AbstractBackground: Cerebral Palsy is a heterogeneous group of disorders of neuromotor function disorders in early birth, non-progressive, affecting the fetal or developing brain and characterized by changes in muscle tone (especially spasticity or stiffness), muscle weakness, involuntary movements, ataxia, or a combination. the abnormality. Objective: The literature review study aims to determine the description of aquatic exercise to improve gross motor skills in CP children. Methods: The selection of articles in this study used the PICO mnemonic design. 35 reviewed articles via Z-library articles, PubMed. Inclusion and exclusion criteria according to keywords, published in 2010-2021. Results: The results of the analysis of the literature review of 5 articles showed that aquatic exercise can improve gross motor skills with an average value before the intervention of 50,1 and before the intervention of 52,7. Conclusion: aquatic exercise can improve children's motor skills in cerebral palsy. Penelitian literatur review bertujuan untuk mengetahui Gambaran meningkatkan motorik kasar setelah dilakukan latihan akuatik pada anak CP. Pemilihan artikel pada penelitian ini menggunakan desain mnemonic PICO. Artikel yang di review melalui Z-library artikel berjumlah 2, PubMed berjumlah 3. Kreteria insklusi dan ekslusi sesuai dengan kata kunci, dipublikasi rentang waktu 2010-2021. Hasil analisis literature review 5 artikel menunjukan bahwa latihan akuatik dapat meningatkan motorik kasar dengan rata-rata usia 4-12 tahun, dan GMFCS yang didaptkan leve II lebih unggul sebesar 31 anak, untuk nilai rata-rata sebelum intervensi 50,1 dan sesudah intervensi 52,7. latihan akuatik dapat meningkatkan motorik anak pada Cerebral palsy. Sebagai dasar tindakan dalam melakukan management fisioterapi pada masalah motorik kasar pada anak cerebral palsy, fisioterapi dapat melakukan penanganan dengan menggunakan modalitas latihan akuatikKata kunci: Cerebral Palsy, Akuatik, Motorik kasar

Ischemic stroke poses a serious threat to human health. Its high morbidity, disability, and lethality rates have led to it being a research hotspot. Cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury is a difficult point in the treatment of ischemic stroke. In recent years, studies have shown that repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can enhance cerebral ischemic tolerance and have a significant protective effect on reperfusion injury after ischemia, but its specific mechanism is unknown. The Nrf2/pathway plays a vital role in ischemia-reperfusion injury in the body environment. Therefore, in this experiment, the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) reperfusion model of SD rats was made to simulate the occurrence of experimental cerebral infarction by the suture method. After treatment with rTMS, it was studied whether it can regulate the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1, affect the content of MDA and SOD activity, and then activate the Nrf2 pathway to exert its brain protection. The results showed that after MCAO reperfusion, the neurological deficit score of rats increased, and the time to remove the bilateral stickers and the time to cross the balance beam increased, suggesting the successful establishment of the experimental cerebral infarction model. Detecting the brain tissue of experimental cerebral infarction rats found that the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 decreased, the content of MDA increased, and the activity of SOD decreased. After rTMS treatment, the neuromotor function of experimental cerebral infarction rats improved, the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 in the brain tissue gradually increased, the content of MDA decreased, and the activity of SOD increased. It indicates that the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 in experimental cerebral infarction rats is reduced. After treatment with rTMS, it can improve the neuromotor function damage of the rats and reduce the level of oxidative stress. The mechanism may be through promoting the activation of the Nrf2 signaling pathway, acting on the expression of antioxidant proteins, such as HO-1 and SOD1, reducing oxidative stress damage, and playing a protective effect on brain tissue.

Exposure to lead and mercury can cause deficits in neuromotor function. Selenium and manganese are essential elements, hence both deficiency and excess could result in decreased neuromotor function. We aimed to examine hand grip strength, a marker of neuromotor function, and blood concentrations of lead, mercury, selenium, and manganese in the general U.S. population. We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2011–2014) on 6199 participants ages 20–79 years. We assessed associations of blood concentration for these elements and grip strength with generalized regression models, and cubic splines to detect possible nonlinear relations, adjusting for confounders. The results showed that mercury and manganese were not associated with grip strength. Lead was associated with weaker grip strength in women (for 10-fold increase in lead, −2.4 kg; 95% CI: −4.2, −0.5), but not in men. Higher selenium was associated with stronger grip strength in women (8.5 kg; 95% CI: 1.9, 15.1) and men (4.6; 95% CI: −11.9, 21.0), although the association was not significant in the latter. In conclusion, lead exposure was associated with weaker grip strength in women, even at the low exposure levels in the population. Furthermore, low blood selenium level was associated with weaker grip strength, suggesting that some individuals might have selenium deficiency manifesting with poorer neuromotor function.

This chapter explores velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD), its impact, aetiology, assessment, and management. VPD may cause hypernasal, weak, and unintelligible speech, facial grimacing, nasal turbulence and nasal regurgitation, middle ear problems, and sinusitis. Such manifestations may be distressing for the patient, be associated with poor academic outcomes, be negatively perceived by others, lead to bullying and withdrawal, and result in relationship and employment difficulties. Like the effect of a visible difference on psychosocial confidence and self-esteem, the manifestations of VPD on emotional well-being and social interaction do not necessarily correlate with the amount of speech, language, or communication dysfunction. Normal anatomy, neuromotor function, and speech learning are prerequisites for effective velopharyngeal function. A problem with any of these components may result in a velopharyngeal mechanism that fails to efficiently and fully close throughout oral speech sound formation leading to VPD and an ensuing speech disorder. Perceptual speech evaluation is used to diagnose VPD. Lateral videofluoroscopy and nasoendoscopy are commonly deployed to assess velopharyngeal function and determine management strategies. Surgical interventions include pharyngoplasty, pharyngeal flaps, and velopharyngeal augmentation. Non-surgical interventions include speech prostheses and nasal obturators for speech improvement.

A recent Consensus Conference proposed subtyping concussive injuries into 5 categories. We propose adding a neuromotor subtype. Abnormal motion is a key feature of brain injury, as concussions can impact the neurological systems controlling gait. Neuromotor function can remain abnormal after symptom resolution and may be superior to self-report for tracking recovery. Neuromotor function can also define co-occurring orthopedic injuries and reveal vulnerabilities which could reduce injury risk

All mammalian infants suckle, a fundamentally different process than drinking in adults. Infant mammal oropharyngeal anatomy is also anteroposteriorly compressed and becomes more elongate postnatally. While suckling and drinking require different patterns of muscle use and kinematics, little insight exists into how the neuromotor and anatomical systems change through the time that infants suckle. We measured the orientation, activity and contractile patterns of five muscles active during infant feeding from early infancy until weaning using a pig model. Muscles not aligned with the long axis of the body became less mediolaterally orientated with age. However, the timing of activation and the contractile patterns of those muscles exhibited little change, although variation was larger in younger infants than older infants. At both ages, there were differences in contractile patterns within muscles active during both sucking and swallowing, as well as variation among muscles during swallowing. The changes in anatomy, coupled with less variation closer to weaning and little change in muscle firing and shortening patterns suggest that the neuromotor system may be optimized to transition to solid foods. The lesser consequences of aspiration during feeding on an all-liquid diet may not necessitate the evolution of variation in neuromotor function through infancy.

Objective: To develop and validate a tool for evaluating balance and neuromotor function in patients with fibromyalgia (FMS). Methods: Brainstorming, the nominal group technique, and pilot-testing were used to select a battery of 20 functional balance tests that were included in a screening tool. A total of 108 subjects (62 with fibromyalgia syndrome, 22 aged over 65 years, and 24 healthy subjects) participated in this validation study. Factor validity, internal consistency, the ability to discriminate between patients and healthy subjects, and concurrent validity with the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI), the 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-12), and other tools for measuring balance, such as the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), the Activities-Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC-16), the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I), and posturographic parameters, were evaluated. Results: The factorial analysis extracted four factors that explained 70% of the variance. The Alpha Cronbach value was 0.928. Concurrent validity of the screening tool with respect to other tools was high, and the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed an AUC value of 0.932 for discriminating between healthy and FMS subjects. Severe balance disorder related to head movements in FMS patients was found. Conclusion: The 20-item JAEN (Joint Assessment of Equilibrium and Neuro-motor Function) screening tool is a valid and reliable tool for assessing balance in patients with FMS.
