FA)-derived volatiles in oolong tea. However, the formation and regulation mechanism of C6 acid during postharvest processing of oolong tea remains unclear. To gain better insight into the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of C6 compounds in oolong tea, a combined analysis of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity, CsADH2 key gene expression, and the FA-derived metabolome during postharvest processing of oolong tea was performed for the first time, complemented by CsHIP (hypoxia-induced protein conserved region) gene expression analysis. Volatile fatty acid derivative (VFAD)-targeted metabolomics analysis using headspace solid-phase microextraction–gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HS-SPEM-GC-TOF-MS) showed that the (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol content increased after each turnover, while the hexanoic acid content showed the opposite trend. The results further showed that both the ADH activity and CsADH gene expression level in oxygen-deficit-turnover tea leaves (ODT) were higher than those of oxygen-turnover tea leaves (OT). The C6-alcohol-derived ester content of OT was significantly higher than that of ODT, while C6-acid-derived ester content showed the opposite trend. Furthermore, the HIP gene family was screened and analyzed, showing that ODT treatment significantly promoted the upregulation of CsHIG4 and CsHIG6 gene expression. These results showed that the formation mechanism of oolong tea aroma quality is mediated by airflow in the lipoxygenase–hydroperoxide lyase (LOX-HPL) pathway, which provided a theoretical reference for future quality control in the postharvest processing of oolong tea.
