Abstract Background There is currently a chronic shortage of surgeons, particularly cardiac surgeons, in Japan and worldwide. Additionally, the number of female medical students has been increasing worldwide; half of our university’s medical students are females. We assessed the attitudes of medical students regarding preferred lifestyles and specialties, aiming to identify strategies for increasing the number of surgeons in Japan. Methods We conducted a questionnaire survey among second- and fifth-year medical students at Aichi Medical University, to assess their career priorities and ideal lifestyles when choosing specialties. In total, 71 second-year (male:female, 36:35) and 55 fifth-year (male:female, 27:28) students were surveyed. Differences were compared between school year and sex. Results Few students considered becoming general surgeons (19%) or cardiac surgeons (14%). Most students were more interested in how interesting (92%) and rewarding a particular field (88%) would be, rather than in dedication to work (7%) or career advancement (6%), regardless of school year or sex. Females were particularly concerned about a heavy workload (79% vs 68%) and were less likely to prefer surgery (9% vs 27%) compared with males. The importance of acquiring useful skills (77% vs 95%) and wanting to train in the neighboring Tokai area tended to increase (21% vs 60%) with increasing grade. Conclusions Most students had decided their ideal career path in the lower grades and desired controlled lifestyle. To increase the number of surgeons, it is necessary to improve surgeons’ lifestyles, reduce their workloads, develop medical students’ interest in surgery, and ensure development of useful skills.

In addition to entertainment, games have been recognized as enhancers of cognition and associated with increased motivation in the school learning context. The possibility of immersion and active player participation is considered a distinguished aspects of game design. Therefore, this study proposed the application of Brain School’s digital games using tablets during a school year, with weekly interventions of 50 minutes in a class of the second year of elementary school. Twenty-five students were analyzed with an average of eight years old. At the end of the interventions, the evaluation was carried out through individual interviews. The results revealed that most of children felt motivated to participate in the games activities. However, there was no association between level of motivation and cognitive skills investigated (attention and problem solving), nor between preferred games and cognitive skills trained. However, qualitative data showed that children liked using games and acknowledged that the activity contributed with the exercise of their abilities. In general, this research contributed to reinforcing the importance of the diversification of methodological strategies which include the use of digital games in education.

Problem-solving strategies are important parts of our middle school curriculum. Teaching strategies is an excellent way to help students attack mathematical, as well as other, problems. Such strategies include guessing and checking, simplifying the problem, building a model, developing a systematic list or a chart, working backward, drawing a picture, and looking for a pattern. Our students spend an entire school year in the eighth grade to learn to use these problem- solving strategies to solve problems that would otherwise require sophisticated mathematical tools if they could be solved at all by mathematical methods. This experience promotes the development of intuition and number sense in young students.

The aim of the current study was to replicate the subjective outcome evaluation based on program implementers in the first year (2006/07 school year) of the Full Implementation Phase (Secondary 1 level) of the Project P.A.T.H.S. (Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social Programmes). After the completion of the Tier 1 program in the 2007/08 school year, 1324 implementers from 213 schools completed a Subjective Outcome Evaluation Form for instructors in order to assess their views of the program, themselves, and the perceived effectiveness of the program. Reliability test indicated the questionnaire was internally consistent. The results showed that, similar to the first year of implementation, high proportions of the respondents had positive perceptions of the program and their own performance. Regarding the perceived effectiveness of the program, roughly 90% of the respondents thought the program was helpful. A statistically significant increase in positive responses was also found in some items of perceived effectiveness in the second year of implementation. Possible factors contributing to such changes, including accumulation of experience and skill enhancement of the implementers, as well as stronger support from the schools, are discussed.

This paper examines the religious content of three Moroccan second year Baccalaureate ELT textbooks. It studies the representation of religion as a cultural perspective in these textbooks to investigate whether they raise Moroccan learners’ awareness of other religions. It is built on the premise that the spread of religious intolerance is fueled by being insufficiently or inappropriately informed about local and foreign religions. It therefore draws the attention of ELT practitioners to recognizing the role ELT textbooks could play in reducing illiteracy about religions and fostering positive attitudes towards other religions. The study evolved within the theoretical framework of the Standards-Based Approach. It adopted a concurrent triangulation design and used mixed content analysis to analyze the data. The findings revealed that the examined textbooks do not sensitize learners about respect for diversity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence among different religions. Ultimately, some ways in which religious antagonism could be minimized are suggested.

Kegiatan Program Kemitraan Masyarakat (PKM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi Bahasa Inggris siswi-siswi Tata Busana SMK Muhammadiyah Bangunjiwo dengan memberikan pelatihan TOEIC (Test of English as an International Communication). Kata kunci: TOEIC; kompetensi Bahasa Inggris; SMKAbstract This Community Partnership Service activity aimed to improve the competence of English students at SMK (Vocational High School) Muhammadiyah Bangunjiwo by conducting TOEIC (Test of English and International Communication) training. TOEIC is a standard of English language proficiency measurement for SMK graduates who have been set by the government through the Ministry of Education and Culture. As a new department opened in the 2017/2018 school year, the Department of Clothing of SMK Muhammadiyah Bangunjiwo has never held a TOEIC training nor TOEIC test to improve and measure the English language skills of its students. In this program, the training was held for 17 meetings, of which 2 meetings were used for the TOEIC pre-and post-test for the participants. A total of 13 participants were listed as participants in this training. Pre-test and post-test were carried out to measure participants' scores before and after training. The results showed that out of 13 training participants, 3 participants did not participate in the training nor did they participate in the pre and post-test (inactive), 4 participants only followed the post-test, 3 participants got an increased score, 2 participants got a decreased score, and 1 participant got a constant score. Overall, it can be concluded that even though the results are not significant, there are positive attitudes and things shown by the participants. The indicator is the increasing number of post-test participants (10 people) compared to the pre-test (6 people) so that it can be said that the participants' motivation rises, and the number of participants who got an increased score (3 people) is more than the participants who got a decreased score (2 people,) so that it can be said that this training is quite effective in increasing the English competence of the participants. Keywords: TOEIC; English competence; vocational school

In this paper, I analyze the data obtained from the research conducted by the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš, Serbia during the academic year 2018/2019. The research collected data about the change of the attitude of students of philosophy regarding various theoretical statements, which students rated before and after attending courses in philosophy. By completing a specially prepared questionnaire before the first and after the second semester, students of the second year of philosophy evaluated, among other things, ten aesthetic statements. Analyzing the information collected, I look at how the teaching of the courses “History of Aesthetics 1” and “History of Aesthetics 2” (which these students attended during this school year) influenced the change that occurred in their attitude toward these statements. In addition to examining the results regarding the change of the attitude of students after the second semester, the paper also explores other data obtained in the research, which point to certain problems in the way a historical overview of aesthetic conceptions in these courses is approached.
