The literature review presents the results of studies carried out in the world over the past years, devoted to the study of factors and markers of oxidative stress in the development of therapeutic diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases. The article describes the results of studies using enzyme immunoassay of such biomarkers of oxidative stress as glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, oxidatively modified low density lipoproteins, carbonylated proteins, as well as the general antioxidant capacity of the blood.

This study investigated the ecotoxicological effects of differently sized (4–6 µm and 20–25 µm) low-density polyethylene (LDPE) microplastics (MPs), with and without adsorbed benzo-a-pyrene (BaP), in clam Scrobicularia plana. Biomarkers of oxidative stress (superoxide dismutase—SOD; catalase—CAT), biotransformation (glutathione-S-transferases—GST), oxidative damage (lipid peroxidation—LPO) and neurotoxicity (acetylcholinesterase—AChE) were analysed in gills and digestive glands at different time intervals for a total of 14 days of exposure. In order to have a better impact perspective of these contaminants, an integrated biomarker response index (IBR) and Health Index were applied. Biomarker alterations are apparently more related to smaller sized (4–6 µm) MPs in gills and to virgin LDPE MPs in the digestive gland according to IBR results, while the digestive gland was more affected by these MPs according to the health index.

During cultivation, wheat is exposed to several abiotic and/or biotic stress conditions that may adversely impact the wheat yield and quality. The impact of abiotic stress caused by nitrogen deficiency and biotic stress caused by phytopathogenic fungus Fusarium culmorum on biomarkers of oxidative stress in the flag leaf of nine winter wheat varieties (Ficko, U-1, Galloper, BC Mandica, BC Opsesija, Ingenio, Isengrain, Felix, and Bezostaya-1) was analyzed in this study. Hydrogen peroxide concentration and lipid peroxidation level were measured as indicators of oxidative stress, while the antioxidant response was determined by measuring the concentration of phenolic compounds and activities of antioxidant enzymes. Wheat variety and nitrogen treatment had a significant effect on all examined biomarkers of oxidative stress in the flag leaf, while the impact of Fusarium treatment was less pronounced. The most significant impact on the measured stress biomarkers had a low nitrogen level, which mainly increased hydrogen peroxide concentration and lipid peroxidation level and decreased activities of antioxidant enzymes in most varieties. The obtained results were discussed and compared with the previous study in which biochemical analyzes were performed on the wheat spike. There was no significant strong correlation between flag leaf and spike response in the measured parameters, which, in addition to the variety-specific response, also indicates a tissue-specific antioxidant response.

Blood biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation have been associated with increased risk of hypertension development; yet their application in sub-Saharan Africa has been limited due to the lack of blood collection facilities. In this study, we evaluated the usefulness of dried blood spots (DBS), a more feasible alternative to venous blood, in rural sub-Saharan residents. We recruited 342 women with incident hypertension from rural Senegal, and measured C-reactive protein (CRP) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in DBS and concurrent blood pressure (BP) at baseline and 1-year follow-up. Associations of DBS biomarkers with current levels of and 1-year changes in BP were examined after adjusting for demographic, medical, and socioeconomic covariates. DBS concentrations of MDA were significantly associated with concurrent systolic BP (SBP) (p < 0.05), while DBS baseline concentrations of CRP were associated with longitudinal changes in SBP between baseline and follow-up. Compared to participants with baseline CRP < 1 mg/L, those with CRP of 1–3 mg/L and 3–10 mg/L had 2.11 mmHg (95%CI: −2.79 to 7.02 mmHg) and 4.68 mmHg (95%CI: 0.01 to 9.36 mmHg) increases in SBP at follow-up, respectively. The results support the use of DBS biomarkers for hypertension prevention and control, especially in settings with limited clinical resources.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and multifactorial neurodegenerative disease accounting for 80% of dementia worldwide.Objective: To assess the influence of probiotics on cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD.Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant studies.Results: Six randomized controlled trials involving 462 patients with MCI and AD were included in this meta-analysis. The probiotic administration had favorable effects on homeostasis model assessment–insulin resistance [HOMA-IR; Weighted mean difference (WMD) = −0.34, 95% confidence intervals (95% CI): −0.44 to 0.24, P &lt; 0.001, I2 = 0%], very low–density lipoprotein levels (VLDL; WMD = −3.71, 95% CI: −6.11 to −1.32, P=0.002, I2 = 57.7%), quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI; WMD = 0.01, 95% CI: 0.00–0.01, P = 0.003, I2 = 51%), and triglyceride levels (WMD = −15.65, 95% CI: −27.48 to −3.83, P = 0.009, I2 = 63.4%) in patients with AD. However, after Hartung-Knapp adjustment, all effects were non-significant except for HOMA-IR (MD = −0.34, 95%CI = −0.58 to −0.11). The changes in the Mini-Mental State Examination, repeatable battery for the assessment of neuropsychological status, and other biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and lipid profiles (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, malondialdehyde, and total cholesterol) were negligible.Conclusion: The findings suggested that the consumption of probiotics had favorable effects on the HOMA-IR in patients with AD. However, the probiotic treatment did not affect cognitive function, other biomarkers of oxidative stress, and other lipid profiles.
