The article is devoted to the empirical study of one of the dimensions of the problem of the relationship between intelligence and emotional evaluation of personality. Theaimof this article is to investigate the age and gender characteristics of verbal, mathematical, spatial intelligence in adolescence and youths, as well as to establish a correlation with the characteristics of emotional evaluation of commercials by high school and university students of different genders. The study focused on determining the age and gender characteristics of intelligence indices of high school students aged 15–17 (N = 47) and university students aged 19–21 (N = 49); and determining the relationship between the verbal, mathematical, and spatial intelligence of the two samples’ respondents (adolescents and young people, boys and girls), and their emotional evaluation of the commercials. Methods. In order to solve research questions, two approaches are used: R. Amthauer’s “Test of the Structure of Intelligence” and C. Osgood’s semantic differential method. Results. In contrast to high school students, universitystudents have a higherlevel of development of verbal and mathematical intelligence. A higher level of development of verbal intelligence in girls and a higher level of development of spatial intelligence in boys were stated. Significant correlations between the emotional evaluation of commercials and gender and age characteristics of intellectual abilities have been identified. The independent variable “gender” has a higher value than the independent variable “age”, according to the mathematical and spatial intelligence of boys and girls in their advertising evaluation. Music commercials with actors, a storyline, and elements of drama, as well as videos with computer special effects, were found to be the most entertaining to the respondents. Keywords: cognitive abilities, verbal intelligence, mathematical intelligence, spatial intelligence, advertising, semantic differential.

The present study combines literary theory and cognitive psychology to empirically explore some cognitive and emotional facets of poetry reading, exemplified by the reading of three Shakespeare sonnets. Specifically, predictions generated combining quantitative textual analysis according to the Neurocognitive Poetics model with qualitative textual analysis based on the Foregrounding assessment Matrix of sonnets no. 27, 60 and 66 are empirically tested by analyzing 45 subjects’ ratings of the three sonnets. Reflecting the differences in foregrounding potential of the three sonnets found in the textual analysis, we expected to find different reader responses, accordingly. Our dependent variables are well-established categories of emotional evaluation (e.g. valence and arousal) and cognitive, affective and aesthetic aspects of readers’ responses (e.g. liking and understanding) as well as less common ones (e.g. wonder, delight and mental images). The statistical analyses suggest that the type of foregrounding is more important than the number of foregrounded elements. This finding motivated further qualitative exploration of reader responses to open questions regarding mental images and perceived feelings. Comparing the free recall data about the feelings perceived in the sonnets with the ratings data about Valence and Arousal indicated that only the former one reflects a clear distinction between all three sonnets, whereas the readers’ overall evaluations did not sustain this variety of feelings. Multi-method, interdisciplinary research of this kind contributes to improving our understanding of the potentially unique mechanisms involved in poetry reception, and to forming more precise hypotheses for future experimental studies using, for example, eye tracking.

The role of evaluative semantics in expressing tenderness in modern Russian This article is devoted to the study of the Russian language’s valuational units expressing affectionate relations, as well as their lexicographic description. The above-mentioned group of words has not received a proper description in the academic literature in comparison with the nominative-valuative vocabulary with diminutive and inflectional suffixes. Special attention is paid to thematic affiliation as a factor determining the degree of emotional evaluation. Lexical-thematic groups are distinguished – precious, divinity, light, sweetness – which define the expression of tenderness by means of metaphorical names. The traditional ways of expressing tenderness towards children, women and loved ones are highlighted. Cases of the revision, transposition and sensibilization of evaluation semantics were considered. The conclusions of this article can be used in the lexicographic description of Russian vocabulary and in the practice of teaching Russian as a foreign language. Keywords: semantics, valuative meaning, thematic relevance, vocabulary, Russian language

The issue of lexical diminutive designations of person in English is discussed in the article. The specificity of diminutives as a type of derived word is determined, the structure of lexical diminutives is analyzed, types of affixes serving to their formation are established. Emotional-evaluation character of hypocoristic suffixes and semantic features of the lexemes under study are described.

Authors such as Tyler Schnoebelen (on page 12 of his study Emotions are Relational: Positioning and the Use of Affective Linguistic Resources), suggest that in some languages (cf. Navajo), certain dependent clauses are frequently used independently to “mark emotional evaluation and background information”. Evans, in his work on insubordination and its uses, makes use of the term insubordination to refer to this phenomenon. Our study focuses on a particular insubordinate construction introduced by the sequence ni que in Spanish, as in the example [¡Una carta cada día!] Ni que yo fuese Umbral. (CORPES Corpus), used as an independent clause with a sociopragmatic meaning, which is different from that of its subordinate counterpart (cf. No escribiría una carta cada día ni que yo fuese Umbral). Our research questions ask about the potential for ni que to be used as a discourse marker fulfilling an expressive function when it introduces this type of construction, and the derived hypothesis is then oriented to test whether Schnoebelen’s observation about insubordinate constructions also applies to this Spanish construction. In order to test this hypothesis, we performed a functional discourse analysis of more than 2000 concordances (and their extended contexts) in Mark Davies’ Corpus del Español and the Real Academia CORPES XXI. Our findings show that the insubordinate construction differs in function and meaning from its subordinate counterpart, the former fulfilling an emotive function, often combined with other discourse–pragmatic functions, such as evaluation or the organization of discourse.

This research work responds to the need to find a new way to evaluate the design alternatives generated in the concept development phase under the focus of the emotions that the future product may arouse in the users. In order to achieve the proposed objectives and to give an answer to the problems found in the field of methods for the evaluation and selection of alternatives, the corresponding methodological approach was carried out, describing a methodology of intervention research where the stages of analysis, synthesis, praxis, and conclusions must be considered. In the analysis stage, the theoretical framework was built, describing the issues that underlie the research concerning the process of design and product development, the theoretical foundations of emotional design, and the state of the question, describing the methods of evaluation and selection of existing alternatives most used in the design and development of products. Once the analysis was concluded in the synthesis stage the proposal of a solution to the problem was raised through the design of a new method taking, as a model of the process of design and development of products the one proposed by Ulrich and Eppinger and the taxonomies of the emotions of Desmet and Fokkinga as a base for the emotional evaluation. For the practical stage, a case study was designed with the collaboration of the company "Química Son's S.A de C.V." where the method was applied using the application software ValorEmon for the evaluation of design alternatives and subsequent decision-making. Finally, the conclusions of the research were made in response to the objectives and hypothetical approach of the same.

Initial evaluation structures (IESs) currently proposed as the earliest detectors of affective stimuli (e.g., amygdala, orbitofrontal cortex, or insula) are high-order structures (a) whose response latency cannot account for the first visual cortex emotion-related response (~80 ms), and (b) lack the necessary infrastructure to locally analyze the visual features that define emotional stimuli. Several thalamic structures accomplish both criteria. The lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), a first-order thalamic nucleus that actively processes visual information, with the complement of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) are proposed as core IESs. This LGN–TRN tandem could be supported by the pulvinar, a second-order thalamic structure, and by other extrathalamic nuclei. The visual thalamus, scarcely explored in affective neurosciences, seems crucial in early emotional evaluation.
