B chromosomes (Bs) are highly polymorphic additional chromosomes in the genomes of many species. Due to the dispensability of Bs and the lack of noticeable phenotypic effects in their carriers, they were considered genetically inert for a long time. Recent studies on Bs in Apodemus flavicollis revealed their genetic composition, potential origin, and spatial organization in the interphase nucleus. Surprisingly, the genetic content of Bs in this species is preserved in all studied samples, even in geographically distinct populations, indicating its biological importance. Using RT-PCR we studied the transcription activity of three genes (Rraga, Haus6, and Cenpe) previously identified on Bs in A. flavicollis. We analysed mRNA isolated from spleen tissues of 34 animals harboring different numbers of Bs (0–3). The products of transcriptional activity of the analysed sequences differ in individuals with and without Bs. We recorded B-genes and/or genes from the standard genome in the presence of Bs, showing sex-dependent higher levels of transcriptional activity. Furthermore, the transcriptional activity of Cenpe varied with the age of the animals differently in the group with and without Bs. With aging, the amount of product was only found to significantly decrease in B carriers. The potential biological significance of all these differences is discussed in the paper.

Squalene is mostly associated with the biosynthesis of polycyclic triterpenes. Although there have been suggestions that squalene could be involved in the biosynthesis of carotenoids, functionally and evolutionarily related to polycyclic triterpenes, evidence of this 'squalene route' in nature was lacking. We demonstrate that planctomycetes synthesize C30 carotenoids via squalene and that this 'squalene route' is widely distributed in Bacteria. We also investigated the functional roles of hopanoids and carotenoids in Planctomycetes and show that their protective functions under stress conditions are complementary. Our evolutionary analyses suggest that the C30 carotenoid biosynthetic pathway is the most ancestral, with a potential origin in Firmicutes or Planctomycetes . In addition, we propose an evolutionary scenario to explain the diversification of the different carotenoid and squalene pathways. Together, these results improve the evolutionary contextualization of these molecules. Likewise, the widespread occurrence of the squalene route in bacteria increases the functional repertoire of squalene.

The article analyzes the literature data on the immune system and endometriosis. The features of the immune system, as well as the mechanisms of endometriosis development in the case of immune system dysfunction, are considered. Aim. To study the role of the immune system in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Material and methods. To analyze the literature, we searched for information about this problem up to 10 years deep in PubMed/MEDLINE, PMC, and Web of Sсiеnce. The following terms were used individually or in combination: "genital endometriosis", "immune system", "cytokines", "autoantibodies". The search criteria were key studies related to genital endometriosis and the immune system: meta-analyses, original studies, retrospective and cohort studies. Results and discussion. There is a need to improve understanding of the potential origin of the General immunopathophysiology of endometriosis in order to identify therapeutic target areas that may allow relief or, ultimately, prevention of this disease. Immunological markers in this aspect have certain prospects. Conclusion. Although the role of cytokines in the development of endometriosis has been determined, it is not well understood. In this regard, it is difficult to clearly determine how they affect the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Keywords: endometriosis, immune system, cytokines, autoantibodie.

The presence of the Eurasian beaver Castor fiber L. has been recently confirmed with two separated populations in Tuscany (Central Italy) and probably represents the result of an unofficial release. In late spring and summer 2021, seven reliable records of Eurasian beaver have been collected in Umbria and other neighbouring regions, implying that the distribution of this large rodent is even wider than previously reported. In this short work, we updated the distribution of this protected species in Central Italy, by collecting and mapping all the confirmed occurrences. Beavers were proved to be present throughout the Tiber (Tevere) river basin in both provinces of Umbria, and another individual has been road-killed in the Marche region, near the border with Tuscany. Other single signs of presence occurred in Emilia Romagna and Latium. The only hair sample we were able to collect confirmed it as the Eurasian beaver species. No reliable evidence is available on the number of free-ranging beavers in Central Italy, and systematic monitoring is needed. Before any management and conservation action, further data are required concerning distribution range, potential origin, social perception, and the effects on the ecosystems.

ABSTRACTRecent evidence supports the fimbriae of the fallopian tube as a potential origin site for high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). The progression of many solid tumors is accompanied by changes in the microenvironment, including alterations of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The ECM of fallopian tube and HGSOC has not been well characterized. Therefore, we sought to determine the ECM composition of the benign fallopian tube and how it changes with the onset of serous intraepithelial carcinomas (STICs), precursor of HGSOC. The ECM composition of benign human fallopian tube was first defined from a meta-analysis of published proteomic datasets and identified 190 ECM proteins. We then conducted de novo proteomics using ECM enrichment and identified 88 proteins, 7 of which were not identified in prior studies. We further investigated the levels and localization of seven of these ECM proteins (type I, III, and IV collagens, fibronectin, laminin, versican, perlecan) and hyaluronic acid using multi-spectral immunohistochemical staining of fimbriae from patients with benign conditions or STICs. Quantification revealed an increase in stromal fibronectin and a decrease in epithelial versican in STICs. Our results provide an in-depth picture of the ECM in the benign fallopian tube and identified ECM changes that accompany STIC formation.

The local botanical Imperata cylindrica in Cameroon was investigated for its antibacterial potency. The methanol extract afforded a total of seven compounds, including five hitherto unreported compounds comprising three flavonoids (1–3) and two C-15 isoprenoid analogues (4 and 5) together with known derivatives (6 and 7). The novelty of the flavonoids was related to the presence of both methyl and prenyl groups. The potential origin of the methyl in the flavonoids is discussed, as well as the chemophenetic significance of our findings. Isolation was performed over repeated silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and the structures were elucidated by (NMR and MS). The crude methanol extract and isolated compounds showed considerable antibacterial potency against a panel of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial strains. The best MIC values were obtained with compound (2) against S. aureus ATCC 25923 (32 µg/mL) and MRSA1 (16 µg/mL).

Patients affected by COVID-19 present a series of different symptoms; despite some of these are common, other less likely appear. Auditory symptoms seem to be less frequent, maybe because rarer or, alternatively, because they are underestimated during the clinical investigation. The hearing impairment might be related to the central or peripheral involvement of the auditory pathways; in particular, the likelihood of thrombosis might be one of the causes. To date, the prevalence of auditory symptoms such as sudden or progressive sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus is unclear in COVID-19 patients. However, their presence might be an early sign of thrombosis or spread of the infection into the brain. In this systematic review of the literature we investigated the presence of auditory symptoms in COVID-19 patients and discussed their potential origin and causal relationship with SARS-CoV-2. Results showed that, despite rarely, auditory impairment can appear in patients with COVID-19 and should always be investigated for an early treatment and potential indicator of involvement of the central nervous system.

During the last two decades, diverse epigenetic modifications including DNA methylation, histone modifications, RNA editing and miRNA dysregulation have been associated with psychiatric disorders. A few years ago, in a review we outlined the most common epigenetic alterations in major psychiatric disorders (e.g., aberrant DNA methylation of DTNBP1, HTR2A, RELN, MB-COMT and PPP3CC, and increased expression of miR-34a and miR-181b). Recent follow-up studies have uncovered other DNA methylation aberrations affecting several genes in mental disorders, in addition to dysregulation of many miRNAs. Here, we provide an update on new epigenetic findings and highlight potential origin of the diversity and inconsistencies, focusing on drug effects, tissue/cell specificity of epigenetic landscape and discuss shortcomings of the current diagnostic criteria in mental disorders.

Abstract The snowflake coral Carijoa riisei is one of the most invasive and successfully adapting species in the coastal marine environment. This species can disperse through ballast waters or fouling on the hull of ships, which allows it to expand very quickly to areas where it is not native. Recently C. riisei was identified in the Porto Grande Bay in São Vicente island in Cabo Verde Islands. We analysed mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences from specimens collected at this locality to determine the potential origin of this invasion. Lack of genetic variation in both mitochondrial and nuclear genes suggest a very recent invasion (bottleneck effect) but did not permit to establish its origin with total confidence.
