A 7-year-old castrated male Labrador retriever was referred for evaluation of progressive hind limb paresis of 4 weeks’ duration. On computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging examination, masses were found in several regions including the lung, right kidney, and peritoneum. Additionally, an extradural mass at the region of T13–L1 was identified, which is assumed to related to the chief complaint, progressive hind limb paresis. With the consent of the owner, a dorsal laminectomy was performed to remove the mass and surrounding tissues for the palliation of the hind limb paresis. Hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemical examination revealed the mass to be consistent with an undifferentiated (high-grade) pleomorphic sarcoma. The patient presented with recurrence of the hind limb paresis, respiratory discomfort, and urinary incontinence. The owner declined treatment and the dog was euthanized. Systemic metastasis was confirmed on postmortem microscopic examination. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report describing multiple undifferentiated high-grade pleomorphic sarcoma with extradural involvement developing into the vertebral canal through the intervertebral space, resulting in spinal damage, in a dog.

Intramural duodenal hematoma (IDH) in children is a rare complication after esophagogastroduodenoscopy. It is commonly described in patients with additional disorders or risk factors, such as coagulopathy. We present a case of a previously healthy 6-year-old boy with a large obstructing intramural duodenal hematoma and concomitant pancreatitis after an elective esophagogastroduodenoscopy. The patient presented with typical symptoms of an IDH, such as abdominal pain and distension, nausea and vomiting. IDH was diagnosed using ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging examination. Conservative management with gastric decompression using a nasogastric feeding tube, bowel rest, total parenteral nutrition and analgesia was performed. After three weeks, the patient was discharged from the hospital without any complaints. Interventional management of IDH in pediatric patients with a lack of response to conservative therapy or complicating IDH should be discussed in an interdisciplinary team.

Strabismus occurs in about 2% of children and may result in amblyopia or lazy eyes and loss of depth perception. However, whether/how long-term strabismus shapes the brain structure and functions in children with concomitant strabismus (CS) is still unclear. In this study, a total of 26 patients with CS and 28 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging examination. The cortical thickness and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) were calculated to assess the structural and functional plasticity in children with CS. Compared with HCs group, patients with CS showed increased cortical thickness in the precentral gyrus and angular gyrus while decreased cortical thickness in the left intraparietal sulcus, parieto-occipital sulcus, superior and middle temporal gyrus, right ventral premotor cortex, anterior insula, orbitofrontal cortex, and paracentral lobule. Meanwhile, CS patients exhibited increased ALFF in the prefrontal cortex and superior temporal gyrus, and decreased ALFF in the caudate and hippocampus. These results show that children with CS have abnormal structure and function in brain regions subserving eye movement, controls, and high-order cognitive functions. Our findings revealed the structural and functional abnormalities induced by CS and may provide new insight into the underlying neural mechanisms for CS.

ackground: Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder and there is progressive cognitive impairment, functional deficits and behavioral changes. This neurodegenerative disease process is classically characterized by two pathological features: amyloid- β plaque deposition and neurofibrillary tangle of tau hyperphosphorylation. The most established genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer Disease is the APOE gene allele 4. We will report a case of late-onset Alzheimer's Dementia with genotype E3/E4. Case: A 70-years-old woman patient, complained by her family that she often forgets. The Mini Mental State Examination showed disturbances in orientation, attention, calculation and recall. Non-contrast Brain Magnetic resonance imaging examination revealed decrease in hippocampal volume. Patient also performed a molecular examination of the Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype and the genotype E3/E4 was detected Conclusion: The APOE E4 gene has a major role in the occurrence of Late-Onset Alzheimer's Dementia. A 31-years-old patient, pregnant at 32 weeks of gestation presented to our triage unit with complaint of gradually progressive persistent headache that started 1 day earlier and was unresponsive to all analgesics. Her history was insignificant for any major medical or surgical events and the pregnancy course was smooth as well. Her lab results and obstetric ultrasound were reassuring. During magnetic resonance imaging examination, the patient suddenly deteriorated after giving her an inhalational anaesthesia for sedation. She became unconscious. She was intubated, mechanically ventilated, and put-on cardiovascular support. Brain imaging then revealed Brain Stem (BS) herniation and diffuse brain oedema. She was announced dead with intrauterine foetal death. A late diagnosis of cerebral venous thrombosis was established. This caused BS herniation through increased intracranial pressure, which was iatrogenically augmented by administering inhalation anaesthesia. Abstract Tourette syndrome (TS) and obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) are two neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by repetitive behaviors. Our recent study in drug-naive children with TS and OCD provided evidence of cerebellar involvement in both disorders. In addition, cerebellar functional connectivity (FC) was similar in TS patients without comorbidities (TSpure) and TS patients with OCD comorbidity (TS + OCD), but differed in pure OCD patients. To investigate in detail the cerebellar involvement in the pathophysiology of TS and OCD, we explored cerebellar structural and functional abnormalities in drug-naive children with TSpure, TS + OCD, and OCD and assessed possible correlations with severity scores. We examined 53 drug-naive children, classified as TSpure (n = 16), TS + OCD (n = 14), OCD (n = 11), or controls (n = 12). All subjects underwent a multimodal 3T magnetic resonance imaging examination. Cerebellar lobular volumes and quantitative diffusion tensor imaging parameters of cerebellar peduncles were used as measures of structural integrity. The dentate nucleus was selected as a region of interest to examine cerebello-cerebral functional connectivity alterations. Structural analysis revealed that both TSpure and TS + OCD patients had higher fractional anisotropy in cerebellar peduncles than controls. Conversely, OCD patients were characterized by lower fractional anisotropy than both controls and TSpure and TS + OCD patients. Lastly, cerebellar functional connectivity analysis revealed significant alterations in the cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuit in TSpure, TS + OCD, and OCD patients. Early cerebellar structural and functional changes in drug-naive pediatric TSpure, TS + OCD, and OCD patients support a primary role of the cerebellum in the pathophysiology of these disorders.

The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of a newly developed anticancer drug-releasing radiofrequency ablation (RFA) system in a porcine liver model. A 15-gauge drug-releasing cooled wet electrode (DRCWE) was newly developed to improve the RFA efficacy for creating a large ablation as well as for simultaneously delivering an anticancer drug to the tumor margin. Nine ablations in three pigs were performed by the DRCWE. The sectioned liver specimens were evaluated by measuring the ablation zone by a positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging examination to investigate whether 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose was exactly diffused. Volumes of the ablation zones released drug injection volumes, circularity, retention rate defined as the ratio between an estimated and injection dose, and the standard uptake value were assessed. The drug-releasing RFA was technically successful without procedural-related complications. During the procedure, the color changes of the ablated zones of the liver were observed in all specimens. The mean drug injection volume was higher than the ablated volumes (17.21 ± 2.85 vs. 15.22 ± 2.30 cm3) and the circularity was 0.72 ± 0.08. Moreover, the retention rate was 72.89% ± 4.22% and the mean standard uptake value was 0.44 ± 0.05. The drug-releasing RFA system was feasible not only for local ablation but also for the delivery of anticancer drugs. The results of this study indicate that this novel strategy of localized RFA with a drug delivery system could be a promising option for the prevention of local recurrence rates.

Meningiomas located in the foramen magnum area are uncommon. We report the case of a patient with a mass lesion compressing the medulla, who was admitted to the Neurology Department for cervical pain and tetraparesis. On the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) examination, specific features for a meningioma were described, confirmed later by the histopathological examination. We present a rare case of a schwannoma which is localized on the posterior pharyngeal wall. It caused severe difficulty in swallowing and breathing in a 3-year-old child. Schwannomas of the posterior pharyngeal wall have been rarely reported in children. To our knowledge, only 7 cases of posterior pharyngeal wall schwannoma have been previously reported in the literature, but none of them is associated with a child. The tumor was removed with plasma radiofrequency excision via a transoral route. Computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging examination showed no recurrence of the tumor up to 2 years. To our knowledge, for the first time, a case of posterior pharyngeal wall schwannoma has been reported in a 3-year-old child, and the schwannoma was removed via plasma radiofrequency transoral excision. This case study illustrates that schwannoma may occur in children, and it is safe to treat this disease through plasma radiofrequency transoral excision route.

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer worldwide, but its incidence varies greatly in different countries. Regardless of incidence or mortality, the burden of cervical cancer in China accounts for approximately 18% of the global burden. The Chinese Cervical Cancer Clinical Study is a hospital-based multicenter open cohort. The major aims of this study include (i) to explore the associations of therapeutic strategies with complications as well as mid- and long-term clinical outcomes; (ii) to widely assess the factors which may have an influence on the prognosis of cervical cancer and then guide the treatment options, and to estimate prognosis using a prediction model for precise post-treatment care and follow-up; (iii) to develop a knowledge base of cervical clinical auxiliary diagnosis and prognosis prediction using artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches; and (iv) to roughly map the burden of cervical cancer in different districts and monitoring the trend in incidence of cervical cancer to potentially inform prevention and control strategies. Patients eligible for inclusion were those diagnosed with cervical cancer, whether during an outpatient visit or hospital admission, at 47 different types of medical institutions in 19 cities of 11 provinces across mainland China between 2004 and 2018. In a total, 63 926 patients with cervical cancer were enrolled in the cohort. Since the project inception, a large number of standardized variables have been collected, including epidemiological characteristics, cervical cancer-related symptoms, physical examination results, laboratory testing results, imaging reports, tumor biomarkers, tumor staging, tumor characteristics, comorbidities, co-infections, treatment and short-term complications. Follow-up was performed at least once every 6 months within the first 5 years after receiving treatment and then annually thereafter. At present, we are developing a cervical cancer imaging database containing Dicom files with data of computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging examination. Additionally, we are also collecting original pathological specimens of patients with cervical cancer. Potential collaborators are welcomed to contact the corresponding authors, and anyone can submit at least one specific study proposal describing the background, objectives and methods of the study.
