The disasters that’ve occurred recently in urban areas in Cameroon, highlight the permanent dangers weighing on the inhabitants. There is an increase in extremes climate parameters: high temperatures, rainfall disturbances and the recurrence of gales. Some of these effects are amplified by both the constraining relief of several cities and human influence on the environment. In fact, on the one hand, the sites of several Cameroonian cities either have rugged reliefs that promote land erosion, or flat configurations that limit the gravity discharge of runoff water. On the other hand, the rapid urban growth and the proliferation of slums which cover nearly 65 to 70% of the urban area, wear out more quickly the works and urban sanitation infrastructures when they exist due to the accelerated and continuous waterproofing soil in addition to the poor waste management. The urgency to find lasting solutions to this phenomenon is now unequivocal. It requires an inclusive normative framework that is more effective than that currently in force, which brings the country towards resilience.

This paper reports the findings of a two-year project on the relationship between a university community and its sanitation issues, the potential benefits of decentralized urban sanitation, and methods for transforming university culture regarding these topics. Using a public university in Mexico City as a case study, the research included three phases: diagnosis, training, and promotion; design and building a dry toilet prototype; and evaluation. The phases were facilitated through interdisciplinary participatory methodologies. Our approach achieved a significant socio-technical transformation. We also discovered great interest in alternative sanitation systems within Mexico City. This research may help inform interdisciplinary and participatory interventions involving these systems.

Abstract The Special Region of Yogyakarta Government took one step to improve access to proper sanitation for the community through the Communal WWTP. There are four communal WWTP procurement programs in Sleman District: Community-based Sanitation, Urban Sanitation Rural Infrastructure (USRI), Special Allocation Fund and Community-based Environmental Sanitation. After the Communal WWTP was built and operated, various problems indicate the Communal WWTP has not run optimally after construction. Therefore, this study evaluated thirteen Communal WWTPs in Sleman District after construction was carried out. The aspects reviewed in this study were the administrator institutional and the management’s performance using the scoring method. The evaluation results based on the administrator institutional aspect and the management’s performance showed that Ambarketawang WWTP had less performance with a total score of 16. At the same time, other WWTPs got the optimal category with a total score more than equal to 25. These results indicate that the Community-Based Environmental Sanitation procurement program was considered less than optimal because the Ambarketawang WWTP did not keep Communal WWTP documentation and had no maintenance Standard Operational Procedure (SOP). The administrators did not also understand the main tasks and functions as administrators.

Urban sanitation is a major challenge during the rapid urbanization being experienced by developing countries, as a low sewerage infrastructure capacity and irregular onsite wastewater treatment raise the risk of surface water contamination. The application of specific sewage markers to characterize contaminant sources is therefore essential for managing urban sanitation issues. In this study, we investigated the concentrations of eight sewage markers (acetaminophen, caffeine, carbamazepine, cotinine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfapyridine, atenolol, and acesulfame) in various water sources within urban area of the Galle City, Sri Lanka. The total concentration of the eight markers was in the order of hospital discharge > sewage treatment plant (STP) influent > surface drainage system. Among the eight selected markers, acetaminophen was dominant in hospital discharge (70.2–123.6 µg/L) while caffeine was the largest contributor to STP influent (16.2–68.7 µg/L) and surface drainage (0.95–21.73 µg/L). We then proposed and tested a set of criteria for evaluating the applicability of markers, including removal efficiency, concentration magnitude, excretion rate, and wastewater burden. The labile markers caffeine and acetaminophen were suitable for characterizing domestic gray and black wastewater, respectively. These results imply that the city’s drainage system receives both domestic graywater and human excretion, likely due to insufficient on-site sanitation systems. The conservative marker carbamazepine was useful for tracking hospital residues over long distances; these results imply that hospital wastewater treatment was not working properly, accounting for pharmaceutical residues reaching surface water via a hidden discharges connected to the drainage system.

Purpose of the study: The paper attempts to find the answer to the question – Why do we lack in basic sanitation? What are the reasons for it? Paper introspects the challenges encountered in sanitation services for Ajmer district in Rajasthan. It identifies the key bottlenecks of the sanitation system to the ground realities of implementation for a non-metropolitan city. The article also outlines the way forward which is suggested to make the sanitation system in the city more available to all. Methodology: The paper is drawn on policy document analysis, urban sanitation policy and other Indian government promotional materials on urban sanitation, Indian municipalities, and a number of public-private partnerships. The paper reviews the extant literature on urban sanitation and thereafter examines challenges met in Ajmer district of Rajasthan. Main findings: It emphasizes the major challenges of access to sanitation, lack of private sector engagement, lack of regulation and standardization, treatment of wastewater and septage, low infrastructure, weak institutional framework etc. The Paper also proposes suggestions for meeting these challenges so that a proper system of sanitation may emerge. Applications of this study: This study will be useful for all those agencies who are involved with sanitation system governance. The paper contributes to the literature by addressing a neglected theme of investigating the challenges and their probable solution strategies about Ajmer district of Rajasthan. The study will provide background of various challenges faced in various cities in Indian perspectives and how they can be dealt by proposed suggestions. This study will be beneficial in the area of sanitation systems, urban governance, etc. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study is significant in highlighting the type of challenges and what could be possible solutions in Indian perspectives with special reference to Ajmer.

Strong WASH systems are needed to extend and ensure adequate urban sanitation services in growing cities like Lusaka. Failure to increase the provision of sanitation services is primarily a governance problem, but general governance initiatives will not be effective without practical measures to strengthen regulation and specifically address corruption. Zambia has developed an impressive regulatory framework including plans to cover non-sewered sanitation, however, this regulatory framework requires further strengthening especially in terms of the capacity of regulators.

Taking the office of the coninc der ribauden in Ghent as a case-study, this article reconstructs the enforcement of urban sanitation and preventative health practices during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The coninc managed a wide range of issues perceived as potentially polluting, damaging or threateningto health. Banning waste and chasing pigs as well as prostitutes off the streets, the office implemented a governmental vision on communal well-being. Health interests, as part of a broader pursuit of the common good, therefore played an important yet hitherto largely overlooked role in medieval urban governance.
