The outcomes of adhesion and ecotoxicity tests carried out on metal specimens faithfully representing the surface of real ships, including the primer and tie coat layers typically applied on ship hull prior to deposition of the antifouling paint, show the practical applicability of "AquaSun" antifouling sol-gel coatings. Newly developed AquaSun coatings share superhydrophicity (contact angle >115) and exceptionally high scratch resistance (ASTM 5B). Coupled to the ecofriendly antifouling mechanism based on continuous H2O2 formation upon exposure to solar light and foul release due to low surface energy, these results open the route to the practical utilization of these novel marine coatings.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of crystalline, porous, 3D materials synthesized by the linking of metal nodes and organic linkers are rapidly emerging as attractive materials in gas storage, electrodes in batteries, super-capacitors, sensors, water treatment, and medicine etc. However the utility of MOFs in coatings, especially in marine coatings, has not been thoroughly investigated. In this manuscript we report the first study on silver MOF (Ag-MOF) functionalized acrylic polymers for marine coatings. A simple and rapid microwave technique was used to synthesize a two-dimensional platelet structured Ag-MOF. Field tests on the MOF reinforced marine coatings exhibited an antifouling performance, which can be attributed to the inhibition of marine organisms to settle as evidenced by the anti-bacterial activity of Ag-MOFs. Our results indicate that MOF based coatings are highly promising candidates for marine coatings.

Biofouling is a major concern to the maritime industry. Biofouling increases fuel consumption, accelerates corrosion, clogs membranes and pipes, and reduces the buoyancy of marine installations, such as ships, platforms, and nets. While traditionally marine installations are protected by toxic biocidal coatings, due to recent environmental concerns and legislation, novel nanomaterial-based anti-fouling coatings are being developed. Hybrid nanocomposites of organic-inorganic materials give a possibility to combine the characteristics of both groups of material generating opportunities to prevent biofouling. The development of bio-inspired surface designs, progress in polymer science and advances in nanotechnology is significantly contributing to the development of eco-friendly marine coatings containing photocatalytic nanomaterials. The review mainly discusses photocatalysis, antifouling activity, and formulation of coatings using metal and metal oxide nanomaterials (nanoparticles, nanowires, nanorods). Additionally, applications of nanocomposite coatings for inhibition of micro- and macro-fouling in marine environments are reviewed.

Zwitterionic polymers are material families characterized by high dipole moment and highly charged groups. Zwitterionic materials simultaneously possess an equimolar number of cationic and anionic moieties, maintaining overall electroneutrality and high hydrophilicity. Zwitterionic is categorized into three groups: phosphobetaine, carboxybetaine, and sulfobetaine that could form dense and stable hydration shells through the strong ion-dipole interaction among water molecules and zwitterions. As a result of their remarkable hydration capability, low interfacial energy, and marvelous antifouling capacities, these materials have been applied as adsorbing agents, biomedical applications, electronics, hydrogels, and antifouling for membrane separation and marine coatings. This review is focused on polysulfobetaine, which contains sulfonate as a negatively charged group, and quaternary ammonium as a positively charged group. Polysulfobetaine is the most promising one to be applied in the industry since it is commercially available and its monomers are easily prepared. The comparisons of several polysulfobetaine derivatives as antimicrobial, antifouling, surfactant and detergents, biomedical and electronic application, surface modification, and smart hydrogel are presented in this review.

Near- and mid-infrared optical coherence tomography (OCT) is evaluated as a non-destructive and non-contact reflection imaging modality for inspection of industrial and marine coatings. Near-infrared OCT was used to obtain high-resolution images (~6/2 µm lateral/axial) of hidden subsurface cracks and defects in a resin base coating, which had been exposed to high pressure and high temperature to study coating degradation in hostile environments. Mid-infrared OCT was employed for high-resolution (~15/8.5 µm lateral/axial) subsurface inspection of highly scattering marine coatings, demonstrating monitoring of wet film thickness and particle dispersion during curing of a 210 µm layer of antifouling coating, and detection of substrate corrosion through 369 µm of high-gloss alkyd enamel. Combining high-resolution and fast, non-invasive scanning, OCT is therefore considered a promising tool for studying coating performance and for industrial inspection.
