Optical properties of PMMA/boehmite nano-hybrid synthesized directly from their relevant precursors via facile aqueous one-pot process is studied. Silane coupling agent was applied to make compatible chemically the organic–inorganic counterparts. The chemical bond of SiOAl as the main link between organic and inorganic moieties was confirmed by Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectra. The chemical bond of Si–O–Al as the main link between organic and inorganic moieties. Determining the refractive and absorption index, real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant, energy loss function, and their distribution for PMMA/boehmite nano-hybrid as a function of boehmite loading was assessed in the range of 12–120 THz using FTIR data and Kramers–Kronig relations. The inorganic/organic weight ratio varied from 0.7% to 5% and its impact on optical features was evaluated. It was demonstrated that the optical features of hybrids are frequency-dependent and less affected from boehmite incorporation.

The objectives of this research aimed to study effects of cultivation technology and appropriate dosages of NPK on Characteristics of Soil Chemistry and rice product. The experiment was arranged in a factorial split plot design with three replicates. Factor of cultivation technology consisted of four levels, i.e. legowo system cultivating, conventional system cultivating, salibu technology, and ratooning technology. Factor of appropriate dosages of NPK consisted of three levels i.e. 100 kgs ha-1 NPK Phonska, 200 kgs ha-1 NPK Phonska, 300 kgs ha-1 NPK Phonska. The result showed that cultivation technology exerted higgly significant effect on N-total, pH (H2O), KTK, C–organic, weight of 1000 grains, numbers of productive tillers, yields, and exert a significant effect on Kdd. Appropriate dosages of NPK exerted highly significant effects on yields and exerted a significant effect on N-total and numbers of productive tillers. Interaction between cultivation technology and appropriate dosages of NPKshowed highly significant on N-total, numbers of production tillers and yields. The highest yields of rice showed by cultivation technologylegowo system with appropriate dosages of 300 kgs ha-1 NPK Phonska, however based on financial analysis cultivation technology of salibu turned out the best of other cultivation technology since it required minimum cost.

In this study, we use empirical relationships to model accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in submerged rooted macrophytes sampled in the upper St. Lawrence River (Canada - United States). The correlations between PCB congener concentrations in sediments, in macrophyte shoots, and in their roots were all significant (P < 0.001). However, the PCB congener concentrations in macrophyte shoots were better predicted by concentrations in sediments (top 5 cm) than by those in the roots of plants (R2= 0.839 and 0.704, respectively). Our results suggest that models based on the phase partitioning concept are applicable to submerged macrophytes. The lipids in shoots and the organic fraction in sediments are likely the phases involved in PCB partitioning between these two compartments. Between shoots and roots, the lipid phase also appears to be involved in the congener partitioning. However, between roots and sediments (5- to 10-cm depth interval), the correlation was weaker using organic weight standardisation of congener concentrations in sediments than using dry weight standardisation (R2= 0.852 and 0.778, respectively).

AbstractPollicipes pollicipes is widely used as food and is the subject of intensive fisheries in Portugal. Since November 1990 growth of this species was studied on the SW coast of Portugal. Two kinds of methods were used: (1) individual growth: the adjacent substrata were marked with polyester resin and the organisms were mapped and measured (Rostro-Carina length=RC) every month; 2) spatial variability of allometric growth: various biometrical measures were used for animals from different habitats; the relationship between these values and the organic weight were established. The results of these analyses suggest that there are spatial (due to tide and light related factors) and temporal differences (growth rates arc higher in spring and summer) in the growth of this pedunculate barnacle. In this study RC was the biometrical variable that best represented the linear growth of this species and we recommend its use for fishery control purposes.

The in situ productivity of both the phytoplankton and the macrophytes in Marion Lake, B.C., was determined from April 1966 through September 1966, by using 14C techniques. The uptake of NaH14CO3 was measured in selected macrophytes by enclosing them in Plexiglas chambers. These plants were then combusted in oxygen, and the 14CO2 was absorbed in toluene-POPOP-ethanolamine. Radioassay was accomplished by liquid scintillation. In addition to the 14C method, an organic weight method was used to measure macrophytic productivity. The productivity of the macrophytes was always higher than that of the phytoplankton. There was a considerable difference in the estimates of the macrophyte productivity arrived at by the two different methods, and reasons for this are discussed. The total productivity of the lake is very low when compared with lakes of similar latitudes because of low phytoplankton productivity. It is concluded that in Marion Lake the macrophytes are more important primary producers than the phytoplankton. The difficulty of comparing data between this and other studies is discussed, and the need for standardization of methods is emphasized.
